My mother was diagnosed with diabetes 18 months before she was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. I wish more doctors knew the correlation and were thorough enough to test because she could have had treatment earlier

This is the most informative presentation on Pancreatic I have seen. I am BRCA11 positive, and my brother died of pancreatic cancer at 57. I am now 65 and want to do everything I can to be on the lookout for early detection of this disease. Thank you so much for your work Doctor.

I had an aunt who died from breast cancer, my father and uncle died from Pancreatic cancer and another uncle died from lung cancer. I keep up on Pancreatic cancer for some reason. Even though I know that PAN CAN is rarely genetically passed on. This is wonderful information, I am going to sign up for the UCLA screening program for PAN cancer since I have two 1st degree relatives who died of Pancreatic cancer.

For those wondering about risk factors and family history, current guidelines recommend that healthy individuals from Familial Pancreatic Cancer (FPC) families should consider pancreatic cancer screening beginning at age 50, or 10 years younger than the earliest pancreatic cancer diagnosis in the family, if at least 1 of the pancreatic cancers in their family was in a first-degree relative.
My father had pancreatic cancer and doctors at that time mentioned being exposed to chemicals was a risk. My father was a mechanic.

@Barbara Grimes Barbara - Our recent symposium covered two topics that may be of interest based on your question - Personalized Medicine and Tumor Testing as well as Why Should I See A Genetic Counselor? You will learn about the patient, who should have his/her tumor tested to help determine the best treatment and that relatives of pancreatic cancer patients can get genetic testing to determine if there are any germline mutations that have been inherited. Remember, this disease is rare and only about 5 to 10% of cases are considered to be hereditary or familial. pancreatic.org/patients-caregivers/symposium/
@@HirshbergFoundation I had genetic testing done and found zero link genetically. My case is a fluke. All the main possible"causes" I had none. NON smoker not male.... Caught early. Staged II-B. Surgery removed the tumor in the tail of my pancreas and they also removed my spleen. Now having chemo. Folfirinox and 5-FU. Completed 3 out of 12 infusions.

@@HirshbergFoundation update for you . I have 2 more chemo sessions left. Last one will be Sept 29. October 5th i have a CT to determine if the nodes in my lungs have changed. I have had a few setbacks which is why I am not finished. Low ANC three weeks in a row. Can't worry about what cannot be changed! Side effects not too bad worst is being so tired and some neuropathy in my fingers and toes.

How about looking for some part of the malignant cells or a DNA particle in the pancreatic secretions collected through endoscopy or any other means ?
