  • Madame Web reviews recently came out for the Sony Marvel movie, much to Hollywood's dismay. Disney changed the marvel MCU to center characters like She-hulk and focus on ramakes like Snow White with Rachel Zeger. But do audiences want this? Madame Web proved that the disasters keep getting worse, is it the end of the girlboss? Has Disney realised they need to change? Is Madame Web worth watching?

Madame Web Reviews left a lot to be desired, but were far from the only time a movie has failed in recent time for the reason of a Hollywood girlboss. This has caused Disney to "retool" in horror as they blame the bigoted fans for not liking the ideas that have been force fed to them. But this goes deeper than just which actor plays a role. It's down to the values and messaging of entertainment, and are we going to use masculine morality, or something else? And while Disney may WANT to retool, may TRY to change direction. But can they do that with the same staff hired that caused the problems in the first place? Do they even KNOW what the audience wants, even begrudgingly? Or are Disney's hiring practices so hard baked into the company that there is no turning back anymore? Let me know your thoughts down below and as always, thanks for watching :)

The problem isn't "the girl/woman who is the key to everything" aspect, as many series have done it and have been successful (take example of Japanese Anime like the ongoing "Apothecary Diaries" or "Frieren" both focusing on female main characters and both being highly popular).
The problem is the forced idea that men are the issues of all problems while woman are all great and the solution to all problems. That it's wrong for a woman to rely on a man and should either rely on themselves or other women only, and like you said "realizes she is awesome" and she is complete and perfect from start (and it's Men who are making them imperfect and dragging them down).
The biggest issue is that, in order to put Women on the high pedestal, what they are doing is bringing down the Men, by various means, rather than co-working.

Honestly! It amazes me how Hollywood can't write good female characters anymore. not just "good", in terms of with flaws and arcs and a personality, but "good", in terms of being morally good, thinking about something other than themselves, and developing actually strong, supporting relationships with other people (especially men.
People forget that back in the days of damsels in distress, one key attribute of the better written damsels, such as some of the classic doctor who assistance or princess Leia; not to mention original Snow white, is that they actually had to be decent people who wee, along with the hero would dam well want! @@spark300c I see what you mean, but the point I was making wasn't that we need more average, none-powered women in films (sword fighting Wendy in the stupid Peter pan remake was supposed to be average), but rather in the past when women played damsel type characters, because they were! the damsel character, IE the one whom the hero had the connection to and who would risk danger to save, they had to be likable.
Princess Leia stands up to Darth Vader's torture, shows deep concern for her rebels when she asks Obiwan for help in the message, mourns her planet and her father and attempts to deflect the empire, even before Luke Skywalker busts in, we already get that she's a hugely selfless person.
In the classic Doctor who story Robot, Sarah Jane shows compassion to the eponymous giant robot, so that when it goes berserk, not only does it spare her, but she's able to distract it.
In New who, Rose shows kindness to many aliens she meets, from the ood to the dalek!
The same goes for male characters too of course, one of the first things we see Aladdin do in the original disney film is hand off some of the bread he's just risked his life for, to some young orphans, however it's with female characters that we're really seeing the problem here!
Not just in lack of damsels, albeit it'd be good to have a heroic man save a woman again, (both women and men enjoy seeing that), but in lack of "good", female characters, good in terms of well written, but good in terms of not being rude, callous, or down right evil!
You can have a character be both a powerful warrior, and feminine and compassionate, Katara in the original last Airbender, Major Kira in Ds9 or buffy the vampire slayer are great examples, but it's the likability and selflessness that makes the audience identify with the characters, and that's something so many modern female characters have just plane lost!

As I said, whether it's Ripley, buffy the vampire slayer, Doctor who's companions like Sarah Jane, Ace or Jo grant, or heck original 1937 Snow white for that matter, the key difference in female characters of old, whether they were damsels being rescued or not, was that they tend to be likable, good hearted people who care about others and aren't just obsessed with power!

All of Professor Hulk and his cameo in She-Hulk. It doesn't feel like Bruce Banner and they killed the Hulk, it was just Mark by the end and it fucking sucked.

What has surprised me is how many videos I have seen of late about people seeking a return to physical media like DVD and Blu-ray. Just a few months ago, I, too, began stockpiling DVDs of my favorite titles partly for fear that censorship would eliminate some of my favorites (e.g., Gone with the Wind, Gettysburg) and partly to save money by cancelling streaming services. I have a library with thousands of books, DVDs, and CDs plus games like chess, go, backgammon, scrabble, etc. I have enough entertainment to occupy me easily for the next 30 years, and I am definitely not alone in my sentiments. I could go to other things and watch rom-coms and musicals and other things if and when I felt like it, but I liked Superhero movies how they were. They will ALWAYS inject feminism into everything they make. They cant help themselves. They cant think outside of that box because they _are_ the box. The best they can do is make it a little more subtle than it is in other current day shows, but thats not good enough for me. I dont want just a little bit of shit on my steak. I want a steak without any shit on it.
The choice is to watch older stuff, indie stuff or nothing at all. Even with the older and indie stuff, you still have to sift through a mountain of feminism-riddled garbage before you find something decent. I barely even watch movies and shows anymore.

My thoughts are that if they kept Sydney Sweeney in the outfit for most of the movie and didn’t put her in a freaking chest binder, it would’ve been better.
Having old, madam, web, send her through a portal in time, because that shit cheetahs in the cartoon and have Sydney Sweeney running around, trying to make sure that Peter Parker gets born.
And in order to do this, she has to awake, madden, webs, powers, couple of years early or something.

Disney deserves to go under with blatant delusion like this from board members. This is the same thing as marketing romcoms to guys as some bro movie love story and then getting mad when neither gender (😉) goes and sees it.

I never had issues with girl bosses but lately thats almost 80% the focus of marvel. When was the last show with a NEW male hero? Moon Knight yeah?

If today's Hollywood films displayed a fraction of the creativity, if they were produced and acted with a fraction of the talent, of classic films, things might be different. As it is, Hollywood is finally suffering the affects of its current creativity and talent deficit.

The whole idea that there aren't any strong female leads in movies is 'tarded. There have been strong female leads in basically every genre of movies since Gone with the Wind. Today it's really not about girl bosses. It's all about the ESG and DEI messages being pushed by BlackRock on all of the companies that they have loaned money to and the ripple effects of that.

Madame Web is not a Disney movie. It's a Sony movie that owns the Spider-Man portion of the Marvel catalog, and it was a ham handed attempt to make a movie to keep the IP from reverting back to Disney.

I don't know how investors continue to support Disney's executives after they've lost billions of dollars.

To them it's worth it if they get a brainwashed and braindead new generation to profit of out of it.

I saw Peter Criss' solo band KRISS live in my town. They didn't like how mellow the crowd was so the singer was like "All right everybody, this is a new song we just wrote, I hope you all like it" and then they started playing randomly as loud as they could and they sang 'Springfield sucks! Springfield sucks!' over and over again for several minutes. I didn't know at the time how avant garde he really was.

This situation is not unique to Disney. Major media companies in all kinds of industries, from journalism to game development, hire based on DEI. It's natural that people who are hired in this way will double down on whatever got them the job. The news outlets, AI, Hollywood, gamedev, it's the same everywhere, the workers don't care about profits or merit, they only care about getting "the message" out, even if it kills their industry. If it's them losing their jobs or the industry being killed, of course they choose the latter.
