The Gangs That Steal Your Puppies | Crimewave

- Since the lockdown puppy phenomenon pushed up the price of dogs by up to 450% in the UK, a huge increase in dog thefts and importations has followed.
With access to the minds behind the crimes and the people on the frontline trying to prevent them, we discover why illegal puppy farms have become one of the fastest growing illicit markets in Europe.
We gained access to a gang who explained how they grab dogs in parks and from people’s houses. Plus, we secured an interview with an illicit dog importation organisation who bring dogs into the UK from Eastern European puppy farms. They implant fake microchips before selling them on.
Finally, we learned about the fight back, meeting a victim who managed to steal her dog back and a pet detective who takes on these cases as her day job.

The fact that they remove microchips terrifies me. Get your dog an identity number tattoo (your vet can do it) as an extra precaution. It's small but noticeable to any new owners, relatively painless, and usually located on the inside of the ear, on the belly, or on the inside of the groin. You can get a tag on their collar to warn potential thieves that trying to disguise this particular dog might be more trouble than it's worth.
They will remove that, too. DNA registration seems like the only way.

As a puppy owner in Romania this is heartbreaking, and scary 💔 I couldn’t imagine anything like that happening to my bundle of joy. The solution is if you’re not buying it from a high quality breeder who will let you meet the mother, and the facility, and don’t have 20 different parents then don’t spend over 2k for a dog. Pure stupidity to buy a puppy mill dog that was stolen for the same price as a carefully selected purebred
My dog was stolen and was missing for 8 days. I was heartbroken, we had her for 11 years and she was part of the family, I grew up with her. The interviewer has good questions, thanks VICE for bringing the detail about this crime, I knew about some reasons for dogknapping but not all the reasons why.
It’s your duty as a potential new owner to ensure you’re not buying a stolen dog, there needs to be a national database where you can list your stolen dog, another thing is people need to take pictures of their dogs, you’d be amazed how many people don’t bother, the problem is how little questioning new owners ask, we all know how heartbreaking it would be to have your dog stolen so do your research, if it’s a puppy and the seller cannot show you them with mam and dad then don’t buy
Or adopt dogs that need a home like ones from the pound
This happened to my friend's dog this year when the dog got off his leash, the perpetrator had the dog's collar and claimed he had been hit by a car and killed. Months later the family who bought him illicitly saw my friend's missing dog posters and returned the dog to his rightful owners. Not everyone is so lucky.

ADOPT don’t shop! I used to work at an animal shelter and there are seriously so many amazing dogs that are there for years that deserve a good home. Don’t give the puppy mills and breeders any more money all they do is create more dogs that end up at shelters to get put down.

If you're looking for a new pet, please try to adopt. Adopt ugly dogs. Adopt lovely mutts. If you can afford it, adopt that loving little pup with a heart problem. You can save a life.
Exactly! There are so many street dogs rm Spain that need a home. We signed up with a foundation and all we asked was for a dog that could live in a big apartment (next to a park) and with a cat. They send us videos of him in the cat’s enclosure just laying down. And he’s been such a blessing. He was a little scared of our cat at first 😂 But I can even take him to other friends with cats because he is just so gentle and kind!
Sadly not as simple as that. The reason we adopt is cause there are a lot of dogs on the street that end up in shelters. So if your trying to fix the problem the solution is not to push the demand onto shelters that requires a continuous flow of dogs into shelters dogs from the street, but rather support legitimate breeders. I mean what are breeders even for if we gonna go straight to the shelters ( not to mention if demand drops prices go up ) so like I said it's really not that simple
Why isn't our government doing anything about this? It's disgusting. I welcome ANY legislation to stop this, the UK dog market is out of control
Adopt don't shop
they normally end up being the best dogs anyways
Some gangs that sell stolen puppies on to new homes, they’ll often ask for an address from their customers too during the sale process. So they’re likely going to be stolen back from the new owners soon after...
So dispicable.
Exactly. Why not just adopt or go to a breeder?
@@Goldenxbih that's the point they pose as breeders to sell em as one of them said
Rescue
@@navichu3546 They don't have any more puppies. If they get one in, it will be gone in minutes since they have long waiting lists. Try to call a animal shelter yourself and ask for a puppie or young dog, if you live in England or north europe where this problem is growing.
i'd really prefer being broke than taking aways people's happiness for money
Odds favor them choosing the wrong owner sooner than later, they wont be around for long.
I can't imagine how heartbroken I'd be... seeing that video of Echo made me cry... people need to adopt first, stop the demand for these dogs to begin with.
This should have been a sting operation by Vice. These guys should be in jail!
Other groups like this wouldn’t trust them for future interviews if they had a reputation for ratting them out. The cops get a lot of info out of truthful interviews like this though
Clearly this was fake lol
@@nuttr2611 I dont think so, looks real enough...
@@Drippeh you can’t. Their job is exposure. You lose other chances to speak to other groups if they think you are gonna run to the cops with the info or sting
@Andrew Lucks burner account ok bot
This unfortunately happened to me 4 years ago with my 2 year old beagle named Doug the dog who is my best friend. Thankfully I saw the two masked men while they were in action and I was able to follow them in my car for 6 miles until they finally stopped and gave up. But it was too little too late for the dognappers, they stole my dog so I stole their lives 😀😀😀
yeah sure u killed 2 ppl mr “quackquackimaduck”
@@tec-9672 pull up to the pond puss in boots
The sad thing is within a year a majority of these dogs will end up in shelters due to owners not having enough time for them. It has already happened in my area and its getting worse as the pandemic "slows" down and people are getting back to office work.
“I want to know why people are stealing these dogs” *petting a $4k dog*
Yes! Most people seem to not want to see this.
Me a Chad: Pets an 8k dog 🧐
Lol right
Wow hardly life changing money 4k a time.
@@slicksix8892 I assume you are being sarcastic
If this happened to my pup, it would be an episode of saw. I would not rest
They're street gangs mate and probably carry, they'd pop you without a second thought, chip your dog then let the police chase them down.
@@Luton-Mick F it, I'd be on my way to the police station or the hospital. They wouldnt try to steal my 30kg german sheppard anyway ;)
The way I’d claw their eyes out if they stole my dog
This makes me so sad for the owners and the dogs 😢
“To me she’s just a money thing”
Flipping disgusting. Those poor babies miss their families.
Kids get kindapped too.
Anything that can be bought and sold can be stolen too . We are lucky our faces can't be stolen and transplanted ,or they would stole our faces too.
You vegan?
I know. Imagine being so stupid that you can only steal other people’s dogs for a living.
They will get new family. Love is love
They are not "babies" they are dogs lmao.
Thank you vice for making me disappointed at humanity this morning

No one wants heelers anymore, not even cattle farmers.
When people try to justify doing bad things for the money it makes it even more deplorable.
That excuse of 'times are hard' was pathetic. Times are hard for a lot of people. These people just can't be bothered to get a proper job.

Yeah no. These dogs are so cute and should NEVER have been put through that, if i stole the dog (we could together yk 😉) then we would put him in a good home and not hurt him or breed from him
Boy, look at the diversity in these groups of thieves. I love our biggest strength 😍😍😍!

she did an impressive job in her questioning during the interviews. i'd like to see more stories she's covering.

He couldn't carry on because he felt the interviewer was scolding him and that made him upset
If someone stole my dog, I’d make John Wick look like a kids movie
