Air Rifle Hunting, Corvid Dolly Mixture

- I was asked by a farmer friend to help with a problem he had with magpies, rooks, feral pigeons and jackdaws coming into the cattle sheds and scrounging not only through the silage but also the area he stores the meal that's given to the cattle. This can cause not only a health and safety issue for the livestock but also those who work in the sheds as the birds dung over everything, the silage, water troughs, bars, gates, walls and even the cattle.
This was filmed a good few years but i believe by now the meal is kept in silo's so the birds don't cause much of a problem any more.
This is all done on farm land that i have permission to do so on with legally held air rifles and is done in a legal and humane manner as not to prolong or glorify the death of the birds.
This can legally be done through the Department Of Agriculture, Environment And Rural Affairs Wildlife (Northern Ireland) Order 1985 (As Amended) Licence.
This Licence hereby authorises for the purpose of preventing the spread of disease and preventing serious damage to livestock, foodstuffs for livestock, crops, vegetables, fruit, growing timber and fisheries ANY AUTHORISED PERSON to kill or take any of the following birds:-
Crow, Jackdaw, Magpie, Pigeon (Wood), Pigeon (Feral), Rook.
Range Finder Bushnell Scout 1000
Rifle BSA Super10 John Bowkett Blueprinted .22cal 15ft/lb
Scope Nikko Stirling Targetmaster 4-16x44 LRX
Pellets JSB Diabolo Exact 15.9 Grain
As regards birds, I mainly shoot Wood Pigeons on my permission and I stopped trying chest shots some time ago. Too many Pigeons I was sure I hit hard in the chest in the right place flew off probably to drop out of sight but as most of my Pigeon, shooting is in the woods never to be seen again. Now it’s strictly head or neck shots (or leave it) and the birds drop from the trees straight down no problem. I am glad you have shown birds flying off with good chest shots to drop elsewhere because there are some CZcams channels that show chest shots (with sub 12ft/lbs) that seemingly never fail and the birds drop. I suspect the truth is the birds that fly off with chest shots either to drop further away or injured are not shown.
I know what you mean as i have struggled with it in the past, i know it can be done with lower powered air rifles as i've done it but its doing it consistently compared to a well placed head shot. Know a days i just keep an open mind and use the kill zone that i feel comfortable with at the time.

The farmer should have a net covering that feed area. I imagine the rats love it too. Some farmers ask for trouble.
I think the farm was sort of a work in progress and they were just adding new buildings etc when they could afford it but i believe the meal is all in silos now so the birds cant get near it.
Having just cut my grass I'm sat here 'fully conditioned' to enjoy this footage 'hot & sticky'.
A frustrating permission with nothing much keeping still but a good bag nonetheless.

Sorry to hear that the doves are protected in N. Ireland. They are really a good eating bird. One of my favorites.
Yeah i guess i'll never know what they taste like but saying that there's usually only 3 or 4 on any farm so its not like their a real pest or anything.

Yes or a couple of claymores would have been good though i don't think the shed would have faired too well.

Jackdaw's are clever, they will fly past my permanent hide and look in to see if I'm there 😆 but theirs always a daft one that doesn't look💥😁 atb muddy 👍😃
Yeah once i have shot a few they will start landing on the shed roof and look in through the vents to try and see if i'm there before coming inside.

A 12 gauge with #7 bird shot would only put a dent in that population. I can only imagine the rats he must have had. Good shooting though, thanks for the inclusion!
I have shot rats there in the past but never seen a huge amount of them think the cats are doing their job there.
You need to get the belt fed .22 cal full auto air rifle.
Years ago that would have been a dream but they now have full auto magazine fed air rifles, who would have thought.
Hi from sunny Cornwall David. I’ve become a big fan of your videos over the past 10 months or so and I’m getting into pigeon shooting over newly planted brassicas, Can you recommend a good hide netting please.
I usually use the Stealth Ghost 2 Ply Nets, most places will have them even ebay and you get them in different shades so just try and match the shade to the hedgerow's and cover in your area plus you can always add bits of grass and weeds to it to help it blend in after.

Me too, i was back at a dairy farm yesterday after jackdaws with the shot gun, hopefully it will be up on my other channel Nitro HV once i get it edited.
I really like the stock did you paint it or have a finish put on it when you had it blueprinted.

Yeah that was the old days before i got the Tactacam to film through the scope so had to get the camcorder Zoomed in on the bird before i could take the shot.

I think is was a net from Hunters Specialties that i bought many years ago, very light wight and easy to carry but would have moved about a bit in the wind.
