  • This week, I explore what Volkswagen Golf you can buy for a £15,000 budget.
To help me with this, I have invited Jude! Who is an owner of a Volkswagen Golf MK7.5 Golf GTI PP.
Exploring the options on Autotrader or the used car market, £15,000 currently will buy a decent Golf MK7 GTI OR a decent MK6 R (R20).
At the end of the video I will also reveal another option which you can buy for around the £15,000 too.

I have a 2010 R, in fact I’ve owned it from new, along with a 911, BMW 1M ect. In this comparison for me the Mk6R is much more raw, a more involving drive rather like my other 'drivers' cars. My wife uses it mainly. Recently a wet day disinclined me from taking the my other cars to a track event so I stole the golf from the wife, it was a short course, tight and twisty with a standing start. I know the circuit well but spent the morning session coming to grips with the R's idiosyncrasies, the brakes in particular are poor. I was in in about 4th position by lunch time, how having a good grasp of the way the Golf performed I deployed the launch control for the last few laps resulting in the fastest lap of the day. Although im pretty experienced (which im sure played a big part) the Golf was on 5yr old tyres with shopping bags flying around in the boot and roof rack still in place. Such a good little car, partially in the wet.
Back to my point, the Mk6 is a far better drivers car than the Mk7, fewer synthetic layers between the driver and the road, less refined, a more immersive car.

Thanks for commenting Adrian, really appreciate your input!
You've got quite the collection there!
In terms of the raw experience of the car, I totally agree with that. And like a friend of mine, he also much prefers the driving experience of his 997 Turbo because it is the last of the models before they introduced much more driver aids and tech.
Putting that aside I personally prefer handling on MK7 GTI, and even if it was a MK6 GTI. I would probably say the same thing! Mainly because I much prefer the how a light front wheel drive car feels and handles on b roads.
In your case, on a wet track or road. I would much prefer the Golf R!

Lol. The bias is very strong with you lol. If you want a raw AWD experience, buy an EVO. The MK6 R is far from being a raw experience, and is inferior in just about every aspect compared to the MK7. I own an MK7 GTI, and have had extensive drive time with my buddies previous MK6 R. They feel very similar in driving tbh. The MK6 R obviously gets out better due to AWD, and is faster because it has more power stock, but everything else feels similar. I would say the MK7 GTI has better steering feel and chassis development for sure!
If you’re keeping both cars stock, get the MK6 R. If you’re planning to modify, it’s no questions hands down get the MK7 GTI.

If it’s within your budget and ticks the boxes on what you need from a car currently, then why not? 😊👍
