  • Almost two decades before cell phone video cameras came into widespread use, the violent actions of N.Y.P.D. officers during the Tompkins Square Park riot in 1988 were caught on a hand-held video camera by local Lower East Side resident and artist Clayton Patterson (@claytonles). In this episode of I Was There, Clayton recounts the wild and free era of the L.E.S. in the 80s and the events that led up to the riot and its aftermath, which included the indictment of several police officers and a jail sentence for Clayton for refusing to turn over his footage to authorities.
Featuring Excerpts From the Film “CAPTURED” (2008) provided by Clayton Patterson, Elsa Rensaa, Daniel B. Levin, and Ben Solomon. www.capturedmovie.com

Subtitles please... Youre a major news and video company. You cant pay to have subtitles??? For a company like yours it should be a given that your videos are uploaded with subtitles. Small independent youtubers pay, or use volunteers, to get subtitles up fast. Why can you? This video is almost a month old. Subtitles shouldn't have to be begged for.

If he was to move out he would lose the rent control and have to pay full market value for rent … he got on the rent control list 4-5 years before he actually got one in late 80s and at some point they grandfathered that program in … ppl like him were guaranteed rent control at same price or increase limited to like a couple percent per year max back then and as long as they don’t break the rental agreement or move out willingly, they cannot be kicked out or have their rent increased. Same building in mill basin guys are paying 2250 for the shoebox 1 bed and his is a full size 2 bed … steal !! He won’t even risk sub letting cause it breaks the contract …

To say that your art tangibly helped others after being abused by the very people who swore to protect them is just incredible. Its obvious that this man has gone through a lot and he's openly said he has trauma that no therapist can understand so everyone who lives there and has been helped by him go make a concerted effort to help him because he deserves it.

@Dr Will Kutchurkokov yes and they're are tons of mechanisms in place to protect those cops and go after the liars. But as you say, they're are two sides to every story, and a lot of cops lie, and far more look the other way when they're colleagues lie. There are not nearly as effective mechanisms in place to protect the victims of police misconduct and prosecute the police. For example, a recent study on exonerated people wrongly convicted of murder found that about half were victims of police perjury, and the police were punished (let alone prosecuted) only like 10% of the time. And that took an outside group to help them, the government refuses to. Prosecuting police for blatant misconduct is only now becoming commonplace, and they hate it and whine about it and send out siccophants to pointlessly bring up how sometime people do bad things to police, too.

JFC, that part about PTSD...I was at standing rock back in 2016 and the level of state violence we experienced was truly disturbing. After I returned home from camp I spend a solid year and a half trying (and failing) to manage my PTSD. When I finally came back into my mind enough to start looking for outside help, there was absolutely nowhere to turn. In fact, just seeing the soldiers in their military uniforms on the PTSD therapy websites was enough to retrigger my nervous system (the national guard also assaulted us out there). I ended up losing everything, my home, my pets, everything I owned, even my mind for awhile there. There really needs to be some type of anticapitalist/anticolonialist trauma informed therapy!

Being bad and terrible while being a cop, doesn’t even get the cop verbal punishment. Big difference between what was going on back then and what’s happening in NYC and in other places today. Oppressed people don’t commit rape with impunity. Victims don’t randomly slash open strangers faces with knives and box cutters. People who are living in fear don’t pull guns and spray bullets with no regard for where those bullets are going or who they might hit. Armed robbery isn’t a byproduct of living in terror. I was a little kid in the 80’s. I have friends from all backgrounds and I’ve seen how the attitude on the streets have changed. What’s happening now is people are taking advantage of liberal talking points. They are using victim hood as an excuse to commit violent crime. NYC is the real victim. It’s been raped and left for dead by communists like Bill Deblasio (real name Warren Wilhelm/look it up.) Until people start accepting responsibility for their actions NYC and America will continue down a spiral straight to hell. I can only hope people wake up.
