AirPod Pro's falling out of your ears? Try this free solution!

  • The original AirPods fit me well and didn't fall out, audio quality was fine, too. Always interested in improving the status quo, when I learned about AirPods Pro I was attracted to the advanced features and potential sound quality improvement. The typical foam ear tips found on many earbuds irritate my skin; AirPods Pro feature a non-foam soft tip to seal out external noise and retain each AirPod in one's ear canal. Some AirPod Pro users have reported their AirPod Pros don't fit securely and at times fall out. I experienced this myself and looked for a solution. Aftermarket foam tips or accessory attachable retainers work well for some, however I didn't want to modify the comfort level and wearability of my AirPod Pros. This morning I had a thought to slightly rotate each earpiece upward once fitted into my ear canal. Just, and let me emphasize just, enough so the extended microphone portion rested against the Tragus of my ear. This slight rotation caused a friction fit of each earpiece, allowing the Pros to be retained in my ear not only by the soft cup at the end of the AirPod but also enhance the friction fit by using the Tragus portion of my ear to ever so slightly wedge the extended microphone against the Tragus which then slightly compressed the ear cup inside my ear canal for a friction fit. Give it a try, it's working well for me!

A good part of the time dedicated to training salespeople to "sell" the correct way. Every product is perfect for some and not right for others. Such a simple solution to an irritating problem! I had my earpieces work their way out while walking or eating but more drastically while on road biking activities... a scary and potentially expensive experience!! I even invested in silicone "ear hangers" to solve the problem but this works like magic. I should have realized that the "ear hangers" forced the AirPod Pros into the position you described and I thought that this was odd - but they’ve stayed in much better. Thanx Bill, for providing this wisdom to the rest of us frustrated people... (I wish Apple added this advice in their instructions .🥴 )

How nice, you seem like a genuinely good guy. Very unassuming. I’m about to buy a pair of AirPods Pro today and I’m thinking about buying the item that connects to them and goes around the neck in case they fall out. I’m planning on using them on my motorcycle with a helmet on, so they probably wouldn’t get past the helmet anyhow.

I’ve never used mine in a helmet, I use earplugs to quiet the wind noise and my riding time is devoted to quiet time away from the “convenience” of connectivity, however I believe if you pull the helmet straps apart while pulling over your ears will make it possible to use them. I do find that in a given listening session I may choose to push the AirPod Pros in and twist forward a second time which seems to keep them in place from that point forward. I notice when removing them after extended use there is what feels like a vacuum seal release. Based on this experience you might try putting them in your ears, taking the 5 to 10 minutes to get the bike out and ready to ride (I always do a pre-flight check of tire pressures, brakes, lights, etc just before riding) then gently press the AirPod Pros in and twist forward a second time, just like you initially did, and then put on your helmet. As always, just sharing my ideas and experience with this, YMMV

For people that are watching this works very well but something I did before was clean my ears and the air pods with alcohol wipes because of all the oils in the human ears and they can cause the air pods to sleep out. And then do just as he says it would work fantastically

Thanks for your idea, Bill! I, too, love the sound quality but have had either the left or right (with the smallest cushion size) fall out suddenly. I’ll keep you posted!
