I’ve been using cotton balls for a few years now. Great sound with no external muffling.

Sorry, so with the floor tom. about how much higher than the batter head was it? Can I also ask one thing. I struggle alot with getting kicks to sound good mic'd, mainly the outside mic. Any tips? The inside mic and the batter head Im usually happy with, but I never have any idea where to tune the reso in relationship to the batter. I usually use a d112 or Md421 inside pretty close (almost halfway in), and I use a LDC and a subkick on the reso, about 2-3" away. I think 1 issue is that Ive been tuning the reso to low(in general), so Im going to tune it higher next time, just not sure where to go in relation. I think Ive had a misconception in my head that if a reso(on any kick/tom) is tuned higher than the batter that I wont get a fat sound with good low end. Im starting to see that thats not the case, and if anything tuning the reso higher can actually give you more low end in some cases, I think haha... Thanks man.

You ever try using a tune bot or a tension tunner?

I’ve actually used both. They’re really great. I would use them to get your ear right. After that try to replicate without it.
