I have a 1990 Jackaroo I bought for 600 bucks yonks ago and it was an absolute unit. Still have it but retired it to the farm. Engine caught on fire a few years back and it’s now got every oil leak imaginable but it just won’t stop running. Sensational car.

Second gen Pajero short wheel base has to be in part 2. Dirt cheap and really capable off road
Had a 2000 XJ Cherokee sport for about 5 years, loved it!! 2 inch lift, 31 inch BFG all terrains and it was a beast in the bush. Was good stock also. 👍👍

I have had 4 jeeps perfect run with all of them only had to replace wheel bearings and uni joints never broke down in any of them too many people buy them with high k,s or buy Cherokee,s which is a bad Decision all the new vehicles made in the last 10 years are worse than any jeep could ever be , I know this because I run a workshop
Jeep XJ with the 4L inline 6 is bulletproof.

Come on mate, recommending an XJ Cherokee is akin to having someone deliberately give themselves particularly painful venereal disease, those things were woeful when new, and are far worse now.
They're popular in the US, probably catering to them by putting it no.1 in the vid. I had one. Don't get one.
@@patwalker8771 in Australia it's quite a terrible idea, doesn't have the aftermarket/OEM support like the US does. Just different markets
I own an X-Trail shown. It's offroad capability is breathtaking. I had to take it down some serious 4wd tracks unintentionally, and it coped brilliantly. It does wear out, however - currently up for some suspension expenses.
I can vouch for the 1996 Suzuki Sierra. I still have mine 23yrs later and not an issue. It's been around Australia on and off-road. Very capable, over-engineered little vehicle. Great city run-around also. If the Jimney is anything like it, I can understand why these are so popular.
Nice video! I’ve got a 1998 Challenger with the 3.0 V6 - so pretty closely related to the MK Triton - and I love it. 24 years old and still makes it look easy (completely stock apart from A/T tyres) 🤌🏼
The old Suzi SJ80 was a beauty bugger all power but damn near unstoppable, narrow and short you drive over obstacles no worries about grounding out.

Xj is so light with a lot of power for their size. 5 link front end flexes very well too.

I have a Jeep GC WJ 4.7L with quadra drive 2, its a great 4x4 for most bush and river trails. It only cost me 7k in 2015 with a fully reco engine.
T30 X-Trails turn into fwd only when you need AWD the most, it's an actual feature from the Factory meant to protect the gearbox when the going got tough, I'm not sure if it can be deleted or over ridden by the after market but if it could id gladly take a T30! but in the mean time may i suggest the either a Daihatsu Feroza or a Rocky be a better pick for the 2nd spot, i've seen a few start at 2k
Nissan T30s are pretty good but they also had a small cat very close to the exhaust manifold which was known to break apart and could be sucked back into the engine, the ceramic particles would damage cylinders and pistons with the result being excessive oil consumption.
Given the criteria for this list, the Ford Explorer really should be in contention. I know that there will be plenty who want to link it to the early model that had difficulty with Firestone tyres (which I don’t think was even available in Australia), but it was great on and off road, and there are many of them still available in very good condition.
I've got a 2nd gen 3 door Vitara and interior-wise it's much roomier than our Jimny, much more practical for being a daily as well since you have more quality of life amenities in the interior, tbh it's just a Jimny Deluxe, minus the front straight axle, but it does have a rear 4 link setup stock.
I reckon the heat is coming our of the used car market a bit. Seeing more price reductions on that online app.
Either buy it cheap and spent more on maintainence..or buy it a bit expensive and spent less on maintainence...your call 🤘🏻

my old cherokee took me to cape york and back without a single hic cup did the old tele track completely unassisted no winching or recovery needed

I made the mistake of buying a Jeep once. Only had it for a few months, & so many parts failed, that I was constantly sourcing parts while trying to keep it together long enough to sell it. There’s a reason they’re cheap, because they’re just shit, pure & simple.
90 series prados are the absolute winner for affordable off roaders. A v6 version in good condition can be had for under 7k.
Agreed!!! The older prados have to be one of the best value for money 4x4 wagons around!!!! Suprising given the badge on the front usually demands a premium
An old Kingswood or Falcon would have done the trick twenty years ago.....but they've gone up in price. 😎

Old Toyota Prado’s 90s
definitely the nm/np pajero, in petrol form can be had from as little as $3000 and a top spec diesel is only about 10-12k

I'd like to nominate the humble but awesome isuzu Mu. Only got them as grey imports in Aus, but I think they're awesome. Basically a pre facelift version of the uglier holden frontera

Dad has a triton and it is a beast and I’ve got a challenger which is the wagon model both are the 3.0L v6 petrol engine but if I could swap with him I definitely would
A Toyota RAV4 2nd Gen (facelift) is a great contender for the do-it-all X-Trail, maybe even more reliable.
How about the Daihatsu 4 Track?

Some other great off roaders are the Holden Adventra and the Ford Territory (you'll be surprised that they're actually quite capable)
You could also look at Euro cars if you'd like as they'd make great dailies and off road cars, such as a Mercedes ML or an X5... Although some of the things that go wrong on these are scary and expensive...
Exactly what I went for and never looked back, luckily it is street legal here.
quick tip on the jackaroo avoid the 2nd gen petrol autos like the plague. the transitions are underrated for the power output of the petrol engines. and for the diesels the transitions are fine but only get it if you know how to fix them. so in short only get a 2nd gen petrol manual (the first gen has none of these problems)
Can you petition the folks at Suzuki to bring the Jimny to Canada? My weekly tweets seem to be accomplishing naught =[
How is a Mitsubishi challenger
Nissan pathfinder r50 series 1 and 2 with are VG33E engine is super reliable and capable 4WD I had one for 24 years and did 934.000km before the transfer case gave up but that was my stupid mistake I miss the old girl, you can get them for around $5000 here in Australia.
Want an xj, but people either say they’re a load of garbage or really reliable, can someone just tell me which one?!
MK2 grand vitara. It’s a baby prado for a fraction of the price.
Those Jeeps are great off road but the ownership experience isn’t fun. The one that really flies under the radar here is the Holden Jackaroo.

1hd is a great engine, so is the 1hz in the 105 but slow as hell.
1st gen Kia Sportage and Sorento Bargain capable off-roaders.
My 3 door vitara cost me £375, $3000 sounds cazy high lol
No idea how did Covid managed to make old shitbox 4WD's so expensive but it did.

@@CathodeRayNipplez There are a few things going on - hard to work out - but I suspect many people can no longer afford their car loans, so are selling their 4WDs to people who can still afford them who do not already have one.

Nissan Terrano II....the mini Nissan Patrol
Holden RA Rodeo and RC Colorado (a rebadged Isuzu Dmax) should definitely be considered. Features the awesome 4jj1 motor in diesel, and some good low km examples are out there.
Only problem is they have torsion bar suspension but the 4jj motor is bullet proof
Couldn't find one in decent condition under 20k with good kms 6 months ago. Ended up with a 3l D22 Navara.
Jeeps are nice and comfy while you wait for the tow truck to arrive

Best bargain offroad vehicle is a Jeep, because they are worth nothing!
They are a source of endless problems, and their customers winge and cry on mass when they get repair quotes, only to fix one problem, then another fault occurs.
If you buy a Jeep in this day and age of available information, then you deserve to cry.
Dissapointing generic bunch of picks. For me the 7L Toureg with std air suspension and diff locks if a must in this list. Cheap and incredible offroads performance STD.
Surely the early to mid 2000's Ford Escape (aka Mazda Tribute) with the 3L V6 deserves a mention as a bargain 4x4

Jarckaroos and Fronteras are terrible off road! I have had mates and family with them and it was embarrassing where they would not go!

There is only one Off road racing champion is the Mitsubishi pajero. Dakar Rally proven and tested. Not the slow LandCruiser off-road style.

Jackaroos are crap
How come?
They are great - much lighter (and cheaper) than landcruisers - older jackaroos handle better than older landcruisers (I have or had both). Landcruisers are better for really heavy going 4wding but most people don't that, or not often, and the price is more petrol and bad handling for the rest of the time you drive it.
Totally agree, they have a bad reputation but no one can list anything specific (the guy in the video for example).
Most people don't realise they are completely Isuzu built.
I think the bad rep comes from the diesel motors and auto transmission. One diesel motor is reliable but slow. The other is unreliable or too complex because it's not common rail.
The auto transmission is also common in heaps of sedans like BMWs so it is too weak for a 4x4 and often breaks.
The 3.5L engine is the most powerful 6 cylinder I'm aware of until the 120 Prado petrol (auto only).
IMO the 3.5L with a manual gearbox is a beast and beats most IFS competition (Pajero/90 series) in performance and everything else in value.
They easily reach 300-500km before needing a rebuild if taken care of. This is a similar lifespan to many Toyota petrols which have a VERY similar design.
Issue is, it's hard to find one in good condition. They're thrashed by bogans and backpackers.
@@buckbeak0310 You are right - there are some combinations of gearbox and engine that need to be avoided. Any manual one with a petrol engine > 2.3 L should be ok - if not thrashed, as you say.
