When certain chapters on the Mughal dynasty were removed by the government, a lot of people on social media celebrated the move by saying that Mughals were often associated with violence and the destruction of religious sites. So, it would be right to not teach the children about such Kings. But did you know that in India's history, there were several kings who have made similar use of violence? Even glorified kings like Ashoka and Akbar have been known to use violence!
What drove these kings to exercise violence? What were the reasons behind their decision? But more importantly, so many Kings throughout history have made use of violence, what standards should be used to describe them? Watch the video to get answers!

Correction: There is a debate around when Emperor Ashoka converted. For example, Sanjeev Sanyal’s book says that Emperor Ashoka converted to Buddhism before entering the Kalinga war. Ashoka invaded Kalinga in 262 BC and a minor rock edicts that Ashoka had converted to Buddhism more than two years earlier. Thank you to those who pointed this out!

Thank you. I just don't get why Indians see our past as being glorious when the modern age is the most peaceful & living standards are much better now! Maybe, it's not wanting to face the reality that for a thousand years, we were enslaved by "foreigners", when in reality there was no concept of "country" here before 1947. Plus Monarchs were no friends of the civilians & absolute power has always corrupted people, absolutely.

Kudos for picking up this topic and not flinching from speaking truth. Humans have an intrinsic desire to always glorify their past without knowing anything and picking only selective evidence to confirm the same . Always good to have an honest reflection of it.

Being a Buddhist, I can confirm that King Ashoka was a Buddhist many years before the Kalinga war. There is an inscription in sanchi mentioned Ashoka as a PRINCE tripped to sanchi stupa with his newly married wife. In 14th major rock edict of Ashoka does not mention he converted to Buddhism after Kalinga war but he felt more attraction to Buddhism after Kalinga.
Secondly, being a Buddhist, it does not mean king can not fight wars. Wars are integral part of moranchy. Monarchy fight war in interests of their kingdom. History is full of wars.
Despite Kalinga war, king Ashoka had very beautiful views and doctrine reflected in his administration and propagation of Buddhism, mentioned in his rock edicts.

Not only Indian kings but also rulers across the world employed violence as a means of asserting their authority. Historical accounts provide numerous examples of this widespread phenomenon. For instance, ancient Egyptian pharaohs employed military force to expand their territories and maintain dominance over their subjects. In Europe, kings and emperors engaged in brutal wars to conquer new lands and establish their rule. Similarly, Chinese dynasties, such as the Qin and Han, employed violence to consolidate their power and enforce their laws. From the Aztec rulers in Mesoamerica to the feudal lords in Japan, violence was a prevalent tool utilized by leaders worldwide to exert control and enforce their rule.

It is said ashoka dyed the river daya full red with the bloodshed and then in the aftermath he changed himself seeing the bloodshed. Biased video." Violence" done by kings is used as a means to justify Islam in India and how we all should be tolerant towards Mughal kings.
"Violence" is pointed out as a common quality shared by both hindu/mughal kings and therefore its suggested that Hinduism is no different than Islam.
It is pointed out, that the Hindu kings are also "violent" towards foreign religions and therefore it is only fair Mughals kill Hindus and destroy Hindu temples.
The youtuber suggest that we all should hate the Hindu kings equally as Mughals🤣 because "VIOLENCE"🤣
All the while the video ignores the main points of Islamic ideology:
how it is intolerant by design.
how it is political by design.
how it is a foreign religion and not indigenous.
how many violent verses it contains compared to Hinduism.
how the scriptures preaches violence against other religions. (does Hinduism do that?)
violence is common in power struggles across all religions. WW1 was Christians vs Christians (of the same family). Violence is an outcome of war, And war is fought for Ideology.
Is the youtuber implying that we should view the Hindu kings in the same disdain that we view Mughal kings because "violence" is a common factor in both? Ideology does not matter apparently.

Let me Educate you - he made multiple statements about his remorse and regretting on killing and captivating. he changed by admitting his mistakes, started thinking and worked on the futility and Tragedy of war. Post then he dedicated his life and huge wealth towards building a society where people lived by the rules of virtue and good moral behavior. There are some of his words carved on the walls by Ashoka about the religious tolerance "Should one blames other religions or over glorify ones own religion, they are infact doing harm to it and an act should not be done". Ashoka erected pillars ( Ashoka symbols ) all across his kingdom where the official reads scripts written by Ashoka to the poors where his official took the complaints and compliments for the betterment. *HE IS GREAT BECAUSE he became the first Indian king to think about the welfare of the poor rather than using them just for tax revenue* as he stated "the final conquest is the conquest of the right and not of the might".

@percygekkouga2151 @percygekkouga2151 OK. So from starting
      1. He cherry-picked lines from the Mahabharat episode, and it would seem like Shri Krishna wanted war. But the reason why Shri Krishna said not to attack first was because it is crossing the limits of Dharma. There is literally a 'Shanti Parva' in Mahabharat where Shri Krishna tries really hard to establish peace despite knowing the fact that Mahabharat will happen. You can literally see how much Hard Work Shri Krishna tries to put in order to establish peace and says that if for peace any Pratigya is sacrificed, then it means that Shanti is quite cheap
      2. I don't get it why he took Ramayan example despite there being nothing wrong there.
      3. He mentioned half truths about Samrat Ashoka.
      1) Samrat Ashok never had 99 brothers. The Ashokvadhana is an overexaggeration. He maximum would have around 6 brothers.
      2) Samrat Ashok was not always violent. He was a pretty peaceful guy at the start. He infact managed to stop a rebel, which his elder brother Sushim couldn't without any bloodshed. He was pretty famous among people due to his good governance. He became much more violent after his mother death as it was Sushim who killed her and also tried to kill her pregnant wife when he was on exile. It was Radhagupta who saved his wife.
      3) Samrat Ashoka never killed any ministers. The reason is that all ministers liked him and were convinced that he should be the king. He was righteous, and his subjects in Ujjain were living happily, and he was an expert at stopping rebels. Only one two ministers were on Sushim's side. However, Sushim was pretty much useless as he couldn't stop revolt in his own regime. He was flirty and much more. Under Radhagupta, all ministers tried to convince Bindusar that Ashok should be the king, but he had too much love for his son. He died like that, but before Sushim came, all ministers summoned Ashok and declared him as king, which led to 4 years long Civil War. After Kalinga's war, he was convinced on Non Violence but made a strict rule.
      3. He mentioned Jalouka as the son of Samrat Ashok. However, there was no son of Ashok whose other name was Jalouka. Historians like Romila Thappar say that Jalouka might be Kunala, but that's highly unlikely reasons being.
      1) He was taking care of Takshashila Province and not Kashmir.
      2) Based on some of his stories, he is someone who will never go against his father.
      3) He never became the king due to the fact that he was made blind by Tishyaraksha (Samrat Ashok's wife).
      4. Tishyaraksha was jealous of Bodh Tree, but she never destroyed any Bodha temple. In fact, Samrat Ashok was already Buddhist before marrying her. So it made no sense. She was given a death sentence for blinding Kunala.
      5. I don't know why he mentioned Krishnadevaray and Tenali Rama as they had no role in the next story.
      6. The King Shashanka fact is correct. However, some historians also suggest that it was done as political motivation, and Buddha people lived peacefully under him.
      7. He mentions that Chanakya Neeti also promotes violence for the throne. However, in order to understand Chanakya Neeti, you should know some basic principles of Neeti. Chanakya Neeti is for making of a perfect king and nation. Neeti is subsect of Dharma meaning ways to establish Dharma within society. There are four Principles of Neeti namely 'Sam (Peacefully talking)', 'Dam (Using greed of a person)', 'Dand (You know)', 'Bhed (do anything)'. The order of using this principle is same as above. That's the reason why Violence is necessary. So this argument is pretty stupid as in order to maintain Dharma (Dharma does not mean religion). Not all kings who used violence were good. I agree on that fact. The fact is wrong that Chanakya Neeti promotes violence.
      8. This fact is als wrong that Jain and Bhudhism gain popularity in 6th CE due to acst discrimination. This religions were always there in the society and a big number of people followed it.
      9. I agree the fact that many Kings before Mughal were bad and they did wrong. However, the one I see people idolize are- Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Maharana Pratap, Krishnadevaray, Kuvar Amar Singh, Raja Raja Chola-1, Samudragupta, Chandragupta-2, Chandragupta Maurya, etc. Also the reason why we should celebrate Ashok was because he saw faults in his way and changed for better. Also the fact that he never intentionally hurt his subjects or other people. That's the reason why he got two names as Chand Ashok and Devanampriya Priyadarshi. It would have been better if he had divided the video in 3 parts and did proper research.

    A small factual correction!
Ashoka didn't accept buddhism after the war. He was already a Buddhist (most probably since 4 years before Kalinga or may be even before) . The story of him converting to buddhism after seeing bloodshed is just made up & has no mentions in any scriptures, all Buddhist manuscripts that talk about ashoka bust this myth. and this just happens to be another romanticized version of history written in NCERT may be to make the story more dramatic. Many experts even attribute his violent actions to his evangelical aspirations to spread buddhism across the subcontinent. But i won't go into the details of that since the purpose of this comment is to simply point out factual inaccuracy in the video.

There is a code that historians have to keep in mind “ Don’t try to compare or judge historical figures or individuals to today’s modern understanding of the people’s rights because the conclusion is not fit from any perspective “
People who are interested in or studying history knows that history itself has to be taken with a grain of salt since historically how good or bad the events maybe they still have more sides than what appears on the paper and the understanding of these sides tells more about the situation and the environment of that time period.

Labelling them “ Jihadi rulers “ because the action taken by them were cruel but every empire and king will have these exact moments.

    Misleading & selective.
    1. Ashoka was a Buddhist before Kalinga war.
    2. Violence was the norm of ancient & mediaeval period, but in this video the instances have been selectively used to portray that violence was used for religious reasons in the pre-islamic era.
    3. The thumbnail itself shows Maharaj Krishna Dev Raya as Ashoka.
    4. Pushyamitra wasn't the last Hindu ruler of that region, yet the saachi stupa still exists, pointing to the fact that there was bare minimum religious violence before Islamic rule.
    5. Most of the references given here are of D. N. Jha, who is a well known leftist historian (distorian). Point is not about him being leftist, point is about only showing the leftist POV which in a way creates a confirmation bias.
    6. Last but not the least, it's the oldest technique of subversion where along with 4 facts one misleading information is shown so that it appears as a fact to slowly subvert the audience for a particular agenda.
Then again, I'm hopeful many viewers here are responsible enough that they'll do more research before believing in anything shown above, that's the best way to ensure you're not misled. Mohak here is a good creator, but even he can't always be correct.

About point two. The purpose was to show that there are number of cases where violence occurred in the name of religion in pre Islamic times and not excusively after islamic invasion. That was the purpose. So I don't see that as a negative/criticism.
Now if your criticism is to say that more religion based killings ouccred after Islamic rule then it is going to be difficult. For that one has to scour through many source pre Islamic invasion and post Islamic invasion. Then there is many other issues like what is a religion based killing in the context of the study, likelihood of sources being poorer quality or less in number as we go further back in time and missing information. By the time he lists all those examples pre Islamic invasion and post Islamic invasion the video will be hours long.
In history, you need to select sources to prove your point. You must obviously show the alternative viewpoint too but there is limit to how long the argument can be.

History is filled with blood and battles. And hence should be seen from the eyes of it's own context and not Modern day concepts
