Watching this at the Cinema as a 10 year old Boy in 1978 I thought that Car was the most amazing thing I had ever seen. And when it was driven out of the Sea, I nearly passed out. Brilliant.
@@ammarisrar2005 that's close enuff. Giorgetto & MARCELLO GANDINI from BERTONE created amazing designs for MASERATI, LAMBORGHINI, ALFA ROMEO, BUGATTI & countless other car makers.
According to John Glen (second-unit director of this film), Roger Moore came up with that; he had the idea that dropping a fish would be funny and just did it. It made no sense, but they went with it - for the fun.
I preferred the more "down to earth" Bond Roger Moore films like Octopussy and For Your Eyes Only. But this one is his best "taking down the evil organization in some obscure and distant base of operations" bond film.
This scene is definitely one of the reasons this movie is held in such high regard among the Bond films. Starts with a motorcycle with a torpedo sidecar. Then Jaws comes off a side street in a car. Once Bond has dispatched them, then suddenly there’s Caroline Munro in the chopper (that scene where the chopper comes up alongside Bond is just goosebumps every time). And apparently Munro is one hell of a pilot to pull off some of those turns (and get in front of Bond!) Then juuuust when you think Bond’s gonna pull some tricky car move or pull into a tunnel, it’s “Can you swim?” Car turns into a freakin’ submarine and takes out the chopper only to THEN get attacked by frogmen AND a small submersible of their own. I love the way Anya hits the depth charge button at the end too. The scene definitely earned the fish gag at the end of an 8 minute rollercoaster.
It’s a tour de force, in my favorite Bond film. but Stromberg must be the least efficient Bond villain. 😂 he wastes a Kawasaki, a sidecar missile drone, an Alfa Romeo, a Jet Ranger, 5 henchmen, 2 frogmen, a submersible, and a ridiculously hot fEmme fatale in his pursuit. 😅 then again, Jaws is worth every penny as a henchman. 😁
And to think Stromberg could just pressed a single button to dispatch Bond when he was on his island. That's why I find the Italian gangster and spaghetti westerns films far superior. But who cares its entertainment eh! 😊
Coming out of the water with the windshield wiper on and dropping the fish out the window. That sums up the humor of the Roger Moore Bond pictures. Loved them.
Its the way the motorcyclist loses it that just kills me every time. After being such a covert tough guy only to wind up looking like a Keystone cop unable to control his bike and roaring off a cliff pasted with feathers. What an epic fail. What an idiot. The Wile Coyote fall is just perfect. Wait for it!!
John K I love how they take regular cars that nobody really knows about and turn them into badass movie cars, I bet nobody knew what a 1970 Lotus Esprit was before this movie. Same with the Delorean from back to the future, that car was on the market from 1981-1983 and ever sense they used it in the 1985 back to the future film everybody wants one now. So DMC is actually bringing deloreans back this year.
Yes, it is. I really love it. I was seven years old when I saw Roger Moore presenting this trailer in a german tv-show and I desperately wanted to see the movie but was way too young. It was my first contact with a Bond movie and since then I am a fan 😉
Timelessly impressive - no CGI, all real things captured on real film, stunts done for real, no cut and shut editing, style, charisma, something other worldly - just an amazing film.
Classy how the car goes crashing into the roof of the house and you think everyone is dead inside and then jaws comes out the front door brushing his suit and just walks away casually lmao.
What? I didn't Know. Connery was my Father's Bond, But I got stuck with Sir Roger Moore. And I do not regret it. Moonraker and The Spy Who Loved Me Changed My Life.
Started watching him when l was 7 he had a show called lVANHO not sure about the spelling...then he went to do the SAINT, loved the show...he had a distinct voice , distinct hair cut and most of all a distinct style ....he was a good looking chap in all his movies!
@@rogerkincaid931 Yep, couldn't agree with you Moore! LOL He's my favorite Bond of them all. No disrespect to all you Sean Connery and Daniel Craig fans - but Roger had that special charisma about him that made him very special to me. Call it a man crush or whatever but he was the best. RIP Moore and Connery.
Stromberg: We need a new helicopter pilot HR: We have two candidates. First candidate Bob: I have 25 years flight experience Stromberg: We'll let you know. Next candidate please Caroline Munroe: I can push buttons Stromberg: Welcome aboard
I was an 11 year old kid when this came out and I thought this chase scene with the Esprit S1 was the best thing ever. The action and exotic locations, along with the atmospheric Hamlisch music score were so intoxicating! And Ms Munro stirred feelings I’d never quite known before ...
I challenge anyone to find a more entertaining series of films from this era of bond just for sheer fun....does anyone know how good these films actually were without trying?
The shots of the helicopter popping up beside the Lotus on the road, and the one where the Lotus goes into the water with the helicopter alongside are pure cinematic gold!
@@myalfie exactly, believe me the worlds way changed after Irans 1979 revolution, the shah gone. Democrats Owned the World. And Islamic Gray days starts to the Middle East and Then to world. Tnx my friend
Actually the world (or at least, the UK) wasn't a particularly happy place in the 1970s (oil crisis, inflation, industrial unrest - not too different to today!). Maybe that's why the Bond producers decided to make cheerful films!
Also, some people don't give him credit as a ruthless Bond too. Each Bond kills villains, but in this, he just frankly shoots Strohmberg assassin style after he dodges the harpoon. There was the guy in the car he kicked off the ledge in For Your Eyes Only, and in Moonraker, he sent Drax out into space to die a horrible death.
3:31 I love how even when the assassin was trying to kill Bond, he still offered his gentle smile like a gentleman. Something unique from all other spies.
Classic Bond, to me Roger Moore was the best, suave, typically English, funny, tongue in cheek but serious when needed to be. This scene sums up what Bond is all about, the latest films with Daniel Craig just don't have that quint essential 007.
Well said and absolutely agree. He was the best. His versatility was second to none. Today its all blood, guts and doom to pull the ticket sales in. The latest bond movies were hideous to say the least. Far to much time spent on anger with no realistic plots or characters, The music as well compared to the old ones was not as good. Latest bond had potential but lost the plot with exasperated scenes of blood and gore, Which for me totally detracted from all that 007 films are capable of. Moore was a classic example of a secret agent using his skill and cunning instead of just bullets and bullshit.
I think people tend to look back on past Bond eras with rose-tinted glasses (myself included). Yes this clip is great and stands the test of time very well, but even Roger's era was all-often criticised by many at the time for going too far into parody. This sort of approach wouldn't work as well with modern audiences. It's too dated and "of its time". They tried it to a degree with Spectre and it felt hoakey. Craig's films have a lot of good in them though. I grew up with the Brosnan films but its fair to say that they haven't aged particularly well and Craig's films are something of an improvement in terms of acting and production.
02:25 forward vision is obscured Driver: "Best course of action will be to keep my right foot buried into the carpet and swerve from side to side like a loon"
The best car chase action segment in any movie from start to finish ever!! Bond movie or otherwise. Great action, cool tech, one liners, and coming back on land to finish lol! So epic to this day!!
Saw this as a small kid with my cousin and our Grandad. We both went crazy for that car and begged him for a model of it. We both got the Corgi one with the little missiles and fins. Spent many happy hours in the bath recreating this scene :) the movie is still one of my faves.Sean Connery and Roger Moore still have it and they're not even here anymore :( Daniel Who?
Sir Roger Moore is still to this day my favorite Bond. He was so always so non-chalant and complacent about shit. Never took himself too seriously. The best simple fist fights too, none of that MMA/Krav Maga fancy pants bullshit
The dead fish at the end was Roger's idea. He thought it'd be funny. It makes no sense, of course, but I'm glad they went with it - it concludes the scene on a humorous note.
@Henry Limpet The interesting thing about Bond back then was it was really very British, the humor, the understatement. I think this is what the English have always been about, Bond after the mid 80s lost the plot.
@@watershed44 The more fun Bond would have killed the series if it kept going on. I love Roger Moore's early Bond films but it started to get stale. The Living Daylights is great imo
Memories hats off to all the old bond.movies til Pierce brosnan Really miss them till 2003.After that never felt like bond with Daniel Craig. No time to die bad disappointment.RIP James.....
Damn... The girl in the helicopter was pretty hot, to bad she had to go? The best Bond and the coolest movies ever, the new 007 is kind of cool but none can or could beat Roger Moore as James Bond.
Useless trivia moment: The dude on the beach (8:27) was actually an Italian director featured in the movie as an extra. He was in Moonraker & For Your Eyes Only too & does the exact same thing (looks at his wine bottle) in each movie whenever he see's Bond doing something incredible.
TexasRocks HillCounrty You really have to love the way they also slyly included some humorous moments into this chase. Like right at the beginning when of all the trucks on the road Bond could've gotten stuck behind while being chased by the missile firing motorcycle was of all things a mattress delivery truck.
This is the ultimate bond formula, cool car, beautiful woman, exotic locations and escapism, great villains and henchmen and the over the top plot of world domination. Wish the new ones stuck to this and not the personal storylines and seeing bond getting a kid and dying, they have messed up everything after Casino Royale.
First Bond film I saw at the cinema, amazing and still is, a school friends Dad was security driver who drove the model of the Lotus to the set at Pinewood unreal
@roquefortfiles Agreed. Colin Chapman's baby was this Esprit. This thing was a real sports car and one of the best handling cars during the late 70s when it debuted. Also one of the lightest too. Plus I always liked the sharp, crisp design of the original!

This was the car I wanted as a kid, even without the weapons systems. The other Bond cars were cool, but this one, it was iconic, and stuck with me.
I think it's late to answer but I got it at hotwheels
Its available in GTA V
I love it too
I have the model made by Corgi in my hand while I write these lines.
The best Bond movie of the 70’s.
And apparently Munro is one hell of a pilot to pull off some of those turns (and get in front of Bond!)
Then juuuust when you think Bond’s gonna pull some tricky car move or pull into a tunnel, it’s “Can you swim?” Car turns into a freakin’ submarine and takes out the chopper only to THEN get attacked by frogmen AND a small submersible of their own.
The video shots, the decent action, the plot and the music. This one was really finessed.
And to think Stromberg could just pressed a single button to dispatch Bond when he was on his island. That's why I find the Italian gangster and spaghetti westerns films far superior. But who cares its entertainment eh! 😊
@@ahassen1236 the HQs would then track the trace and order Royal Navy and Soviet Navy to sink Atlantis, without knowing Stormberg's real plan

Coming out of the water with the windshield wiper on and dropping the fish out the window.
That sums up the humor of the Roger Moore Bond pictures.
Loved them.

All those feathers and he still can't fly
Great oneliner 😂
Its the way the motorcyclist loses it that just kills me every time. After being such a covert tough guy only to wind up looking like a Keystone cop unable to control his bike and roaring off a cliff pasted with feathers. What an epic fail. What an idiot. The Wile Coyote fall is just perfect. Wait for it!!
that line make me laugh so hard
One liners before the guy hit the ground
Yep. Too Bad for him James
I love the way they had guys hiding in the ocean, just in case bond had a submarine car.
Man, you *CRACK ME UP!*
I love how they had had four goons in a Mk IV Cortina chasing a Lotus Esprit Turbo
...as a backup in case the sidecar bomb failed, obviously
Gary Masters the guys are hiding in the ocean because of course the submarine car will have water launched anti helicopter missiles
The best bond and the best bond car ever!! RIP Roger!
Man that song during the underwater part is catchy as hell.
Yes, it is. I really love it. I was seven years old when I saw Roger Moore presenting this trailer in a german tv-show and I desperately wanted to see the movie but was way too young. It was my first contact with a Bond movie and since then I am a fan 😉
The song is Bond 77, from the soundtrack. One of very few Bond movie soundtracks still available on iTunes.
Very disco-esc

Interestingly the little boy who points at the lotus coming out the water is Richard Kiel’s (aka jaws) own son
Timelessly impressive - no CGI, all real things captured on real film, stunts done for real, no cut and shut editing, style, charisma, something other worldly - just an amazing film.
What? Atlantis is real?
"for real".
Sure, with how many different versions of the car for the different stages?
Classy how the car goes crashing into the roof of the house and you think everyone is dead inside and then jaws comes out the front door brushing his suit and just walks away casually lmao.
@The voice of reason
Jaws the man is a legend. He was hilarious too.
Did he just walk away like nothing happened? Yeah I'm correct
And while Jaws is a killer, he's not a psychopath, he leaves the unlucky homeowner be.

This was the moment Moore truly became Bond, and owned it.
R.I.P. Sir Roger, you were effortlessly awesome.

Hilarious! Back when 007 was as much a comedy as an action show.
These old Bond films had class and style-unlike the present ones-Barbara Bach was beautiful in this movie!
3:31 .. What a shot … one of the best looking cars ever made.
Sir Roger Moore the best Bond ever !
One of the best car chases in Bond history. Well choreographed with just the right amount of gadgets and cheesy humor.
The cheesy humor is all Roger Moore! That why he was one of my favorites!
Adjusted for inflation, the Sir Roger Moore era of Bond made the most amount of money of any of the Bonds.
The shots of the helicopter popping up beside the Lotus on the road, and the one where the Lotus goes into the water with the helicopter alongside are pure cinematic gold!
What I can't understand is why the girl was scared shitless when Bond drove off the pier, when she knew exactly what the car was capable of?
That Lotus sounds fantastic!

Actually the world (or at least, the UK) wasn't a particularly happy place in the 1970s (oil crisis, inflation, industrial unrest - not too different to today!). Maybe that's why the Bond producers decided to make cheerful films!

Tough to pick between this and Goldfinger.
1:09 when the chase sequence music kicks in. Movie epicness was achieved right there.
The best ,coolest Bond with the best scene of any Bond film, holds up well today.
Something unique from all other spies.
damn! when that music kicks in you knew you were in for a treat of awsomness.
My childhood dream. That car simply looks awesome just in plain white 👌
Maybe the best Bond scene ever….
Moore was a classic example of a secret agent using his skill and cunning instead of just bullets and bullshit.
what about Sean Connery?
I think people tend to look back on past Bond eras with rose-tinted glasses (myself included). Yes this clip is great and stands the test of time very well, but even Roger's era was all-often criticised by many at the time for going too far into parody.
This sort of approach wouldn't work as well with modern audiences. It's too dated and "of its time". They tried it to a degree with Spectre and it felt hoakey. Craig's films have a lot of good in them though. I grew up with the Brosnan films but its fair to say that they haven't aged particularly well and Craig's films are something of an improvement in terms of acting and production.
Stephen Bain if you had any knowledge about Bond movies you would know why people are looking back with rose tinted glasses as you said.
Sean Connery without question! Moore was good, but not the best

The dead fish at the end was Roger's idea. He thought it'd be funny. It makes no sense, of course, but I'm glad they went with it - it concludes the scene on a humorous note.

The interesting thing about Bond back then was it was really very British, the humor, the understatement. I think this is what the English have always been about, Bond after the mid 80s lost the plot.
