    I was stunned just like you were when i first watched this song back in 2007. Absolutely fantastic song, I contemplated on putting a £1000 bet on it to win the contest, because I was so certain it was going to win. I wished I had. Best Eurovision song of all time. After it won I learnt the whole song and sang it in word perfect Serbian. I still know the song off by heart to this day. The song was so good that Serbia will never be able to reproduce that sort of performance again. Over the period from 1999 to 2016 Molitva was the only song to win that didn't contain any English lyrics. So to do that it has to be a damn good song.

    That song is all about top quality. Lyrics, music, arangement, stage presence, backing vocals and above all, her amazing voice. And, that's it. That's why it won the competition. European contest gradualy slipped into burlesque, cabaret and theatrical concept, so songs with weaker lyrics, arangement and singing had the chance of even winning. Compared to it, since this is, after all a singing contest, this song is "stripped" of acting, fancy costumes, many members of entourage and visual show. Focus was on the essential ingredients. That is why it is well worth it. Love your reaction and passion for music. Come to Serbia, for no reason. God bless you.

    This was quite a wonderful surprise for me seeing this, Jordan. So glad you critiqued and shared it. This song and Marjia's voice are both a masterpiece and will defie the ravages of time. She has gotten even better and when she hits those notes at 5:00 (the bridge) and I still get goosebumps after all these years, for I was lucky enough to be living in Belgrade when she won the contest in 2007, and since my flat was just three blocks from the mayor's residence, I was also able to witness her singing the winning song on his balcony after her hero's welcome home. It is a memory I will never forget.
    Regarding your question about the pushback of the song due to its message, I didn't hear anything negative about the song, but I did about Marjia as LBGT was not looked upon kindly there at all, and gay parades have been cancelled and/or have had violence/ hooliganism for decades. However, today people seem to be more tolerant as long as it's "not in your face" behavior from my perspective.
    Here are the lyrics translated which to me are sort of nebulous:
    "Prayer"
    I can't get any sleep
    Empty sheets chase the sleep away
    And life is melting
    And disappearing fast
    In a split second

    As if I'm losing my mind
    Because I don't notice reality
    I'm still kissing you
    I still trust you blindly.

    Like I'm insane, I don't know where to go
    I'm afraid of a new love
    And days, open wounds
    I don't count them anymore.

    The prayer is like ember on my lips
    The prayer, instead of words - just your name.
    (And) Heaven knows, like me, how many times I've repeated it
    Heaven knows, just like me,
    That your name is my only prayer.

    I can't lie to God while I'm praying,
    But I would be lying if I said I didn't love you
    lyricstranslate.com/en/molitva-prayer.html-10
    PS Hope you do get to Serbia, but to me it's not the same, for since 2015 the country has been slowly "sold out" to foreign buyers/influence, and it lost its quaintness, historic feel, and almost innocence.

That being said, it is true that 2007 was some what different time than 2020 but Marija Šerifović has one of the best voices in Serbia so nobody really minded she's a lesbian even back then :) First she won Beovizija ( national selection ) and after that she won Eurovision she was considerate national hero :)

      Komentariram In what universe is Serbia openly gay? The PM is a lesbian, true. But she was put there tendentiously by the current horrible government in order to pull the wool over the eyes of EU and show that theoretically, they support gay rights. But that’s just it. A theory. Nothing’s been done in favour of anything LGBTQ there other than the anti-discrimination law which had to be passed forcefully and against the severely homophobic establishment. Civil unions are illegal, let alone anything more than that. The PM herself lives with her partner without having their union recognised by the government she represents?! And they even have a child, which legally is not hers as she was not the one who got pregnant, and without the legislation, she is nothing to the kid, and should something happen to her biological mother, the PM wouldn’t have any rights as a mother whatsoever! It’s crazy to say that Serbia is openly gay! Even the PM isn’t interested in doing anything to change that and/or perhaps the president doesn’t want to succumb to the will of the oppressed. It is true that there are a lot of gay people there. But there are as many anywhere. That doesn’t mean their voice can be heard anywhere freely. It was only recently that the Pride started happening annually there and even then under severe police protection. Before that the gay community was violently attacked, beaten up, stoned, etc. in broad daylight just because they want to have the same rights as everyone else there. So yeah, it is a very beautiful country where, unfortunately, you can be safe as a gay person as long as you do not show/say/behave in any standoutish way, as you run the risk of being a homophobic target. That is the sad truth and it will still take years before something changes for the better and definitely not under the current extremely corrupt and radical right-wing government.

    • @ImStevan
      @ImStevan Před 4 lety +8

      Dude, this comment is seriously misleading. There has been no progress concerning LGBT rights since 2012. The law against hate speech is not enforced. From the 11 attacks on the LGBT center in Belgrade, not a single time were the perpetrators found. People are thrown out of their homes by their parents if they find out they are gay. People think that being gay is a disease. Conversion therapy isn't illegal. Pride parades are met with protesters every year. There are political parties openly opposing LGBT rights. Marija Šerifović never reveals any of her relationships because she knows people will be angry at her for being gay. Everybody knows that she is gay but they don't attack her because she is never gay in public. Gay people need to hide in Serbia to feel safe. Now, you were saying?

    This is classed officially as the first time a country won with their first entry, technically it's not, this is Serbia's 4th incarnation at ESC. From 1961 to 1991 they were part of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia it was 1974 before a Serbian song was chosen to represent them (progressive rock band Korni). As the Yugoslavian Republics declared indepenance only the region now known as Serbia and Montengro took part in 1992 as Federal Republic of Yugoslavia with Serbian Extra Nena going to Eurovision. Due to international sanctions it took till 2004 for them to return as Serbia and Montengro with Serbian Zeljko Joksimovic finishing 2nd and finally this year Serbia took part on its own after Montenegro broke away the previous year.
    With this in mind no country has won with their debut entry, in 1956 each country had two entries, it was Switzerlands second performance that won.

    • @milancelisac
      @milancelisac Před 4 lety +4

      Michael Aries It is classed as the first time a country won with their debut entry because it is so. In 2007, Serbia entered for the first time as an independent country. All the previous ones you correctly enumerated were either Yugoslav or Serbia & Montenegro entries, and had any of those won, it wouldn’t have been a Serbian victory, but rather the one by either Yugoslavia or Serbia & Montenegro. However, the way you perceive it depends upon how you see the entries: if by Serbia you mean a contestant of Serbian descent, then you’re quite right. On the other hand, that’s not how it should be understood. If an artist represents, say, Yugoslavia, and it wins, as was the case of Riva in 1989, the winning country is Yugoslavia and not Croatia (which is where the band comes from). That was a Yugoslav win. Full stop. As well as, for example, Celine Dion in 1988. Should I conclude that technically France or Canada (LOL) won that year due to her nationality? I don’t think so. At the end of the day, the winner is the country represented by the artist. Whether they come from the country they represent or elsewhere is irrelevant.

    • @michaelaries4707
      @michaelaries4707 Před 4 lety +1

      I fully appreciate your comments. I did start by saying 'officially'
      When Yugoslavia was taking part in ESC it held an annual contset called Jugovizija, where each constituent republic (Bosnia and Hertegovina,Croatia, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia and Slovenia as well as autonomous provinces of Kosovo and Vojvodina both in Serbia) submitted individual entries, Slovenia won the first two with Montenegro the only Republic not to win. Yugoslavia did not became recognised as a union of states until 1918 and as yuo know broke up in the wake of the Balkan wars. Therefore Serbia like the other republics were always in exsistance and fully recognised as such inside the Yugoslav Union. Using that argument the individual regions who won the Yugoslavian National Competition legitimately could add these to their tally of Eurovision Entries. Similarly coutries who did not reach the final when prequalification rounds were used in 1993 and 1996 should be recognised as entries for that country since they followed the procedure to chose and submit an entry so Germany has taken part in every contest including 1996.
      Your right it is a matter of perception but I would argue that since Serbia submitted an entry to all the Yugoslav national song contests and were recognised by that name then they should be seen as an existing state and not a brand new country as EBU see it.

    What thrilled me about this performance, and this victory, is that ESC is all too soon seen as gay men friendly... Gay women still, to this day in 2020, have an invisibilty. My gosh, bring it on. hey! like Sister Sledge said, we are family

    You should listen Molitva as an instrumental. It is great as an alarm because music is building up through out song. It sounds more powerful.

    You should play video with subtitles. When Dana International won Eurovision as a transexual a lot of countries started to send gay singers. Previous years a lot of bit up songs won and that year Serbia send ballad while others send all beat up songs. You should check Serbia 2004, it took second place.
