    The best video on the internet right now to explain, exemplify, dissect, analyze, design, implement and test sharepoint information arch. Content Type, Term Store Site Column, Tags design are commonly either mis-used or under utilized in both small & large corps. What type of obstacles have you run into when stepping into an existing organization that needs to refactor their information architecture? For example retrofitting list items or documents to fit in with a new properly designed information architecture, for example or even implications of power apps or old InfoPath stuff

      Hey there! Thanks for watching the video and for your great question. When stepping into an existing organization that needs to refactor their information architecture, there can be several obstacles.
      One common obstacle is resistance to change. People may be comfortable with the current structure and may not see the value in reorganizing. It's important to communicate the benefits of a well-designed information architecture and how it can improve efficiency, findability, and user experience.
      Another obstacle can be legacy systems or outdated tools, such as InfoPath forms. These may not integrate well with the new information architecture design. In these cases, it's important to evaluate the existing solutions and identify the best approach for transitioning to a more modern and integrated architecture, which can include using Power Apps or other tools that align with the new design.
      When retrofitting existing list items or documents to fit into a new information architecture, it's often necessary to do some data transformation and migration. This can be a complex task, especially if there is a large amount of existing data. It's important to plan and test the migration process thoroughly to ensure that data is successfully moved and mapped to the new architecture.
      Overall, refactoring an organization's information architecture requires careful planning, clear communication, and a phased approach to implementation. It's also important to involve stakeholders and end users throughout the process to ensure that their needs are understood and met.

    Dope AF. The way you set it up is the way I am setting up my company's intranet with the exception of the terms. I like that idea of placing across the tenant. I had mine on the the few communication sites. Also, the KQL is very helpful to grab items from across the tenant. Good stuff and keep em coming. Consider making a video on implementing Yammer across the org.

      Hello, thanks for watching. If you are using the term store for tags, then yes, you can secure the group of tags to a certain set of users and/or security groups

    Thank you for the illustrative video! Really liked the approach and tried to apply it in my environment. I am struggling with one thing: when I want to directly add my site columns to a new site, the columns I've created do not show up. I first need to add the content type and then delete it again (including site columns) before being able to add the site columns to all existing content types in the site. Is there a setting I missed?

    • @DeShonClark
      @DeShonClark  Před 2 lety

      hey Tobias, is this the case when adding the columns to a new site collection?
      The content type should already be available to the existing site collection, and for new site collections, it may take a day or two to be auto provisioned.
      The content types should not need to be manually added.
      Let me know how this is working...oh, yeah, thanks for watching!

      @@DeShonClark thank you for your answer. The content types are published, i.e. I can add them. What you seem to be doing in the video is directly adding a Site column (e.g. "Tesla Category") instead of adding the content type. In my environments (even after waiting for days / weeks) the custom columns are only visible after I have added the Content Type. As I would like to add the columns to the existing content types (e.g. News), I need to first add my base content type, then remove it including the columns and only thereafter can I add my custom columns to the existing content types in the site.

    @DeShonClark Thanks. This is awesome. Can you tell me how and what I'd need to do in order to replicate the Tesla top navigation with the dropdown menu as it displays? Is there a json file I would need to add or what other customizations would I need to make in order to create a top navigation like this? Thanks.

    • @DeShonClark
      @DeShonClark  Před rokem

      Hey there! I'm glad you found the video helpful. Unfortunately, in the video, I didn't cover how to replicate the Tesla top navigation with the dropdown menu. Creating a custom top navigation with dropdown menus would require some additional customization beyond what I covered in the video. I'm sorry I can't provide you with a direct solution for this specific customization.
      However, if you're interested in creating a custom top navigation with dropdown menus in SharePoint, there are a few different approaches you can take. One way would be to use SharePoint Framework (SPFx) to create a custom web part with the desired navigation structure. Another option would be to use the SharePoint Online Modern Script Editor web part to add some custom JavaScript and CSS to achieve the desired functionality.
      I hope this helps, and I apologize for any inconvenience. If you have any other questions or need further assistance, feel free to ask!

    Hi, thanks for this great strategy :) Unfortunently I have the same problems likes another users. I cant use content type to propagate columnt to another site. How you think, it can be connected with chcange rules for content tpye publishing on sep. 21? Yours vide is publising after this change, but maby you haw some new knowleg today what can be a reason?

    • @DeShonClark
      @DeShonClark  Před rokem +1

      with the new change, you have to add the content type to the site pages library, and then add in the columns. There are a lot of hoops to jump thru, not sure if Microsoft really thought this out

    Deshon, got this up and working and really liking it.... One small detail, you have only the "Modified" column showing in the highlighted content results.... Mine by default shows me the "modified by" as well. Can I customize this to show/hide columns I want? If so how?

    • @DeShonClark
      @DeShonClark  Před rokem +1

      awesome! glad this is working for you. It can be a bear to set-up, but once it is rolling it's like honey!
      I'm seeing Modified By as well, seems like Msft changed it. They have also changed how site columns from the content type HUB are associated to the site pages library...a few extra clicks...mostly not obvious, but I will shoot an updated video showing the new technique.

  • @YoungerFuthark
    @YoungerFuthark Před 2 lety +1

    Something must have changed, as I cannot add custom site columns to libraries, but only to lists and even then only if I specify the new content type in the list's [New] drop down.

    • @YoungerFuthark

      Never mind. It took ~36 hrs for my custom site columns to appear in "Add from existing site columns" on teh Site pages library.
