    I ran tire stores for ten years. I dont sell. I ask customers what is important to them and present them with options. I kept triple treds on my sts and would toss a customer the keys and told them to take a ride, point is i gain there trust by validating their concerns and extending courtesy. I got a lot of repeat business.

      Gene I have a question re valve stems if your doing four tires on a car do the valve stems always have to be replaced ? I just changed 4 tires on my moms car but did not have new valve stems and the ones already on the rims were in good shape . some tire techs say you should always change them

  • @neondiamondsaquaberry17
    @neondiamondsaquaberry17 Před 4 lety +4

    Yes the tires need to match especially on the drive axle .. for example if you have front wheel drive car you want the two front tires to match so the thread is the same and drag on the axles is the same , if you have mismatched tires it would be wobbly steering and can damage your transmission, if you have all wheel drive you need all four to match also for the same reason

    I think your media outlet should do a little more preparation when looking for a guest speaker, he is incorrect to make a blanket statement that tires do NOT need to be the same. If you have a standard front or rear wheel drive car, he is pretty much correct (Though not recommended), but, the rules are different if you have an ALL or 4 wheel drive vehicle. An ALL wheel drive vehicle is the most sensitive to tire conditions, with this configuration you must maintain a very close tire diameter on all four tires. The 2 main ways to insure matched diameters are to make sure the tires have a tread depth within 2/32nds of each other and to use the same brand and model for all four tires due to the variations that occur between different manufacturers. The reason this is so important has to do with the way power is distributed to each wheel position in the vehicle, the power does NOT get equally distributed and any differences in the diameter of the tires (if to great) can damage the drive train of the car. If anybody wants to verify my point, the service dept. at the auto dealer can confirm this. The same is true with 4 wheel drive, all though be it, not as sensitive.

      also if you do not have matching tyres on the front you will get tracking , so that when the car you have gets in a road groove it follows the road groove , also tyre rotation is not actually needed with the way that modern tryes are made, rotating tyres is old school bullshit tyre do not actually need rotating anymore and is a waste of energy . personally i would not believe any of this trash in this video, I am a mechanic and local tyre shop gives me trade on things, tyre shops are not evil monsters as depicted , i am sick of these Dicks that bag on the automotive industry yet most know stuff all about cars, i would say that this video is all staged bullshit .

    No! absolutely no! All season tires are not snow tires. They handle 1cm of snow better than a summer tire but if you are in snow you need severe winter rated tires. If it averages under 45f temp then you need to remove the summer tires and fit winter tires. If there is no snow and it's under 45f then you can fit all season.

    • @Samuel-fv7ht
      @Samuel-fv7ht Před 6 lety +1

      tread design is a huge factor for snow as well as rubber compounds an open shoulder all season will indefinitely do better than a closed shoulder "summer"

    Are there unscrupulous automotive facilities? I'm sure, is the norm?... No, I do not believe so. People's knowledge of how their car actually works would be a good start. I don't expect you to know every detail but a general understanding of your car will help you in the long run. I personally have to deal with customers that think they are being taken advantage of even when brought out to the car and giving them an in depth talk about how the problem developed and why it is important to fix it.
    Some things on your car are mission critical while others can be postponed if absolutely necessary.
    I am a trained automotive technician and it really gets me grumpy when people accuse you of being dishonest with them.
    Customers will often ask your opinion of a problem and then automatically reject your professional opinion.

    The most critical thing is the age of the tire you buy, new tires with excess year of manufacturer are ticking time bombs these tires kill many people every year in america . In the UK it is illegal to put new tires on your car if they are over 2 years old, check the manufacture date before you commit

  • @RRaucina
    @RRaucina Před 6 lety +2

    He should tell you check the date code before running your credit card. I had some Dick Cepek tires that the tread come off of like a retread and they were "new" but @ 6 years old. Didn't complain because the driver was spinning tires on a 2wd drive truck in a road that makes river beds look good. But age likely cause the peel rather than just chopping and pitting.

      ah im driving on winter tires right now that are from 1982, there goodyear work horses and they look perfect, i put them on when snow hits the ground up here in the north west and take them off before the snow starts to melt. never see dry pavement and they look brand new still. they have been on 6 different square body chevys and now on my plow truck. year doesnt matter, the way they have been treated are what ruin a tire

    • @dewrus2153
      @dewrus2153 Před 6 lety

      tank-UV rays kill rubber fast...especially older tires without UV inhibitors. If you only run your tires in the winter in snow and store them inside when they're not in use, that might explain why yours lasted...but I wouldn't let my wife or daughter go driving around on tires that old....that's asking for trouble. Their safety isn't worth saving a couple hundred dollars to try to make tires last a lifetime. For some reason, I'm not convinced your tires are really 36 years old...even treated well, I would expect dry rot and cracks. And unless you never drive on pavement, gravel, or dirt roads, they would certainly show wear especially since the rubber is likely as hard as a rock by now. I'm not saying you're lying...but it seems unlikely to me that you're not exaggerating. Maybe you only put them on for a hundred miles per year? I don't know about that, tank.

    An alignment is not a UPSALE. If you get new tires get an alignment. They also check any suspension problems which can quickly wear out a new set of tires. They cost too damn much to have them ruined by cheapskates trying to save a few bucks. But hey its your money.

    • @RetroMMA
      @RetroMMA Před 6 lety +18

      The way you just explained it IS an up-sell... If there is no unusual wear or other indication of alignment issues, simply getting new tires is NOT a reason to have your alignment checked; it's just easy money for a shady shop.

    Do you routinely inspect your tires, inflate your tires and rotate them? If so, you probably don't need to view this video because you are also the guy who can ARTICULATE how many miles he drives each year and under what conditions. Most tires are recommended for replacement after just 4 years.
    In this world, "warranties" don't count for much and you can not depend upon the exact identical tire to be available from any source when you need to replace one on your vehicle.

    Sure. Go ahead and buy online to save $100 for a set. Then pay full price when you go to another store to have them mount tires from a competitor. Buy tires at my work and you get all the basic services for free or a discounted rate. Bring me 4 tires from tirerack and you're paying full price for dismount,mount, balance. And if you want them rebalanced later, Pay again because it's not my tire so no warranty with it. Also if you have a blowout have fun waiting 2 days or so for a replacement to be shipped. At least local stores keep them in stock so you can get a replacement same day.
    I very rarely DONT have a replacement tire available same day for a customer that bought from my work.
    Alignments aren't an upsell. Its It's something your car NEEDS unless you want half the life from your tires and subpar handling.

    "In most cases they (tires) don't need to match, but it's advisable that they do match" - There is no mention of All Wheel Drive or 4x4 vehicles - We are seeing more and more of these on the road, and for these vehicles, there absolutely is a need that the tires need to be the same make, model, size, load and speed rating, and the tread depth needs to be within 2/32" on the same axle, or 3/32" front to back. Kind of an important detail bud, not all vehicles are RWD or FWD...

    This guy tells you to do your research online. Well bud, I run a tire company. In my company, we train our salespeople to always ask questions about how the vehicle is used, driving habits, how long they intend to keep the vehicle, how important is safety and confidence versus cost, how soon they need tire service, and more.
    If you go to a website, the consumer (who is not a tire expert) tries to figure out what tire to buy based on reviews (from other non-experts, or possibly paid review generators), or by reading the marketing material from manufacturers (paid BS generators).
    Better solution - Find a tire shop that you can trust. Most supercenters / chain shops don't have anyone around that cares very much, and won't take the extra effort to make sure you're getting the right advice. An independent shop with the owner on site - that's what you want...

People think there is something wrong with their brakes because the car pulls to one side during breaking. Not when you are slowing down for a traffic light when ur BRAKING! You don't buy all season tires for off road use..... Those are for low temperatures when its 20F you need winter tires. This guy didn't pay attention..... I was surprised that nothing was mentioned in this video about how you can find when a tire was actually manufactured. Something everyone should check before buying a set, as well as asking to see the actually tires before they are installed. I for one make sure they are putting on the tires I had just inspected. Not that they would never switch them on you, but you never know with some of these small places. I have found that many "tire sales" are sometimes too go to be true. If you check the manufacturing date you will see they are actually old and have been sitting new in the warehouse for some time. Temperatures change inside warehouses during seasons, cold weather vs. hot. They are not normally regulated due to their size of the warehouse, which can have an effect on the tires and not to mention how they are moved from point A to point B from time to time, as well as stacked on top of each other. The point here is… check the date as to when they were manufactured. The sales person should know where it is and show you. If he or she doesn't know or claims there isn't one go elsewhere where they know what they are doing. You would be surprised to find some tires sitting for months on end. Sure they rotate them, but when there's no call for them they just sit.

It took the dealer 3 days to do the repair (waiting on parts & they replace all of the studs). The final bill (rental car and repair) was over $500. I submitted the receipts to walmart headquarters and they reimbursed me.

      Stick it to em. I had NTW break 6 and claim they were already broken they just snapped them off. My first car and just bought it so I let it go. Wallmart/Sam's Club has done nothing but damage my cars. Got a Wmart battery that failed 5 times. Every time they replaced it they did more damage to the cables and hold downs. Last one spit acid all over the engine bay. Should have gotten a bill to repaint. Sam's idiots smashed a new muffler putting new tires on. Claimed it was already like that and blew me off. *I will never buy car parts from those scumbags again*

      Your wheel studs can break because they were cross threaded PRIOR to the removal. As in, whoever installed them last could have cross threaded them. They can also become cold welded/galled after a long time of use... in which case it is nobody's fault.

    Go to a tire store with a 200 dollar car and they try to sell you 80,000 mile tires (the most premium product) and then use scare tactics to upsell brakes and other services.

    On front wheel drive car the rear should last much longer than the front

    • @BensCoffeeRants
      @BensCoffeeRants Před 6 lety

      That's why you should rotate your tires, so they wear evenly. Ideally, you don't want super grippy new tires on the front and worn ones in the back or vice versa either.

    • @BensCoffeeRants
      @BensCoffeeRants Před 5 lety

      @ferkemall ABS only applies when your braking and locking up the tires, you need traction when accelerating and turning as well. Traction control might try to help but only so much it can do if your lacking physical grip, and in most cars traction control also uses the brakes so it's best not to over-work the system unnecessarily and rotate the tires so they wear more evenly.

      Joseph Wolosz Wrong. DOT code says it all on the sidewall of the tire. The 1st 2 characters of the DOT indicate the exact plant/location where the tire was made.
