What did I Ruin?!? Dad's 1966 Buick Skylark Gets Baer Disc Brake Upgrades!

- During the first drive of the season in my father's 1966 Buick Skylark I heard a strange noise coming from the right front wheel, which left us stranded and needing a tow home. After inspecting the damage it was time to give the car some upgrades with Baer disc brakes up front (SKU 4301432) and new shocks all the way around. No, this one is NOT FOR SALE! As always, thanks for watching!

My first comment ever, hope I got this right.
I'm the proud owner of the '66 Buick Skylark and the very proud father of Mortske. Words can't express my sincere appreciation to Mortske for keeping our family's legacy alive by resurrecting the Jeepster and all the updates to the Buick. My entire family has always had a passion for old cars, particularly hot rods. I thought I had fair amount of automotive knowledge, but then Mortske turned 12 years old and his passion and range of automotive knowledge left me in the dust.
Many thanks to all you viewers who help make Mortske channels successful!
Sorry I put your rotors on backwards!
Wow Papa Mortske’s first comment and what a great one. I really enjoy your son’s videos he seems to be a great guy and helpful to friends and neighbors also volunteering in the community. PS love his sense of humor and movies. 👍
You did a fine job raising your son.
Yep, got goosebumps over papa Mortske 's comment.
No problem. Woulda performed perfectly while driving in reverse!
Hey boys and girls! Guess what?!? I put the rotors on the wrong sides. 50/50/90 Rule strikes again!!
Meh happens.
Doh!
NOOOOOOOIO!!!
It happens with those fancy slotted & drill rotors an Baur calipers.. but least you realized shortly after.. nice ride tho Mortski.. enjoy the content sir have a great time n keep it going..
I was gonna point out the rotor-reversal! LOL. Schtuff happens.
your persona is a grumpy guy but i smile with the thought you sir are just a good given soul. underneath the hard exterior you are softer than baby you know what. have a great day !
don't tell anyone
You’re such a good son. You’ve really hooked your dad up with the Buick. I know he’s grateful.
So, at one point in time, Mojo was the kid trimming the bushes that didn't know anything. We all start out with no knowledge or skills, those come with time, practice, and hopefully someone that's willing to teach.
Ya, teach your kids how to survive and support themselves, parents won’t be around forever to take care of them
Kids mowing for a few extra bucks (let alone to hang around a garage and maybe learn a thing or three) are getting rarer and rarer.
Are you the kid he hired??🤣
@Max Hammontree nope, but I am someone just like you that's been in that kids' place. No one starts out knowing everything they need to know.
I have to agree. I always say nobody is born knowing anything. We all need a teacher. I think the saying is "the student is only as good as the teacher".
Seeing North Dakota again reminds me how much I love Arizona! You are hard core Mortske!
Glad to see Mojo being a little more comfortable in front of the camera!
Thanks for taking us along on all the latest Duff & Mortske shenanigans! Y'all have a great day!!
I’m so jealous of y’all getting to work with your dads. My dad passed in 1994. Enjoy every chance you get.
Mine passed in 86 just before my first son was born.
My Dad passed in 2012
@@kimberlywilliams9757 My son's father is making big changes so he sticks around longer.
Lost mine at 19, it’s already been 2 years… he was around to help me get started fixing up a 71 Cadillac though.
Lost dad in 13 and it still hurts like it was last month
Miss you dad, I sure would like an ass chewing for doing something not so bright!
Good Monday always with hanging out with Sir Mortske😊
The way i usually get those races off is take a wizzer wheel and cut almost all the way thru it, then take a air hammer or chisel and smack it and crack it. Slides right off with no damage to the spindle
be careful pulling with chains mate. a lot of people die in exactly that situation, putting a feed bag close to the hook might save your life, it slows down the speed of the fast moving object, you learn that pretty fast when you go 4x4 on beaches here in Australia
I've seen people hang stuff from tow ropes and never knew why... Thanks for sharing & hope more people read that. ¯\_ಠ_ಠ_/¯
@@ronaldrey8474 its very effective when the end goes flying, ive also seen people put their hoods up to protect themselves but the bag or a towel or coat works best
@@stevencox75 I understand and Thank You again for sharing 👍 Will do it the safe way next time , crazy I never asked why and should of !! I learn something new from Mort every time with out MOTOR TREND DRAMA ya know
I recently started doing a few cars with my dad and have to say I am really enjoying it. Your dad must be really proud and grateful for everything you done on his car
awesome!
I love to see young Agg working things out🇺🇸,someone has too keep the tradition going!!
Looks like buzz light year needs a kinetic rope for when he gets stuck, it’d probably popped out on two tugs, with the trailer.
Duff Dog is the Soul of America!
Good Pup...
Thanks Mort!
Good morning Mr Mortske and Duff from Alabama
First
To clean the headliner: Get a bucket of fairly soapy water. Make a lot of suds. Put just the suds on a scrub brush and scrub a spot then quickly vacuum it up with the shop vac. It allows you to pick up the dirt without making water spots.
glad to see you putting love and care into your ride!
If you're an old man, I'm ancient. I really like what you are doing with your pop's Buick. She is one classy ride.
I've never converted from drums to disks or the other way, but shocks make a huge difference in how a vehicle handles and just how much it can improve the experience of driving it
Great Morski Monday. Something to watch on the television
The skylark is a nice ride ! With these upgrades even better thanks for sharing it and your towing services ! Take care Duff and Sir !
Love your videos and you doing things for your Dad!
Gotta love life in the upper Midwest! All this episode lacked was a visit to Menards. Always appreciate your and Chin's work..
Who ever edited this video is the best. Great production.
Chin does well!
Brings back memories when i had a Buick Skylark GS. It was a peppy cruiser. Definitely a sporty road boat. Lots of metal and steel in cars those days.
A couple more items crossed off the To Do list, and a few more added on. That's the way it always seems to go. Your good neighbor skills are right up there!! Glad Old Duff got some wind in his fur this week. Keep up the good work. Always great to spend Monday with you!
Mortske Monday! All Right! Best way to start a work week!
Happy Mortske Monday! Get ‘er done and have fun! ❤️👍👊🙏💪💪
Great way to start a Monday! Mortske, Mojo and Sir Duff, btge trifecta. Another great video. Love see you helpthe neighbors, the way things use to be, needvto grt back to. God bless
Your not grumpy, people just don’t get your sense of humor!
Thanks for taking me along on your adventures.
OUr pleasure!
Awsome find.. thanks again Mortsky. I like horse trading my self. Old school ways. Back when things were simple.
Awesome job getting that trailer out.. way to 'Git r Done' ol' boy
Oooo that tick got my skin crawling 🦂🐞🦗🐜🕷️🦀
nasty lil buggers
☕Another GREAT Mortske Monday vid!!!!! 👍
Have a wonderful day Mort. 👍👍👍
same to you terrence!
You may want to invest in a good jerk strap for all that recovery goodness, way easier on you and equipment. I was waiting for the old exploder to leave some frame rail on the ground. The old Buick just keeps getting better, I think your pop leaves it at your place for all the great things you keep doing to it, nice work.
Matt's off road recovery rope, or a Yankum rope would go a long way in those situations.
So glad that you take care of your dad's vehicle. I bet Duff really enjoyed the ride. Thank you for sharing 😊
So much fun helping neighbors. Always ends up being more than you expected. I complain about doing it also but when you need help you hope they'll be there.
Always!
Love Mortske, Mojo and Duff Mondays! .....None of my business but last year you put the LS in as a fathers day present. You loved it but did you Dad love it, especially after working on the nail head for so long.....I love resto mods and originals the same.
He most definitely appreciates it. If he didn't I wouldn't be putting more work into it. It's also not a Nailhead.
Wow your even colder than Alaska. My snow was gone earlier.. I won't be moving there. Lol.
Mojo. The man, the myth, the legend
I was hollerin at ya about the rotors!!! And pastrami to let the trailer down and get the bobcat out with the bucket, then fetch the trailer with the handler...course its hard to tell sides on camera anyways. The only helper i ever had in 10 years of mobile repair was my daughter who started at 10 yrs old was smarter and more talented then guys with 20 yrs experience....she even pointed out stuff i missed lol....UNBELIEVABLE!!
Wowsers. Well at least it's fixed right now. Great job. Keep up the good work
Great video. I'm glad you posted keep them coming thanks
hey hey time to play in the mud. Cool brakes. Hi duff. Thanks Mr. Mortske
"It's always nice to have a supportive father. I wouldn't know about that." - Duff, everytime Papa Mortske comes to visit. He just wants all those belly rubs.
Thanks Mortske, I had a really tough day today, i needed this to help take my mind off of things, thank you so much
Glad to hear it!
When my father was alive He had 4 airplanes one of the airplanes didn't have brakes, people told him that he needs brakes! my dad told them you don't need brakes in the air, lol. My Dad's Dad father my grandfather flew with him in a Super Cub from Idaho to Alaska how many people have the balls to do that! Miss them , they would be turning onto their grave seeing what's happened to this country.
Good show Mortske & Duff dog
I got pulled over by OHP this past weekend but I think he clocked the car in front of me doing 75 in a 65, but I think my speedometer is off a bit too. I didn't get a ticket though, he said he would chaulk it up to a "ghost reading". Thank goodness!
Lucky!
Good-day Lord Duff good day sir hope all is well as always give Duff some love and pets 🐶
Love this thing. Proper sympathetic restomod, restrained patina and gets out of its own way rapidly in style. Just the bizznezz. Kudos to you, sir 🤟🏼😎
Those old ford 2 valve with the 4r70w’s are bullet proof. One of the best combos ever.
We're only an hour in and I gotta comment...at 57:20 it's definitely time Mortske Off Road recovery invested in some kinetic recovery ropes. Disc brakes on the Buick and yanking on a chain seem like opposite ends current technology. Play safely!
Send us one!
Your Dad and Mom have raised a good son.
Wow it's like snowing one episode, t-shirt the next! Bet your enjoying the warmer weather.
Thanks Mortske, that's one under cover badass Buick.
Central California watching
Had a fun time running around your neighborhood with you picking up rust .have a good week
Thank you as always Mojo and Duff. 👌👍👌
Another great video Mortske, Thanks!
Good show alittle bit of everything Duff mr.kool
I've had some Buick 's 😊
You probly already heard. Did you see Brent ,from half ass customs, lost his shop,to a fire. He's moved in to a smaller garage ,now. He and his family are ok,all things considered. If you can think of any resources you can share .I'm sure he could use the support. Thanks again Mortsky, you're awsome.!!!
Another great show! Good job being an all around great guy and getter unstucker dude!
Ha
A good Friend told me to get away from the main roads in the country, there are a lot of old vehicles that not many people see as they are away from the beaten path. Some he found would surprise you.
Dang right!
Buick time...
Sounds great !
To each their own, I have been fortunate and good enough to get Drums to stop on a dime. All in the adjustment and the set up of your brakes. I have both of them and their both adequate to get the machine stopped at the light.
I really agree with what you said , that you'd rather drive them than spend time detailing and polishing the engine bay or the top side of the muffler.
exactly!
That's cool to help out the locals lol.
And get some metal scrap in return.
Smoke screen from Canada's fire in the sun.
Nice work on the buick as well
Be safe all.
Mo jo and Bill should start their own channel I would watch that 24/7!!!!!
Hey Mortske: And like a good neighbor, Mortske is there... Whether its working the Buick, towing out your neighbors, or salvaging parts... You're always on the spot!!!... From the home of PB Blaster and Permatex... Cleveland. Ohio... (Sammitches to ce;ebrate!!!!)
The purpose of the residual valve in drum brakes only is to maintain enough pressure in the system to prevent water, air, or any other contaminants from entering the system. It will never hold enough pressure to overcome the springs. If it did, you would have dragging brakes. The adjusters have the job of determining how close the shoes are to the drum. That split master cylinder was a great idea. One of the few laws for cars I can get behind. Discs are better. No question, but unless you are racing, you don't need them. I am still running manual drums on my 66 and it has better brakes than my 99 that has power 4 wheel discs. Proper adjustment and maintenance is all you need.
That's why your the man, and I only know one or two people who are involved and ready to tear into and enjoy making brake line.
My boss lives less than a mile away & he has a ?? If im remember correctly a 320 Bobcat with tracks & also a Guil telihandler with sevral different attachments for both. We use them for his solor business. But I can't even describe how handy those are! There ain't hardly nuthin we can't get dun with that equipment.
Awesome!
This video made for a nice long nap. Thank you sir!
Our pleasure
That's pretty neat! Thanks man,Hadn't seen that setup for brakes before.
Hey Mortske 👋, thanks for sharing 👍
Hello Mortske, I remember the same thing happened to my 72' Swinger. I actually froze it and shattered it off of the spindle, it was very quick and the cleanup well I had to sand down the area a little bit. It wasn't bad enough to replace it that's for sure. I didn't have torches all I had was a little map gas torch well it was easier to freeze it considering I was out in -27 already. Putting discs on the front of that is really going to make any Improvement that's for sure. I know your dad will be happy! Keep up the good work and many blessings as always
My sister got her neck ripped open by a flying trailer hitch ball. Got stuck in a CJ5 and they tugged on it a little too hard. Flew up through the back window. She didn't get out because of being in a mud bog. But anyways -- always safety first Mr. Mortske. Never yank on those balls.
I've seen a lot of these off-road recovery channels yankin' on trailer hitches and such and I cringe when I see that. They say 'I've done this a thousand times - never had a problem - it's rated for it' but it only takes one time you know?
@@W1se0ldg33zer Or flexin their rig driving it on an unsupported trailer then they're stunned when the trailer rig combo is doing cartwheels behind the tow rig.
I used to be a production welder fabricating trailer hitches, 800 per day and QC inspection was zero percent.
Ole Mortske is a pretty good operator on that Bobcat ‘cmon!
I can't believe nobody has bought the Nomad. I just finished mine. Taking it on Hot Rod Power Tour!
Awesome!!! It actually just sold yesterday! Send us an email, did you find your emblem?
Early Father's Day present for the Buick. 👍👍😎 Good job Mort!
Thanks David!
I had a '72 Buick Skylark 2 dr 350 with auto trans. I wish I had that car now. They have some really good lines that warrant souping up.
Mortske, while in the military 69 through 72. I drove an m88 track retriever. Would tow two tanks in a straight line. The tow bar weighed 250 lb! Lol. Your technique is good in my opinion. Thanks for the entertainment, I miss Duff.
crazy!
Morty had me spooked I thought his pops car would be all wrecked up😅!
Hit n run?! Ohhh just a "break" issue--😂😂😎✌
See ya next Monday my brother.
"Dingus" trimmin the bush ( and jackin it, no doubt), that is pretty much what a young guy is good for. At least he showed up. Nice upgrade for the Buick. Thanks for the Monday morning cheer up!
I might have done both new spindles while I was there, but that's just me. When I upgraded my 67 Chevelle's 4-wheel manual drums to front disc brakes, I did both spindles because they came with the kit, and also stepped up to power brakes. Night and day difference! Good show, Mortske, as always. Thanks for the vids, man!
We did
@@MortskeRepair Cool.

Mondays couldn't get any better. 😎👍🏼
Good morning Mortske and Duff, good morning to mojo as well, he seems a little less camera shy 😉 it's good to see the Buick doing so well. You're a good neighbor, maybe you should advertise for off-road rescuing 😂 keep up the good work and the cool videos 👍✌️🇺🇲
I put new calipers on backwards once and wondered why they wouldn`t bleed haha... This is a seriously sweet Buick, and your Da is getting a great return on investing in you...
I’ve seen that before
Great video as always! I don't know why I was yelling at my TV when he had the skid steer stuck ( Put the trailer down!) 😅😅. Have a great weekend and Memorial Day weekend brother. Be safe and have fun
Same to you!
I was yelling at the video the entire time when you put those rotors on backwards. Good to see you caught the error after the fact!
whoops!
Excellent got bonus content with the telehandler.
Enjoy your video's, Don't tell Puddin. Plus i love the way you Chat with Duff. I really think he understands you.
A while ago I installed a corvette style power master dual cylinder on my 65 GMC, using the little push rod tool to measure the pushrod distance really made all the difference on performance and it gets even more important with the booster on.
I didn't even know such a tool existed until today!
Circuit city used to sell a small box with aux in that you plugged into the antenna port on the back of a radio. Supply power and a switch to turn it on and off and it would broadcast on several frequencys while blocking the antenna input.
Good morning mortske
Cool video. Enjoyed watching ✌️ 😎
Love that Skylark, it's still the best car on the channel.
