My favorite movie of 2023 so far. I’m slightly obsessed. Her voice is otherworldly, her and Jonah’s chemistry was off the charts. In spite of all the racial hate she got, she never responded, she let the work speak for itself. Her new single “Angel” is in response to the haters and it says all she needed to say.
Watching this in theatre is like no other experience, I balled my eyes out at least three times. I truly feel bad for the people that don't understand this, it just means you have no heart. I had your reaction too, had to pause & really just soak everything in. Halle's voice is so enchanting & magical. That's why God lifted her up into this position, to show the haters how empty they really are. Remember to persevere & never give up hope when times get rough.
The idea of Ursula being King Triton's sister is actually a deleted concept from the original animated film. It was first recycled for the Broadway stage adaptation.
Yeah, I knew about that concept from years ago and I'm glad they decided to keep that in this remake, it makes for a good story especially with mythological characters.
They casted this movie perfectly!!! Jonah, played such a great Eric to Halle’s Ariel. You could really see their chemistry and in my opinion it carried the movie, once it got introduced.

The new songs are not from the theatre productions. Eric does have a couple songs in the Broadway musical, but that's not one of them. Look up "her voice" and "one step closer." There's also "of only" sung by Ariel, Eric, Sebastian, and Triton. Ursula also has a song called "I want the good times back" which was about her past. Then Ariel has a song called "Beyond my wildest dreams" that's her singing in her head about her first experience as a human...similar to the new movie.
As a massive theater person who’s done the Little Mermaid onstage twice, I can say there is different music here than in the stage version. While I love Lin Manuel Miranda’s work (he helped with these new songs), I wish they used some of the songs from the stage version bc I love them 😍
The first time I did it I was in 3rd grade, and the high school was doing it, and had local kids be in the guppy chorus during Under the Sea. The second time, I was in the ensemble (sea creature) and I got to push the boat during Kiss the Girl. Both times I’ve done the show I have loved doing it, and it helped me want to be a theater kid 🎟️ I’m actually closing a show tomorrow (8/6) and I’m sad it’s over. We are finishing Newsies, which if you haven’t heard of it, is based off of the real life Newsboys Strike of 1899, which was from July 18th to August 2nd, which happened to be similar to our run. There’s the original movie by Disney, and then the Broadway recording, both on Disney+ in case you are interested 😉

This movie I think is the best live action adaptation so far…all they did was fix plot holes and enhance themes…and giving actual depth to Eric and Ariel’s relationship?? Genius. It was definitely satisfying. Only BUT I have is they took away the ensamble from kiss the girl and under the sea…kinda made it less happy somehow…I miss the participation from all the sea creatures
Amazing reaction!!! This has to be one of my favorite LAR films!!! I really loved how they added more depth to both Ariel and Eric and made them incredibly parallel. I was so happy they kept the concept of Ursula and Triton being siblings; it was deleted from the original but adapted for the stage version which also gave us the backstory of the origin Ursula’s evil nature. Another favorite moment of mine was Vanessa’s trick; Halle’s voice, Melissa’s cackle, and Jessica’s acting was what that moment top tier. 🧜🏾♀️🦀🐠🐦🤴🏻🗣️🎶 🐚🔱🩵💙💜🖤💛

I liked that they gave more depth to the characters King Triton and Prince Eric. In Eric's song Uncharted Waters, when he speaks about Ariel you can hear her vocals in the background. She used her siren song to save Eric.
Yeah, I think Halle Bailey was the perfect aerial. I don't understand all the backlash, but then again, I do American is racist. Because truly, she killed this role. She was beautiful. I purchased it on itunes!! The love Story is so much better in this
Composer, Alan Menken said Ariel is the lead and she had only one song in the animated movie, crazy. He also said in the animated version she see Eric and thinks he's gorgeous and falls in love; that's not gonna work in live action so Ariel and Eric are both collectors and want to explore, the shipwreck happens and she saves him do that's how they connect.
You're not the only one who noticed and was bothered by that. Others wanted to see her transformation into her sparkling dress, and Ariel's other iconic dresses.

Honestly, I think the main issue with this movie is its timing. I really did love the animation, for its perfect timing, comic relief, in particular from Sebastian's side. This was mostly lacking for me in this one. Combined with the darker setting altogether its just not for kids anymore and the older generation might miss the lightness in it to feel the nostalgia. I think most actors do a fine job, I didn't care about Arielle's skin color, she did a great job and her voice is perfect, Melissa fitted into her role fine, but Javier Bardem just looks so displaced. Also, the CGI isn't as great. Not sure what it is, maybe the 3D, but its not really adding up for me. And the mermaid costumes looked cheap over water.

Grimsby is not bad, he is like the human counterpart of Sebastian. Ariel has King Triton and Sebastian, Eric has Queen Selena and Grimsby.
