Chef Niki Mckenzie, originally from New Zealand, arrived in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories with adventure in mind. Upon arrival to Yellowknife, Niki took inspiration from the foliage and incredible offerings the land has to offer and debuted at the Yellowknife Farmer’s Market as “Fish on the Bay”.
Her signature dish, the iconic “Fish Sausage” was inspired by the Pāua sausages her grandfather used to make. She wanted to create a unique and palatable food with fish that customers would love to eat.
In 2021, Fishy People Butchery took over their new location located overlooking the bay in Old Town. With a focus on promoting food security and sustainability in the North, the restaurant utilizes local ingredients in their dishes and works closely with the seasons.
Fishy People has quickly become a fan-favourite in Yellowknife. In the summer of 2021, they debuted Yellowknife’s first outdoor bar, the Garden where they serve delicious snacks and drinks overlooking the bay. Inside the newly renovated restaurant, customers can expect to find a plethora of delicious offerings, such as fresh and frozen fish products, scrumptious brunch dishes, hot and cold drinks and fresh, innovative meals made with the local catch of the day.
