  • Based on a few comments I received on reddit, I figured it could be helpful to make a video about some building fundamentals I use when building. I don't cover how to build, where to find materials or how to use the building tool as there are already plenty of videos on this already, and instead put out some tips in regards to designing your base with purpose.

I’m very picky when building in any games. You have great taste and I appreciate seeing someone on CZcams who is sharing their ideas and inspiration. We need more!

3:25 jettying the overhang is called jettying. It came to be because people where given a certain footprint to build their home and to get more room the jettied their homes; another reason it was done is the floor boards would bow under the weight of things and people on it so the overhanging weight of the walls would counteract the bowing of the first second etc floors to keep them level therefore this was done for EVERY FLOOR abovethe ground floor.
The English medieval period (The Middle Ages) started 476 AD (in year of the lord) and ended in 1485; the late medieval period started in 1300 and ended in 1500. Which gave way to the beginning of the Renaissance period. The name medieval comes from medi-, meaning "middle", and ev-, meaning "age", medieval literally means "of the Middle Ages." Though the Dark Ages is used interchangeably with these two, it is the start of the Middle Ages and the fall of the western roman empire.
1066 CE is regarded as the beginning of the English Middle ages and this is because of The Battle of Fulford 20/09/1066 then it was the battle of Stamford Bridge 25/09/66 and then the Infamous Battle of Hastings 14/10/66

    • (Flying) Buttress(es).
    • Vaulted ceiling.
    • Semicircular arches archivolt (Romanesque)
    • Pointed/scissor/stilted/Catenary arch archivolt (Gothic)
    • ossuaries/catacombs
    • Bastion is tower structure to reinforce the portcullis
    • Barbican is a gatehouse away from the main castle
    • Turrets

    • Crow-Stepped Gables
    • Solar room (above great hall)
    • tracery windows (Gothic)
    • Jettying
    • Whitewash & pastel wash (only for villages small towns, large towns & cities wouldn't pay for pastel washing it was expensive)
quoin Stones (not medieval, Ancient Roman renaissance)
4:40 arch not arc and that does not look Gothic at all what you've tried to do is create a Gothic Archivolt but failed due to lack of space; if you where to re-do this make it alot taller to get the POINTED arch as pointed is Gothic and Semi-circular is Romanesque an Archivolt is smaller arches closer to the door and get bigger the more to comes away from the door. These Archivolts are used for grandeur builds.
10:30 these are called Crenellations. The four walls that protrude at the top of your wall (which yours are to small to protect a person they are as big as a person) are called Merlons and the gaps that one would shoot from are the Crenels and those three gaps at the bottom of your Crenellations are called Machicolations they line up with the crenels and all together these make up the Crenellations/Battlements/Ramparts.

Thank you for sharing your insights and showing that experimenting with the materials is best. Would love to see various types of builds you do!

Thanks, I've uploaded a castle I built just recently where I put a lot of that to work, it's more of a tour, though a lot of the techniques are seen throughout.
I'm also working on a tavern build in between my free time, which I'll upload in the near future if you're interested in seeing the build progression :)

This was incredible. I'd love to see a tutorial showing how specific materials will interact to obtain specific results, such as how you did with the machicolations! I love those! I tend to post the really helpful build videos in my Discord for friends to view if they would like to in order to gain inspiration for their own builds. Likewise, it makes it much easier for me to find them when I need to rewatch something for a reference. This is definitely going into that channel!
