  • European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, speaking in her annual address to the European Parliament, says global markets are "flooded" with cheap Chinese cars. "We do not accept this distortion," von der Leyen said in Strasbourg. "The commission is launching an anti-subsidy investigation into electric vehicles coming from China."

What is she blabbering about. Chinese EVs are cheap in China, not in Europe. In Europe they cost quite a lot, up to double their original price. This puts them very close to the prices of European EVs.
One problem for Europe is that China is much more advanced on EVs technology, with a huge variety of models and quality to choose from.
Another problem is that the price for an ev in Europe is not affordable for most people, no matter where the EV comes from.

How do you know that China would destroy the EU car industry? That's for the market to decide. Also, German car makers are rushing to strike cooperation deals with Chinese EV makers.
Man, it's how the market works. If my product is better, more advanced and more interesting than yours, I'll likely win. Is it my fault that I have a better product or maybe it's your fault for lagging behind? Your government wants to punish me because my products are better. Does that make sense?
Let me remind you that competition benefits us, the customers. It's time that EU companies get their shit together on the EV technology if they want to keep being relevant.@@sidneypedroso3415

The reason why their car are cheaper is because they've mastered almost completely the supply chain which means that they have control over prices. The EU has the financial means to provide equivalent subsidies to help their domestic manufacturers as the US did. This move will probably end with tariffs on import of chinese cars to level the playing field which if not disproportionate can be managed by chinese companies. However if the restrictions are much harsher like in the US, the EU should not be surprised if similar measures are imposed on their car manufacturers in China

The EU has mandated(because of carbon emissions) that by 2035 all new vehicles sold there will be EV's.
The Chinese have started producing and selling EV's to the EU market relativity cheap(much cheaper than the EU manufacturers can.
Now the EU wants to put tariffs on these planet saving vehicles.
I guess that means that the carbon thing is only a problem if the EU can produce EV's to help solve it.
It's like carbon credits, it's ok to pollute as long as you pay a tax.

China, for example, can not abide forever by a petrodollar system of oil purchases. As the world’s largest oil importer, it mathematically recognizes that it will eventually run out of dollars to buy that oil.

The sentiment "If you can't surpass it, suppress it" seems to be a prevalent strategy adopted by Western nations in Europe and America to hinder China's thriving industries. Now, this strategy is being wielded by the EU against Chinese EVs.
Chinese automotive companies now offer cost-efficient EVs tailored to a variety of market segments and customer needs. These vehicles have gained global popularity, particularly in Europe. Contrary to the perception that these industries thrive on substantial national subsidies, their success stems from consistent technological advancements, innovation, and intense competition within China's domestic market.
Interestingly, the cost of Chinese EVs is considerably higher in Europe than in China. For instance, the BYD Seal retails at 44,990 euros in Europe but starts at 24,637 euros domestically. Similarly, Tesla's Model Y and Model 3, exported from their Shanghai Gigafactory to Europe, have steeper prices than in their home market.
China has already phased out its financial subsidy for new energy vehicles since the end of 2022. As early as 2018, China mandated local governments to discontinue subsidies for these vehicles to promote fair competition. Meanwhile, subsidy programs in Europe and the US persist. Germany, for example, offers up to 4,500 euros for EVs priced under 40,000 euros. France offers subsidies of 5,000 euros for the general populace and 7,000 euros for low-income families. The US, under the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 provides a conditional EV subsidy of up to US$7,500.
The EU's countervailing investigation against Chinese EVs appears to be a move to obstruct their entry into the European market through trade protectionism. However, the automobile sector is inherently global, necessitating an open market and equitable competition rather than protectionist measures. It's impractical and unfair to hinder another's progress rather than focusing on self-improvement.
Over the past four decades, Chinese and European auto industries have nurtured mutual trust and cooperation, establishing an intricate web of dependencies. Many European automotive enterprises have long-standing operations in China, reaping benefits from its conducive business environment. Numerous vehicles on China's roads hail from Germany, Japan, America, and France, attesting to the openness and diversity of China's auto market.
Chinese EVs are not a threat to European consumers or carmakers. European-made electric cars tend to be pricey. The introduction of Chinese EVs offers affordable alternatives for European consumers, pushing local companies to innovate faster in the new energy sector. Erecting barriers against Chinese EVs deprives European consumers of the advantages of more choices and potentially stunts the growth of local industries lacking in innovation.
It's essential to acknowledge the pivotal role of EVs in slashing transportation's carbon footprint and combating global climate change. The EU's protectionist approach towards Chinese EVs could impede the global automotive industry's evolution, including within the EU. This could jeopardize global efforts toward carbon neutrality.
