honestly i'm just happy that these exist. i was sad when they shut down the official game but like always, the fans are there to fix the problems companies create
Yes, I love it when players of an MMO that has been shut down band together and create a private server for the game so that other fans can play it again.
I just started playing again and I was a COH beta player. I've missed COH so much and tell everyone I know how awesome the costume creation was. I currently play on Homecoming and just started on Thunderspy. As a MM thunderspy is definitely the best for me. Being able to customize your minions is amazing. I just wish it wasn't so empty over there. Population count on Homecoming is great but I've forgotten so much about team play I'm intermediate about trying to join a team. Is there a server that has the old code for fire controllers? Just having 3 fire imps doesn't cut it after the grinding it took to have an army of imps.
Just wanted to thank you for this. CoH was one of the games my buddy and I would always go back to when we got bored with whatever new hotness was out. We were reminiscing about it today, which led me here. Gonna try Homecoming out.
Glade you found the video, you might want to. heck out some of my other videos. As some talk more indeepth on specific servers, and others talk about updates servers have done. Then there are some guides I have done that show you how to use uneak features a server has. Also this weekend Sept. 16th to 18th the Rebirth server is doing double xp and influence, plus that server is the one that keeps the closest to how the servers where before they shut down. Just with out the microtransactions in it.
Thanks for that video ! I was looking into scratching the nostalgia hitch, and couldn't figure out the servers. So I went homecoming, I'm fine with the basic powersets, and I want some people in my mmo.

I'm a Homecoming only guy, mostly for same reasons as you - I love Masterminds and while I'm slower to interact with other players (mostly due to bad past with WoW groups) the community on Homecoming is very strong, even if you're quite solitary someone will come to you and offer help - like if you ask how to beat a certain elite boss or something you'll get a message offering to help beat them etc.. I play on the Reunion server and have 320 alts ("do I have a problem?" "..no, it's the children who are wrong..")
Yeah the community on homecoming is good, however it's hard to tell how the other servers community's are as they are not as popular as homecoming. I do know that the developers on thunderspy and rebirth are very friendly and helpful. As they have messaged me many times about my videos. To either thank me or to correct me on something I have said. I think the reason I dont hear from homecoming is be ause they have a bigger community to deal with. Or a smaller team.
Homecoming only here -- bouncing back to Excelsior a little, but mostly on Everlasting. Too many of the other servers had no real population and you got artificially boosted. No population means no one is around to use the Auction house to buy your stuff or put stuff for you to buy, and that puts a damper on early fund creation and later crafting. Some of these servers resort to autoenhancing - good stopgap, but not a fix. I may not WANT a power enhanced the mannner of autoenhance does. City with no people isn't CoH.... Homecoming isn't QUITE as crowded as the original live system , but far far better than some of the ghost town servers out there, and still functions with few extras. Live players will enjoy all the changes. (No purchasing of auras, costume pieces, etc., Movement powers at lvl 4 with no prerequesite, No need to do aura or cape missions, and no worry about SG prestige, so kick-ass bases are common)
Everlasting is great for the role player, I see a lot more SG recruiting on Excelsior.
I agree with all but one of your points. There are other servers out there that do not auto-enhance or speed up your progression. Rebirth is one of those servers. You are right that there are some servers that do these things like Thunderspy. I do not see a problem with this as some people look for that type of thing as they don't have the time to put into the game like they use to.
Those are some very bare bones reasons to pick one server or the other, but they are effective. At the end of the day, it's all about the powers and customization, since the gameplay is pretty much the same. Mechanics from what I've seen online is something that change as well, like balancing and all that. Great video, underrated channel. You deserve more views
Thank you very much and I do agree that they all run on the same mechanics. Them main difference with them is if they keep to how City of Heroes was or if they add new stuff to it.

I liked the idea of We Have Cake, (now New Dawn) because of all the character customization, but for the life of me can't understand why there's no way to create an account that I could find. The home page gives a link, but the link is dead.
So, after several failed attempts at trying other servers, I stuck with Homecoming because it's never failed me..., yet.
I will have to check the links for New Dawn (We Have Cake).
Hi this looks very cool, i am downloading Homecoming from your link , once i have it all installed am i able to select the other servers of from it or do i need to download it again from each link , thanks for your video's.
No as Homecoming uses there own dedicated launcher. To access the other servers you will need one of the following launcher. Tequila, ice tea, or sun rise.
Rebirth also has a fair number of cool costume pieces. But it's a desert so far as playerbase, it seems.
It does have a lot of new costume parts. they were put in after this video and the review was done.
So not all the servers have the same content, interesting. I just installed COHH, and will be working on recreating characters I had all the way back in 2012. I suppose my most pressing question is: Which servers contain content from the time of official COH shutting down, including the expansions? Great vid btw, very informative.
The one server that keeps closest to the way the live servers where before they got shut down would be Rebirth. They kept everything the same including how you unlock costume parts you did not have to buy. They have added in some bug fixes and other things like the Guardian archetype and over 800 new costume customization options.
@@ControlledChaosGaming It's cool, though I've only ever seen a very small population on that server unfortunately. Homecoming here I come, no pun intended. The question now is, what shard?
@@Bob.Roberts for me I like it when I want to play a mastermind back before the pet bug got introduced. I personally don't like that they took out the generic enhancements for the first 10 levels but that is just me.
@@ControlledChaosGaming I like Masterminds as well. Back in the day, I played all of those available: first was Ninja, then Undead, then Bots, and finally Demons when the expansion came. Some of the highest tier players I had the pleasure of teaming with had some amazing MM builds, like, they could take on a few purple bosses at once and survive. I'm going to restart simple, however; first up is a Sentinel with Assault Rifle/Invulnerability, based off a (lesser known) Ghost in the Shell character. Next will be a Super Strength/Willpower Brute, based off a Mugen character I created a lonnnng time ago, lol.
edit: When I first started playing CoV (went villains before heroes), I made a lot of unique designs, as soon as Going Rogue came about, I started a bunch of characters based upon existing templates. I even had a very powerful Tifa Lockhart character, lol.
@@Bob.Roberts oh I love the ghost in the shell manga and anime, when you get that character made feel free to share them on my discord server in the city of heroes section. I would like to see how they look.
homecoming has the community and it seens like you can solo end game, but the costune pieces are not there like some other servers. To me the costumes are the strongest point. Kind of wish sentinels did a tiny bit more damage and used that Push the Limits ability someone on reddit described. Setinels are great though. I just wish the server has a lot more options. The boots alone are lacking for female players or people making female characters too.
True Homecoming has the list amount of costume options compared to some other servers.
Homecoming, it feels like the original CoH/CoV to me. I love the fixes and the server populations. The community is truly helpful and generally better than what the original live servers had! Just mho. :)
That is a good server, they have done a great job fixing bugs that when even on the live servers when they where up. I also like playing on that server. However if there is someone that is completely new to the game and never played when it was live. I also recamend Rebirth sever as they have not changed how you get enhancement. Where as both Homecoming and Thunderspy have.
Hi Controlled Chaos. How are these servers with incarnate powers? Like Homecoming lets you unlock them by playing any content, do any of the others allow for that? I figured it's be hard to put together a team to do the incarnate stuff on them.
Hi Tiger Knight that is a good question. I do not have a direct answer of how the other servers unlock them. But I do know they set up groups to run them on there discord servers. That is how they do them since they dont have the size of players that homecoming has.
@@ControlledChaosGaming Ty for such a prompt response. I wasn't expecting the answer in like minutes. I'd be interested in a video on that in the future since it looks like you are always looking for a good video idea. By the way Thunderspy sounds, I'd be surprised if they didn't have something like that OR other add ons as well. Plus being the smaller player population, it would make more sense for them than HC.
@Tiger Knight yeah I am a night owl and since my channel is small I can respond to comments quickly. As soon as I read your comment I was already planning a video about this subject. I am hopping to do it soon and it will be a bonus video one of these weeks after I do the research and get the video of it done. Its comments like yours that helps me make more content so thank you.
Rebirth veteran here. On our server, incarnate slots and powers are unlocked through playing incarnate trials, as well as running incarnate content in Dark Astoria. We host server-wide iTrials almost every night, though, so unlocking slots is usually pretty easy.

I am not sure witch server to play. I am looking for a server with great character customization and a decent amount of people online. Do you have any recommendations for me.
Homecoming has the biggest player base, Thunderspy added a few new 3D modeled costume parts, and Rebirth has added in a bit more than Thunderspy has for 3D modeled costume parts but hundreds of textures to the costume parts. So really it depends on what is more important to you? player base or costume customization.

Rebirth has the most costume customization, but Thunderspy is 2nd and has pet costume customization. So if you are just wanting more costume looks for just you then Rebirth is the server you want. If you use a lot of pets and want to customize the look of them you want Thunderspy.

i just started playing homecoming again but sadly im not getting a lot of teams i prefer being in teams
Homecoming may have the highest population, but that is mainly high level players. You could try some of the other servers where they have scheduled times for running teams. The two I know of are Thunderspy and Purrgatory. Both have increased the xp gain so you level faster. If you use discord and want to verbally chat the group when grouping I say go with Purrgatory as they are on Discord almost every night. Plus that server will automatically lvl up one of your characters to lvl 50. and give you influence so you can get enhancements for that toon.
Can CoH be downloaded and played on steam deck?
I have seen post of it being done, but I have no idea how to do it. Once I get a steam deck I will see how it can be done.
Thunderspy has the best masterminds changes and fixes. If the server wasn't so empty I would never play any other server at all.
I have to agree with you on the part about the changes as far as being able to edit your minions. However, I don't like the change they made to when you get minions. Also the simi fix they did for minions melee and ranged attacks, I wish would be like Homecomings fix which is a true fix to the minion's bug.
I never had my MM pets bug out on Thunderspy. They always worked on their correct job. Plus as a streamer. I do not suddenly want Homecoming to close off streaming for months at a time like they did in the past. I think I will stick with Thunderspy.
I really wish the Guardian was on Homecoming.

I've tested all servers and honestly in my opinion thunderspy has the most solid and rewarding progression and makes you want to play the game instead of staying in AE all day in a hurry to reach max level and skip all the rest of the game content!
I agree it's a great server for that and I do jump on Thunderspy when I don't have much time to level up a character idea I have.
Come home and there are almost no people playing there unfortunately and I have been looking for people for a long time for a permanent team to play with

BTW mostly play on homecoming, for things like the new classes and new power-sets as well as fixes to power sets. And because I have 3 friends from the original run of the game that I team with one night a week, and if we're on together otherwise
@@ChuckvdL If I had freinds that still played the game and were on just one server I would do the same as you. However none of them play anymore. For me that is some what of a good thing as it lets me jump around to the different servers to make more content for this channel.

City of Heroes was the first superhero MMO, it is what made DC decide to make DCUO. You should give CoH a try as all of the private servers are free to play on with no charges for anything.
an android version of the game would be interesting and I bet it would make the game popular again
Yes, that could work but I don't think NC Soft would do that. Heck ever a City of Heroes 2 would work but NC Soft is not interested in doing that or selling off the IP.
