Our visit to Hythe, Kent

- A chance to discover the ancient cinque port town of Hythe, on Kent's coast.
First a view of its shale beach, the small fishing boats, and the Martello towers in the distance. Then head back to the old town and discover the charm of the old town, and it's historic buildings.
Stroll back along its lanes to discover the 12th-century buildings, including St Leonard's Church with its Ossuary before heading back to the Royal Military Canal to see the folks enjoying the once defensive feature of Hythe.
Finally, we head down to Hythe Station on the Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch Railway and to check out the miniature steam railway.

We married in 1965 and lived on Castle Hill Ave. Loved the area, moved to Dungeness 1967 RNSSS cottages, worked at the A Station, thanks for the memories. Terry Johnson Taranaki NZ.
Terry, that is great to hear, glad it brought back fond memories. Hopefully you got to see our video on Dungeness too.
We're off to Greatstone today, so will probably pass through Hythe on the way.
Anyway, I hope all is good in NZ; you must be heading into your winter soon. We've had a few days of sunshine, so it's feeling a little more summery here now after a very wet winter.

Why not? now the school holidays are out of the way, so it should be a little more peaceful. We're not sure Hythe has changed too much over the years; we always like popping back once in a while.

Romney Marsh is a wonderful place, and one that we return to many times. Actually, we love all the Kent coast from Whitstable around to Dungeness, each place being a little different.

Hello I am Simon Tandy 51 from maidstone Kent.Hythe is lovely.i used to go to a boarding school called Seabrook Lodge along Seabrook Road.hythe.i was there between 1982 and April 1987..
Nice places hythe are great .the military canal.seafront and esplanard.memorys of town centre and saltwood and saltwood castle .wonderful hythe dymchurch and Romney railway.good memory's.
I will be re-visiting hythe and bring my wife and daughter down..plus go and Hythe town
Football team play opersition at the hythe town stadium.
One last thing.it is a lovely walk from seafront starting from imperial hotel along to sandling and along to folkestone.
Hi Simon, Thanks for the comment - we've not that far from you in the village of Eccles. Hythe is a little bit special, a seaside town, that's not really. We're lucky in Kent that we have so much access to a coastline, and there are so many different coastal towns, all a little bit different than each other. Like the ideal of that walk - it may make it onto a video at some point into the future.

Lovely vlog. My sister and I are staying x 3 nights in Hythe, Kent, in a cottage overlooking the sea. It’s a beautiful town that has almost avoided modernisation 🏖️☀️🌊

Jimmy Hendrix bass player Noel Redding came from Hythe, after Hendrix past away he played with Rory gallagher and lived somewhere outside Cork city .
Kevin, now that's an interesting fact. He's made it onto the list of notable people on the Hythe wiki page - It always surprises me when a household name, or somebody you've heard of lives, or grew up, somewhere you know, and it's an unassuming little place.
Never knew he played with Rory!

I practically grew up on that beach where the boats are ,,,,the hut is gone now it was nearest the Martello tower next to the range masters lookout,,,,,love Hythe many happy memories with my Dad and uncle fishing. Brilliant video new subscriber 💥

I guess that's the benefit of the town & beach separated by the Royal Military Canal; you never feel that close to the sea when you wander down the high street, but it is just a stone's throw away
Oh and by the miniature railway is Scanlon Bridge named after a bloke who came from Cork he guarded the bridge from smugglers apparently.

Lucky you, nice place to live, although we could do with a bit of a British summer - a little too grey and damp for my liking, although we were there last Wednesday and it was glorious 😍
I often visit ossuaries. They are mostly found in Catholic churches here in Switzerland.
Is the church in your video also Catholic?
Now that's an interesting comment. I believe it is Church of England, or Anglican protestant, however, the church dates from the 12th-century and the bones possibly date from the 13th-15th century, so before England's break with Rome, and so would have been Catholic at the time. I also understand there are only 2 ossuaries in England, so this is pretty rare. Thanks so much for watching. Take care, stay safe.
Hythe is the town where Elizabeth Bowen, the anglo Irish writer, spent her early and late years.

In my opinion her best novels (beware of the short stories) are the house in Paris, To the north, the death of the heart and the last september which was turned into a fascinating film available on youtube. My last visit to Hythe was in 2017, and, for me, I consider the Military Canal it`s most attractive feature by far. Of course, as a Medieval Historian, I did take some time to look at the ossuarie, which are most commonly associated with the Black Death, not to everyone`s interest :)
Sadly, my other abiding memory of Hythe, was using what I would have to say were the smelliest public toilets in quite some time - stunk to high heaven :(
So, a thumbs up, and a thumbs down for this little town !
We love Deal; it's such a quaint place. It definitely doesn't seem like a coastal town. It also seems to be stuck in a time warp; hence the facilities perhaps need a refresh - anyway, it's a grey old day in England today, so more planning, I think. Stay safe, stay well 😍

An interesting aside regarding Hythe - a few years ago the Isle of Man TT racer, truck mechanic and holder of numerous land speed records Guy Martin made an attempt to cycle his way from Hythe beach to France, held aloft by a balloon ! Unfortunately the coastal winds were against him, but he does now hold a record ( of sorts ) for distance traveled during the attempt :)
I meant to type Hythe, not Deal. I must have been trying to multitask, always a mistake. We big fans of Guy Martin, and we saw that project. His latest one was to learn to fly a Hurricane, similar to those pilots who fought in the 'Battle of Britain'. Great viewing

I only became aware of Guy Martin through a colleague, who has been involved with an Isle of Man TT sponsorship arrangement over some years - mechanics ( of any sort ) has never been particularly strong with me, but Martin`s name crops up from time to time - a quite talented Northern lad, and a sharp wit too !
I have seen the Hurricane project quite recently, but with an aircraft valued at 3 Million Pound, the insurance ramifications must have been quite a flight in itself - do you not agree :)
