  • YES, I am a HUGE FAN of Spyro the Dragon. Been playing it since I developed consciousness. Though I do videos on games all the time, I don't normally do "reviews". For Spyro, however, I need to make an exception. Should you pick up the Reignited Trilogy? Listen on and find out.

    Anyone who has problems with adults at any age geeking out over something that's nostalgic to them needs to grow up.

      I fully agree. I run into way too many NPCs who think that cherishing a game or movie from your childhood that you enjoyed somehow makes you a creep. It’s like people aren’t allowed to be happy anymore when they get older. Way too much judgement being passed over insignificant things.

    • @Coyotebub
      @Coyotebub Před 5 lety +10

      Nobody McNobody It’s a term used to describe someone who doesn’t put any thought into their opinions and just falls in line with what society dictates. So in this case, the hypothetical NPC is someone who passes judgement on somebody else for enjoying Spyro games under the false pretense that Spyro games are for kids, and adults shouldn’t enjoy things made for kids.

    I don't understand the censoring. They censored the gun use in the Twilight Harbor to just paint ball guns and to slingshots in Scorch, but in Spyro 3, the dinosaurs wielded revolvers with actual bullets. What gives?

      @BaneDane_JB Před 4 lety +5

      Its even weirder considering if their concern was "influence on kids", you can objectively get easier access to a revolver over a mini-gun or whatever Blunderbuss looking rifles they had.

    I agree that Gulp is definitely harder in this version. His chase attack seems harder to dodge, usually just running would do the trick but now you almost have to let him jump and then run.
    His aiming is also seemingly improved, again, whilst running his shots seem way better at aiming so the boss is much easier if you just stand still and slowly dodge them.

    Did anyone else have trouble getting used to the characters now having teeth? I found myself getting creeped out every single time a new npc appeared in Spyro 2 because they had so many teeth, i think the lack of it is what made all of them so goofy and adorable in the originals LMAO the Shrek looking ones from Idol Springs and Colossus to me were some of the worst. Also Greta and Handel's new design feels very weird to me, I always thought they would look like the powerpuff girls lol
    Also, my most favorite part of the whole reignited trilogy is how now every single dragon in spyro 1 has an exclusive new design that match their homeworld. I didn't care much about them in the original because most of them just looked the same with slightly different tweaks. In reignited i found myself super excited to see what they would look like and I could even imagine what their life would be like in their homes based on their looks, it's amazing and I love it

    I love the reignited trilogy but I had so many nitpicks because I am such a huge fan of the originals, particularly Ripto's Rage. The Gulp fight is punishing at times, the change in his attack patterns and how they operate really threw me off. I hate the interpretation of Hunter. The original voice was that of the "scared pussycat" but was juxtaposed by his actions. While the new voice comes off as being too cool. I love that the original voice actor for Ripto came back for Ripto, he always had one of my favorite villain voices from my childhood but I found the delivery of some of his lines to just be... off. I felt the overall the delivery in the original game was just a bit better.

    After replaying all the games, I never realized how dark it was. Especially Ripto's Rage. The amount of death happening in the opening/outro scenes of levels is amazing. Guy get's crushed by meteor, guy get's pushed into lava, guy plummets to his death, guy gets crushed by a T-rex, etc. for almost every level someone dies at the beginning and end.

      Old comment I know. However I dont think theres was any way of coming out of this particular topic objevtively better than the originals. If they changed nothing in the designs but just gave everything depth and resolution in the new models, people might have called it lazy. But there was no way any redesigns would habe been able to overcome the nostalga factor either.

    I’ve been playing Spyro since it’s inception. Ripto’s Rage is by far my favorite. I feel like the hover control is slightly glitchy because it works sometimes and other times you fall down a cliff. I also feel like Sparx’s gem grab radius is severely reduced from the original games. And I do agree that Gulp is harder as well. His bomb attacks lead you more making them impossible to dodge if you’re just running in a circle whereas in the original, running in a circle is almost always a viable tactic

    I am not particularly happy that they have slightly raised the landing points for glides so they need an absolutely perfect glide in spyro 1 to make them,. As a veteran of Spyro, Gulp seemed a lot harder to fight now than he did back on the original. Especially the trophy for not taking any damage at all. The changes in Scorch with the soldiers and Bob's name changed was done for Political reasons ("Guns" and the word "Bomb". Not trying to go too far but just remember that the original was before the events of 9/11.

    You absolutely NAILED this review, I pretty much agree with you on every single point you made although I would add that the newer controls or whatever it is made the super charge challenge in tree tops from Spyro 1 WAY harder, I ended up dying over 20 times and got at least 3 game over screens just from trying to complete that one section as it seemed that unless you pushed the jump button at the exact right millisecond you would end up falling to your death, that was the only major criticism I could make but I think it's fixable. I also agree with you about hunter, I didn't like his new personality at all and I don't really know how it's supposed to appeal to a younger audience but then again I'm also 23 years old and don't know what kids today are like. Also THANK YOU for pointing out how difficult Gulp was this time around, first time I fought him I lost within like 5 minutes and I thought it must be me doing something wrong but I'm finding out that a lot of people are having trouble with him, maybe it's the camera or the new controls? Either way I beat him eventually but I had to use the permanent super flame powerup in order to get the trophy/skill point from that fight. One other thing, did anyone feel like the camera this time around just wasn't always cooperating? Maybe I'm too used to classic spyro but I felt like the camera this time around was giving me a lot of extra trouble.

    Gulp was a difficulty spike that woke me up from a pleasant spyro haze for a while, for better or for worse. Made it feel that much better to get the superbreath reward and cheese the fight.
    I agree with most of your opinions, the games are better than I could have ever dreamed, and do wish to add my own addition minor complaints.
    Specifically, why cant we see the treasure pour out of spyro on his flight during the loading screens? And while the baby dragons are cute, I was frustrated to see repeat animations so early on, especially after all of the life poured into the first games dragons. Toys for Bob missed an opportunity to spice them up, but all of the extra love poured into 1 does help even it out.

    • @Antiformed
      @Antiformed Před 5 lety +2

      TFB heavily polished the first game, and 2/3 were largely outsourced (you can see this in the credits for 2 and 3). That's why the sequels recycle a lot of assets, and seem to be missing unique assets (the bellows level doesn't have a proper "bellows" asset like the original and uses generic assets instead, even though everyone still calls them bellows).

    • @Antiformed
      @Antiformed Před 5 lety

      Personally I don't think they had a choice. Activision gave them one extra-month to polish 3 detailed classic games, when they probably needed 3 or 4 months instead. It's kind of a miracle that the collection is as polished as it is. I was honestly a bit scared 2 and 3 would be riddled with glitches and crashes but it basically just amounted to the sequels having one less layer of polish than the first game, which is acceptable.

    I appreciate a review from a fan, since all the other reviews I watched were only saying how amazing Spyro Reignited is. As a Spyro fan for 20 years I wanted to hear some hard facts from other veteran fans - and do they have a problem with the same things as I have?
    First of all, all the small details and dislikes in aesthetics wise: I totally get why you didn't like Hunter. There were so many characters I didn't enjoy anymore because of their design: Crush, Gulp, Sheila, Hunter, Elora and don't forget those goats in Colossus (they were so cute and fatty!). Even Moneybags, who has gone to gym apparently or something in Reignited version. I just missed the proportions of the characters from original games. I wanted the characters to be just the same but in HD and that's probably why I hated Gulp and Crush the most. They were too Skylander aesthetics for my taste.
    This is a minor issue, but where are my beloved sound effects?! I noticed it the best while playing Spyro 2 & Zephyr. The elephant creatures didn't make any sound even though I was torching their butts. And I'm missing some small yet delightful minor details. In Spyro 2: Shady Oasis, the thieves did originally eat some apples from the trees if you dropped a few - and they even made the cutest mm-mm sound while doing so. Now you might think that this is the dumbest thing ever to miss, but these small secrets made the game so entertaining when I was a child and I was really looking forward to re-living these.
    Some actual problems to me were definately the Gulp boss fight. It was always so easy to me and now I had to actually try. Gulp was a way better shooter this time and he even ate the health chickens to get more health.
    On the other hand, some orb missions were either way too easy or a bit harder now. The one where you have to stop the dinosaurs from eating all the cavemen - too easy compared to the original. Or helping the alchemist and Hunter to take down the Earthshapers? I did them all in my first try. But nothing compares to the infamous trouble with the trolley eh? Since the reworked controls, the trolley missions felt much harder for me and the same goes for the ice hockey missions. Spyro moves a bit slower in these, so as you said, I had to let go of my muscle memory and learn to play again. And it was really annoying. That trolley mission was my fav as kid but now I don't think I want to give it any more time and thought than I have to.
    Whoa what a wall of text! Thanks for the review. I'm happy to tell you that I'm going to re-illustrate some of the Spyro characters, just to see what my fellow Spyro fans will say about my versions compared to the Reignited ones. Happy playing to all Spyro fans and I look forward seeing your thoughts about Spyro! 😎

    Beyond a few nitpicks like the changed monk chanting voice in the Tibetan style level in Spyro 2 (forgotten it's name), I agree, my main beef (albeit an understandable one) has been the load times compared to the original. I guess it's a sacrifice for top quality graphics.

    I did that trick jumping onto the crystal and then onto the platform with the flying power up on the first level in Spyro 2 in the remastered version. • @PirateFilms95
      @PirateFilms95 Před 5 lety +2

      @ThatOneRaven TfB have said this was a creative decision and not censorship but honestly given that school shootings are such a common thing these days and weren't back in 1998 I'm not that surprised that these things were changed. You gotta remember that things like Columbine, 9/11, Sandy Hook, the Boston Bombing, and other things have happened since the original games were released so it's harder for people to just accept there being that sort of content in a kids game, also I'm fairly sure that had they included guns even for just those small sections the ESRB would have rated the game T instead of E10 and made it harder for younger kids to get the game.

    • @PirateFilms95
      @PirateFilms95 Před 5 lety +2

      @ThatOneRaven No believe me I totally can see the hypocrisy within it, I'm just speaking about how I have perceived our current society in general, back in the 90's having a gun or something in a kids game/show/movie/whatever was totally acceptable but nowadays with all the controversy surrounding them and recent events I think it's just best for the sake of the developers to play it safe. Whether we agree with the decision or not let's be honest, had this game included guns in it there definitely would have been a group of parents/people protesting or calling out the game and then they've got a controversy on their hands. I think you and I are basically in agreement here overall.

    Yeah Gulp was harder because i think they reworked his projectile AI. They used to just track where you were going so you just needed to run in circles or charge around him while weaving. What i could gather was it randomizes the when the projectile stops tracking you if it stops tracking late it will land in front of you if it stops early is will land behind you and they vary to what degree they do this. This is managable when there is only 2 at a time but when he fires 4 in a row each with their own tracking properties you feel kind of help less.

Ripto's fight seemed tougher during the second part when I was trying to get the skill point, but other than that everything seemed about the same. One small thing I didn't like was that it seemed like the camera was closer to Spyro in the Reignited Trilogy than the original which made it harder to see certain enemies, especially in the water. But like you said, it wasn't game breaking and I thought they did an excellent job with it. I would really love to see a new Spyro game made similar to this style.

    I completed the trilogy (That's got everything) and loved it, but I did have a few issues:
    1. The frame rate is all over the place, I know it's 30fps, but I wish they could keep it solid 30.
    2. I had some odd control issues with hunters skating levels, particularly the skating section in the bonus end world. Sometimes Spyro will just spin to the left after tricks for no reason and multiple times I have been able to skate along a wall.
    3. The grass hides gems.
