Debunking Crystal Meth Myths | The War on Drugs

  • Around 500,000 people in California are addicted to methamphetamine. Out of a population of almost 40 million, that’s one in every 200 people. But this goes way beyond the US: Meth is raging across Mexico, the Philippines and South-East Asia too.
Meth is also one of the most misunderstood and unfairly stigmatized of all the illegal drugs. Here we pick apart crystal meth fact from fiction and discover how the War on Drugs has created a world on speed.
In The War On Drugs, we examine the social implications of prohibition worldwide. Any attempt to shut down the trade in drugs such as heroin, cocaine, ecstasy, ketamine or weed invariably sets off a chain of events that just makes things worse, leaving a trail of death, illness, violence, slavery, addiction, crime and inequality across the globe.
Everyone loses - except, in a weird kind of way, the drugs themselves.

I was addicted to meth from the age 16 until age 30. I have all my teeth, my skin isn’t riddled with holes and sores but, it really f’d me up physically because I wasn’t taking care of myself , I was picking at my skin, not eating, not sleeping, etc & it took me about 2 years after I got clean to get back to normal physically. I am happy to be 8 years clean today
    **update**
I’ve had a few think I’m a bot, or full of crap but I’m real & so is my story. I want to clarify that I am not without any damage to my body from my years in addiction, that would be foolish to claim. I was just simply saying that in MY experience that I am thankful I still have my teeth & my scars from picking, etc have mostly faded. I am aware that I am highly privileged in that regard because so many have completely destroyed their bodies.

I was a meth addict for many years now. I've been sober for 3 years but it was unintentional because I was forced to move to a place where I don't know any dealers personally. I don't buy meth from people that I don't know or those who are not recommended by people that I know of. It's a struggle for 3 years as you literally have an itch that can only be scratched in a certain way. However, I immediately see the effects of me not using meth for 3 years. There are both positive and negative effects, most of the negatives though is withdrawal. Your mood swings are insane, it is difficult to get sleep and you feel like you have completely lost your willingness to do something. I feel like I am helpless if I'm sober, and everyday is a struggle looking for someone who knows someone where I can buy. After a while, it gets better though, right now I am avoiding a situation where there's a possibility that I can get it. The only time that I realized that I was getting better when there was one time when one of my friend told me that he has some and wanted to come over so we can smoke, I respectfully declined and since then he never asked me to smoke meth out of respect of my decision. It is not a complete BS to tell you that smoking meth is like giving you an insane amount of mental ability to do things that you couldn't do, ranging from arts, music, and science but the longer you're using the your body will want more and more and that is a problem. Your dosage level will increase to a point that 90% of your income will be only spent on meth. My advice to those who are still on it, maintain your dosage if you haven't decided to quit yet and for those people who knows a love one who is addicted on meth, don't force them to go to rehab if they are not ready because they will go into relapse and it is far worst than what they are currently.

Not sure if you can read this comment, but you most likely have ADHD. Most people who have major "benefits" from meth beyond the high (e.g. being able to *better* manage their life or focus like neurotypical people) do, and you might want to seek a therapist not to get on meds (unless they're non-amphetamine meds like strattera or guanfacine) but to develop coping skills and the like so you *don't* get back on it, and so if you *do* have the urge there's the option of safer and less stigmatized harm reduction.

My sister and I were both IV addicts. I used heroin and cocaine, she used heroin and meth. I did dabble in meth as well but I found it way too intense. Once she started to use meth her life really went downhill. She began stealing from every store she went into. She stole upwards of 500 designer bags so she could sell them for more drugs. It also changed her diet and she started consuming more sugar which led to poor dental health because she wasn’t brushing her teeth regularly due to being homeless. It wasn’t the meth directly that fucked up her teeth, but it was the effects of it on her mental and physical state that caused her to stop caring for herself. She ended up getting pregnant and having a beautiful little boy and she’s now almost a year clean and working to get custody of him.

i disagree Mizu. the war on drugs is un-winable. it has failed miserably. it will not and cannot be won or even decreased, until foregin and domestic manufactures are delt with. realistically, not even then. due to the ammount of profit involved and void being filled ceaselessly. furthermore the money must be followed to those here in the U.S., to individuals who are profiting on that trade. reguardless of where that leads and to whom. these are the actual criminals in this equation and where the focus should be. the indivduals using drugs are more victims of unscrupulous profiteers than anything. the drug user suffers from addiction and health problems, both mental and physical. addicts should be assisted rather than imprisoned. that said, my personal belief is addiction is more a bad choice and not a disease. on a more important and pressing note. it's actually "NOT" the goverments business what an adult consumes. goverment regulation and criminal enforcement is an overreach of tyrannical athuority impeding constitutional right's and freedoms. contempoary amercians are so conditioned and indoctranated, that we continually and willingly accept the diminishing of personal freedom without question. i see this as a more destructive force than drugs or their unquestionable negitive impact. if an addict OD's, honestly thats just one less problem (theirs). the current sedious policies, procedures and practices, have done ZERO to combat drugs, they're use or manufacture. the drug issue has done nothing but increase, despite alleged efforts to stop them. what has been acomplished is the deminishing of constitutional rights and freedoms provided by an extreamly faux pas criminal and sezure court, protected by rule of law while utilzing pirate tactics and disenfranchisement perpatrated upon subjugated citizens by a ruleing elite. rather than elected servants of "we the people". plus we are further inflicted by the growth and advancment of the "corporate" prison system, in the supposed land of the free. the U.S.imprison's more citizens than any other country. due mainly to arbitary laws and policy, enforced for the most on the most marginalised and defensless people affected by drugs and our contempoary attempts at combating them. one more thing, if illicit drugs were legal and readily avaiable to those who seek them, actual violent and property crimes would deminish overnight. due to the fact that the majority of real crimes is preformed by addicts attempting to get that next fix. as it now stands, the cure is worse than the disease. physician heal thyself!

I've had similar experiences although if you're a occasional weekend user the loss of appetite is noticeable and you can very easily go a day without eating. Although if you're a more frequent functional user your appetite comes back after the first 2 or 3 days you do it. Basically your metabolism adjusts itself to get use to the drug even if doses are increased, a similar way to how the brain's neurotransmitter production adjusts to form a tolerance to the high it gives but this takes longer to take effect usually.

I did a fair amount of meth when young, and live in a hood where lots of people still do. I disagree with this guy. I found that it only took a couple of days on the stuff before I started seeing things that were not there/
Faces of meth is false? I don't think so. There is a woman in my hood, a prostitute. She used to be pretty cute. Now I see her around, she is gaunt and putting on heavy makeup to cover the sores on her face. People get to the point where they chronically pick their own skin, looking for bugs which their skin feels like they have.
It won't hook you right away? Well, that may be true when you sniff it, but after the first time I injected it, I started craving it, a lot, which happened to my friends, too.
It doesn't mess up your teeth? Again, I disagree. It makes you grind your teeth a lot, it gives you a dry mouth, it makes you crave sweets because you can't stand or digest regular food, and it makes you neglect self-care. That is a recipe for early toothlesness.
I am not saying that our current approach is good, or working. Clearly, it is not. I think there should be access to good, high-quality treatment on demand. but I do not think that free-market legalization is a good idea. It is addictive, and the craving is bottomless. Tolerance builds rapidly, and people who originally would stay up all night on one-fortieth of a gram may find themselves doing a gram and a half in one shot. Snd does their personality deteriorate? Big time. Paranoid psychosis sets in really quickly so does a lack of compassion and a generally bad attitude, often leading to violence. It is not the narcotics addicts who pick fights with people for literally no reason. It's the meth heads. That is until they reach the really advanced stage, where you just see them danging around constantly, homeless, putting together piles of trash on the streets, and dancing and wiggling constantly while talking. But you don't understand a word that they say, because they have talked so much that their voices are gone.
It was not the government, but the drug-using hippies of the 1960s, who coi8nded the phrase "speed kills." They saw it happen, and so have I. A lot of my friends from my meth using days are dead.

This was very enlightening. I've honestly never once, ever, heard your specific opinions, or series of facts, presented like this before -- which makes me feel dumb, but I'm very glad and grateful to have been able to have learned of all this, and so thanks for opening my eyes.. it makes me think they're probably a lot of other topics that perhaps I know about and consider obvious that other people might not know about. As well I'm sure there are a number of topics that you know about in addition to this that I'm completely unaware of.
....So I'm going to subscribe to this channel for sure !, and learn as much as I can about this--- but now I just also want to see what else there is around the world that I I'm not told about for whatever reason.. not only drugs, but them, and politics, and culture, everything. This video opened my eyes in a way I did not expect lol.
I'm sure some people, probably like a billion people, already knew about this but maybe it's because I'm a dumb American or maybe it's because the media isn't great here, or you only hear one side of things here? I don't know.. But-- I've never heard you're arguments, and it makes me think differently about what else I might not know..
For example, did you know that when they made methylenedioxy-methamphetamine illegal, in the US, one of the main ways that they demonized this amphetamine that seemingly brought together all different races and genders of various orientations, lovingly and unproductively dancing peacefully as one ---- it was to shown that the brain of a person who was on MDMA had all these crazy holes in it...welllll..... turned out , that wasn't an MDMA user, it was a user who had heavily been involved with methamphetamine for many years and years - and that info came out just a few years afterwards , but they didn't do a damn thing to change the laws.. the 1980s n 90s saw the government here screw its own in a lot of ways... I have my own theories on that but I won't allow it right now haha...
I know in England and elsewhere people talk about cathinones or MCAT, or, 3 MMC or different things like that ... but do you know , here in America, barely anyone knows about any of that stuff? Literally if you brought it up you'd be considered some kind of drug freak depending on WHOM you talk to; when in reality, I do chemical research writing, so I read about things from all over the world! But, the moment I talk to somebody about... MXE... Or explain what etizolam is, or aminorex.. I risk getting branded or stigmatized, the way your video kind of suggests; I think you're right that there's an unfair stigmatization and a causality that is completely rooted in bias and a bigotry - a real social classest bigotry. It shouldn't be this way.
It's only doing a disservice to world culture and to our survival as a species to not tell the truth to one another about this and about anything. Anyway sorry I do rant because as I said I am a writer so I fill pages with words far too easily!! Lol.. I just wanted to thank you for making this video and feel free to make other videos that you might think are delving into topics that everybody already knows all about --- because they might not.. I get paid to research this stuff and I don't know sooo much.
    Peace!!🔥💎🔥💎🔥

I have casually used speed for 35 years. It is like any hard drug, moderation. Remember Alcohol is by far the worlds most destructive drug. I was a functional alcoholic for ten years and that almost killed me working long hours , 5 hours sleep a night and a good social life. Ten years of that i was like, back to very low use of weed and little bit of speed on weekends. I feel 10 million percent better than that feral drunk playing WOT tank till 11pm then driving a forklift hungover and brain-dumbed at 5 am every morning. My ex is still a chronic alcoholic and she will not live a long life if she keeps drinking. Ps i have never injected drugs, that is fucked. Only snorted, eaten in capsule or smoked. Smoking is great fun but i keep to a minimum as the sleeping pattern suffers. And in am financially stable so never done crime for drugs or alcohol. If life wasn't so depressing being born into economic bondage and crammed into these shoe-box cities i am sure many people "not all" would need less drugs.

yeah fenanyl is way worse then meth but they're just saying that meth is worse then opioids. it's like someone saying i see your 6 i show you 7 but for someone reason you're saying it's stupid because they could've said is see your 7 and show you 8

    • @mishano6087
      @mishano6087 Před 2 dny

@@alextandos7340 no, no I didn't. There's no 6 in this situation all opioids are the 8 if meth is the 7. I say fentanyl because it's the equivalent of meth street drug wise, (cheap synthetic and everywhere) the difference between hydrocodone and Adderall is exactly the same as meth and fentanyl . Believe me I've been addicted and recovered from every substance I'm talking about. You can be addicted to mdma or Vyvanse and your 'withdrawal' is still going to be a cake walk compared to someone who's equally addicted to codiene. Idk the exact pharmacology of it , I'm not saying the impact the addictions have on your life are that different but going without one is like drowning whereas the other is like wading water for a slightly uncomfortable amount of time. Amphetamines are better for your health in 2 ways; they're 1000x safer and take A LOT more to fatally overdose like you'd have to be trying to at that point, and b. The withdrawal/detox is hell on wheels and lasts three times longer. Detoxing from any amphetamine is lying in bed for 3 days extremely dehydrated, depressed, lethargic and possibly paranoid with no appetit but a lot of sleep. By the 4th day you're felling better by day 5 your good as new except maybe the damage u may have done to your teeth. Opioid detox is a whole nother beast. Only alcohol and benzos have it beat because they can literally kill you (Google where the term cold turkey originates) opioid detox is like the worst flu of your life x10 horrible gastrointestinal distress (shit's and puking) total insomnia for at least a couple days , super high blood pressure like palpations through your whole body, the worst anxiety ever if you can call it that it's more like wanting to jump out of your own skin, hot flashes and chills , hot AND cold sweats and intense pain all over. Minimum 8 days before you start to feel better 30 if You're getting off methadone. All opioids work the same they have what's called a morphine mg equivalence (mme) Codiene is 1:0.1 fentanyl is 1:100 but it doesn't matter what dose your on your addiction is based on your tolerance and someone with a 20,000mme daily habit can experience the same withdrawals as someone with a 100 mme habit the difference is how many times you've detoxed before it gets harder every time. Trust me no amphetamine is better for u or safer than any opioid. That's why I laugh at people who are addicted to lean think that they're not heroin addicts. Codiene is metabolized into morphine and heroin is diacetylmorphine. Plus most lean is fake Robitussin with fentanyl anyways. I'll amend my comment " id much rather be addicted to ANY amphetamine or even stimulant than ANY opiate.

It is not that I have ever used meth, but as a chemist I have this to say about the issue of amphetamines destroyng teeth. It is cetanly true that pure amphetamines, as those a person will get from a pharmacy, will not do any harm to teeths. But much illegal amphetamine/methamphetamine does contain impurities, because of the way it is produced, and I would say that some of these impurities could do a lot of damage to teeths - especially if the substance is smoked. You could maybe draw some paralells to the drug "crocodile". The active substance in it is dexo-morphine, a substance that is pretty much similar to other types of morphine, and it self will not cause the destruction of the body, associated with "crocodile". In fact dexo-morphine, has been sold in pharamacies in some countries earlier. What gives "crocodile" the horrible effect on the body, are the impurities it contain, from the way it is made from red phosphorous and other chemicals. The primary harmfull effect from many illegal drugs, are the many impurities they contain. There is a huge difference between using a pure product, made in pharmacutical factory, and the illegal variant made in an improvised laboratory.

None of the Nazi soldiers who were taking meth experienced any more dental problems. Anyone who stays up for 20 days straight is going to have a sagging face like FoM, and as he explained the dental problems are a result of not brushing your teeth, grinding your teeth, etc., not because the meth is poisoning your teeth or something. Speaking from experience couple of things in this video that bothered me. All forms of speed tend to make your mouth dry inviting bacteria to stick around. Also people who are on amphetamines tend to grind their teeth a lot and this is what leads to the typical Meth mouth. And like the video said people who are deeply addicted to drugs tend to not take care of themselves and oral health being so extremely expensive in the United States is off of the table altogether. But don't think for a moment that amphetamine and other forms of speed are completely benign. You've ever seen anyone who is taken methamphetamine for long periods of time they get what is called amphetamine psychosis which is undifferentiated from schizophrenia. Also think about where meth is made and how it's made and who is making it. I don't know about you but I really don't want to do a drug that includes things like rat poison and drain cleaner and other things. And remember I am speaking from experience at the bullshit that is fed by the government.

Stimulant psycosis in all but the rarest of cases comes NOT from the drug, but from failing to sleep for days on end.
There are 18 million active perscriptions for amphetamine, methamphetamine, and dextroamphetamine filled out every year, you walk by productive memebers of sociaty (me included) who use these drugs regularly and do not go nuts. Danger from amphetamines unilaterally come from illicit supply, and irresponsible use.
You dont see people blameing booze when someone drinks themself out of a home, dont blame speed if someone makes the ACTIVE CHOICE not to sleep for a week streight.

This is just so wrong on many levels. Meth does make your teeth fall out if you SMOKE it. And the scabs on their face and shrunk in face is from meth! Meth makes you lose weight and pick at your skin on high doses and smoking those toxic chemicals is awful for your teeth. The people who take normal amphetamines do not lose their teeth because they aren’t smoking it. They also can lose weight and pick at their face but only if their doctor prescribed them too high of a dose. I took adderall once and I literally chewed the entire inside of my mouth up in one night.

Did it for 4 weeks just to try it. I’ve been depressed since i was 9 as far as i can remember. It made me a different person. I’ve never felt so happy and clear headed. The world just seemed so much better. I was more social, i was kinder and more empathetic. I thought this was how regular people felt. I’ve never had a happy day ever, and i thought this was how i wanted to feel all the time. I caught myself sneaking around and using it in the bathroom. I would do it in the living room when family was around and they werent looking. I know what addiction looks like because ive seen it in other people. The fear of being homeless without a profession or anyone that loved me was too much. I decided to quit. The world literally looked black and white. The joy that i had was gone and i was back to feeling the dread of day to day life. Small things that i enjoyed didnt matter anymore. I didnt care about anything or anyone. Before I didnt have the strength to keep going, everyday for years i thought of just ending it. I felt like i had no purpose. Now i had a taste of true happiness, and i decided to leave it behind. I know i will never do it again because it’s something i still don’t have or will ever feel again. it’s too good.

You need to find something that stimulates your brain without being harmful to you.
Meth made you happy because the meth molecule is very similiar to the dopamine molecule. But you were lucky to quit, meth destroys lives, the more you do it the more you need to get your "fix".
I had depression too but I solved in a few different ways:
1)I got a small dog. Dogs are one of the best ways to cure depression, they are loyal and give unconditional love.
Keep in mind that they are living beings and not toys so if you get one you have to be prepared to meet the dogs needs and give him a good life. I recommend a smaller breed since they produce less waste and need less space.
2)I started reading lots of books
3)I started doing creative things like 3d modeling and level design. Anything that needs creativity and where you can express your emotions through art really helps.
4)Physical exercise. It made me feel alive and I get "high" after a good run thanks to my body producing chemicals.
It also increases my libido ahaha.
All the things listed above should make you feel better and should cure your depression. I never took any drugs or anti depressants.
Those 4 things work because they stimulate your brain and produce you "happiness" chemicals.
Stay away from drugs people and be happy!
