'We aren't going anywhere': Trail riders hold onto community as Austin changes rapidly

- For generations, horse riders have called East Austin’s historically Black and brown neighborhoods home. As much of the cultural character of this part of town is pushed out by gentrification, the riders hold onto their community and traditions. Each one tells a different story of why they ride and what statement they hope to make. “When we ride these horses around in the city, it’s definitely making a statement that people of color are still here and we aren’t going anywhere,” said Kamesha Brooks.
Horses really are healers. As a white person, I never knew this side of black heritage existed. Yes, definitely keep up this tradition! Get those kids onto a horse immediately. And you've certainly chosen the right breed...the Tennessee Walking horse/racking horse/single footer and even off track Standardbreds. There is nothing like a locked-in gaited horse. Just get on and FLY! Who can possibly be depressed when you are on the back of an amazing animal that will happily and smoothly carry you away from all your worries. Great horses, great family, friends, food and music. Now THAT is what builds a great community. Many many blessings to all!
😘
I totally agree, my horse kept me going after my husband died. I was severely depressed but she had to be fed/ watered 2,x a day. In the past when I had problems, I always rode. Always felt happy by the end of my ride.
What a great video. I love that you all have a heart for the younger generation and use your horses to make that connection. Horses are healing creatures.
This is a great video, really enjoyed the riders expressing how they feel and what's important. Talking about so many positive things. Friends, teaching children, love of their horse, having a great time. And like the young lady rider said, making people more aware of history of past and present black riders. I love all the videos of trail rides. Keep going.
That is exactly how I started riding as a little girl. Being placed on top of a horse and walked around. Let me tell you all.....I made a career out it. I rode racehorses professionally for 15 years.
Keep riding!!!🐎
Nothing is better than a good horse, riding is great therapy.
This was well documented! Also, it was awesome to see them do a complete 180° from the lives they previously lived. They found their peace !
Good job... I ride my stang out here in Alice Texas. as a Filipino American ranching it's nice riding in the morning around the ranch.... I grew up in Oakland CA so I know how it feel being a city boy but I always had horse in the Philippines since I was 3 yrs old..
So brodahz and sistahz good job leading the turn around from drugs to riding.
✌✌
This was a great piece. All of the video used here was so beautiful to see.
THANK YOU FOR THIS! FINALLY TRUTH...IT IS WHAT IT IS! and the most BEAUTIFUL thing is yall dont abuse your gorgeous Tennessee Walking Horses to get them to strut their stuff! Y'ALL KICKIN!
Give us Freedom. Give us choices. Give us love of life.
You and your horses are beautiful 💕🪶 God bless you all, I got so many tears of gratitude, I'm humbled by your example and love. One day soon WERE GONNA RIDE THIS TURTLE 🐢 HOME BROTHERS AND SISTERS, TWO LEGGED AND FOUR🙏🐢🐎
Im home grown an i been seeing this all my life in austin..im glad it got too this point were the kids are involved..this is nice.
Love the video 👍 More power to you brothers and sisters 🙏
Keep Austin Black man they trying to take y'all out.
4 sho!!
I enjoyed this video so much. I think a longer one is in order. Thank you from Kennewick, WA!
Wave 👋 to my horse people from ky keep up the love for the hobby
This is so wonderful to see. All inner cities should have stables. All inner city kids should have contact with horses. Prisoners should be in equine programs. Horses can change lives and stop crime and teach responsibility and trust.
LOL
There are so many of my rasta friends who would unnderstand me better if they saw this video ,🤣🐎 i have shared already, my Mom told me ,,when i was little and discovered westerns, that cowboys were called that because after the abolishtion of slavery, most cowBOYS were black and they still called them boy,,to deny them as equalty with white men,,,,but now they are on tv they must be white, so guys my heart is happy to see you enjoying Your culture in your country ,,blessings , i will follow you,,

Loved this piece.
The horse has truly been a gift to all societies and all people. I really hope I can afford a horse again, and live like I grew up.
I feel the same way when i get on the horse it's just me and my horse all my problems go away. Keep going guys don't let none get in your guys way.
My uncle looks so happy on his horse on may ,7th ,2022 his smile has gotten bigger my uncle is the man in the green shirt in the beginning 🙂❤️
That was a Powerful Statement..... Strong video. Thanks for sharing.... Truth will set us free. Keep riding !
I love this video so much. God bless their beautiful souls!
I LOVE MY PEOPLE!!! THIS IS BEAUTIFUL!!!
💕
Ways to go I grew up on horses and I miss it, thanks for the video and history
I love it ! I'm envious.
That seems like a great program 👍 😀
A horse will never abandon you.....Neva!
More and more people are going back to country life, which is awesome. I think it's healthy. I don't think God meant for us to be in such an insane rush that the cities promote. I think he wants us to see his handiwork in nature. And what better way than on a horse!
Amazing my early years with my dad and with some elementary school friends brings back good memories!
Awesome story.
"There is nothing as good for the inside of a man as the outside of a horse.'

Need to make a movie on this. Am a trail rider in N.C. Much love from N.C.
What up NC!!!! Keep Roll'n 🐎
I think you all are awesome and amazing! Keep up the ridin and setting the example for the young people!
I love this....but please don't ride these horses for any length of time on the pavement. It is very damaging to their hooves, even if they wear shoes. The concussion can cause a condition called road founder, please research it. Thanks, God Bless
They are wearing shoes
@@darthsol658 horse shoes are bad. Horse shoes stop the impaction of sinking in to their hooves. Horse shoes makes their knees and legs sore.
@@Roses6858 no it doesnt. It protects them from hard ground such as roads. It prevents the hooves from getting cuts
@@darthsol658 no they don’t please look it up shoes are bad for horses
@@rebeccazimmerman870 yes they do please look it up
Right on. Great video.
I really enjoyed this video. Love the sense of community. Love horses. Love cowboys 🤠💕

East side.
I never knew it was was a black cow boys and cow girls we ride horses 🐎 that’s beautiful
In the past black cowboys were the only ones they just whitewashed history as usual
WONDERFUL❗😂👌👍❤🙏
Awesome testimony
Horse's gives us freedom to the soul. From arkansas.
Wow I love horses although I’ve never rode one , but the weird part is every time I see one it’s like I feel drawn to them their eyes the are amazing . A man on my street accused me of feeding his horse cuz his horse always came to me . Anyway I have a dream to one day go on. Trail ride and ride a horse
Celeste Nicole, I hope someday you get a horse or at least ride. I started begging for a pony when I was 3 years old. Finally got one when I was 15yr. old. Had horses ever since.
Awesome ✌️horses will do this for you, give you ☮️
Real shit right deauh ya heardmeh!
I need to get a hold of Austin or Central Texas trailride calendar so I can come down...
Muy bien, mi jente 👌🏼
Amen 🙏🖤🖤🖤👏👏👏👏👏👏
Yes!!! Love my city.
A Town!!🐎
I love this. I want to be part of this
Wya?
Amen Brothers
I love seeing black cowboys and cowgirls
wow!
Amen Amen
Great on pet for the people but some of these horses are really underweight and horses trotting on concrete can really damage those horses feet and skeleton, some of the riders are also too big for the horse they’re riding horses can only carry 20 percent of their body weight)
So true that the best thing for the inside of a person is the horse. Idk what I'd have done in my life if I hadn't had a horses mane to cry into.
I can’t ride right now but if I could I would luv to ride with y’all!!
Luv that

The Native Americans saw black riders as great adversaries. They’re the ones who gave them the name “Buffalo soldier.” Because they charged the battlefield with great power
What? Black people are native americans 😂 so they saw themselves as great adversaries or are you talking about $5 dollar indians?
👍👍
💯🔥❤️
I am originally from Cali, buy my wife family is all from Texas and are exactly like the people in this video. My wife family are all into trail rides, rodeos, riding horses, roping cattle and zydeco music. It was even a culture shock for me when I moved to Texas. I didn't fit in with the white kids because I was Black, but didn't fit in with the Black kids because I was not into this type of lifestyle or drive ATV's. It was literally racism on both sides. The only reason I think me and my wife actually hit it off was because we had similar values when it came down to certain things, but I am still not into this lifestyle.
Core morals and values nearly connects us anyway! Alot of us, our roots are from the country and this is a part of our heritage across the map. It doesn't matter if your not into the lifestyle. The lifestyle welcomes you anyhow!!! Its the Cowboy way!!💯💪🏾🐎
That's not racism on both sides. The black side you just didn't find your group stop with the dramatics
🙏❤👍
Country❤❤❤❤
Look at them steppas at the beginning boy y’all get on and get
How do I get in touch with these folks....my daughter has a racking horses she rescued & he needs someone who rides racking horses...he needs someone who needs him....
I miss Austin. And, i love the East side of Austin!

I wonder if any of these so called black people know they are isrealites? Will they tell the children who they are or pass that along too. Some of those very horses they are riding are the same pedigree that was in King Solomon stables STOP A MOMENT AND THINK ABOUT THAT. Shalom.
Why such a fast hard trot on concrete? Looks painful to the horses.
Our horses are healthy and well taking care of, sorry you feel that way😘
@@kamebrooks2732 girl you know how white people are, they staying hating and crying about animals don’t won’t blink an eye at a black man getting kneed in the neck until dead
@@dalaimama4362 the horses are beautiful...most of the people commenting on abuse are keyboard warriors and not to be taken seriously...using the TWH or other gaited breeds is a blessing to see..the connection is a beautiful thing..I'm sorry it had to turn to hate speech...ride on!!
@@kamebrooks2732 they only care about their own feelings. They don't care about the horse. They need to ruin joy, the joy some humans can't contain when they live with horses. This joy is what really hurts them. If these horse haters had their way none of us would own horse, work horses, race or jump horses. There deliberate ignorance wants horses made irrelevant and set them free , relegated to extinction. Imagine in NYC the horses are temperature controlled, but they should be free at the same time, so there is no logic. They just really want everything horse deleted.
Statesman. We're all migrating to Bitchute. No more youtube
Poor Horse
Kids should have helmets on
When you call yourself a black women vs woman you continue the racist stigmas.... Coming from a man with downsyndrome trying to help yall rise above the subconscious programming and set a positive example for the youth!!!😍😍
I can’t stand these gated horses being run on the bitumen. That’s how they get shin splints and fractures. You should NOT be going any faster than a gentle trot on bitumen, that’s just for the safety and comfort of the horse
But yet you forced yourself to watch.
And spread your misery.
2021 y are will still bringing color into to everything?? Y couldn't it jus b a man on his horse are a woman on her horse?? Y does it always have to be abt the color of our skin!?!?
This is america a country and society that's built and functions on race. If she's proud she can be proud of her race 🤡
Not true riders. Horse abusers. Horse should not gallop on roads because it hurts and damages their hooves!
Ghetto horsemanship 👎
@@12WDA Racist as usual
@@12WDA⬅️ obsessed white mediocrity 😂😂
Love that you guys are riding horses but why does it have to be about color? I'm a minority woman. I never feel like I'm treated differently because of color. And I don't ever treat anyone else differently because of their color. Regardless of what color it is. I just don't understand why everybody makes humans about color differences
You live in America and in Austin? Good for you that you've never experienced anything in reference to the topic! We will keep doing our thing and staying motivated off of comments like this😘
that’s YOUR personal experience. but as a black person we get treated differently by everybody, hell OTHER people of color. we find comfort in certain shit and being with each other because we know it’s fr us against everybody.
@@kamebrooks2732 it's not a put-down I'm glad you're enjoying it I just don't understand having to bring color into it. Being with animals is a blessing no matter who you are or where you are.
You're not even black so stop trying to dictate how we move
