How to make wooden door latches with wooden springs; in this video Mr. Chickadee will show you how to make lovely useful door latches out of domestic hardwoods using traditional hand tools and techniques.
We start with very hard and dry dogwood for our major components. Naturally elastic hickory makes the spring, and oak and ash wood finish out the pieces for the knob and axle rod.

Working with no more noise than absolutely nescessary. I like that, a lot.
WOW. I need this in my life. Amazing!
I have taught myself leatherworking, bookbinding, calligraphy and medieval illumination and cartography, mostly through trial and error...
... And whenever Mr. Chickadee puts out a new video, I always find myself put squarely back in my place.
No one man is master of every craft. However, some come really close to master of several. There is always room for improvement and learning in every craft shop.
That's damn cleaver! And, it works beautifully.
Watching how all those tools work makes them even more than just artifacts on my wall.
That dogwood brought memories rushing back. I love that stuff. Great gluts (wood splitting wedges). Good for any part that wears.
Almost (almost) as tough and dense as persimmon...
For real. Thumbs ALL the way up, if for no other reason than you didn't chop yours off in the first 2 minutes like I undoubtedly would have. Your channel is the best. Gotta love a little adrenaline rush while watching ASMR woodworking.
Dear Mr. Chickadee.
Simply fantastic again and as always! I love good quality videos without any talking at all. The pure sounds of nature and working make them very meditational/meditative. Your impressive craftsmanship is very satisfying to watch additionally.
Thanks a lot for making taping editing uploading and sharing.
Best regards luck and health.
All your videos are weirdly relaxing to watch. Thanks for sharing
Another good example of form & function from you, Mr. Chickadee.
That is one awesome door latching system. Great Job Marine. Your skills with wood and blade are inspiring to this old Army Vet. Thank you so much for sharing your gifts and creations with us.
Semper Fi, my military brother.

All this beauty stems from that initial renunciation of the base materialism the world presents to us. This is special stuff
Looks and works great! I love the sound of wood on wood for some reason!
you're not alone ;)
Same. Haven’t seen any of his videos but I hope he has already shown the pull string knob. Works just as well and adds a lock to the end result too. You just pull the string in from inside the house and people outside can’t lift the lever anymore.
Delightful watching something so intricate being made with hand tools - the only sounds being the razor-sharp blades and drills eating into the wood.
Really enjoy your videos
You're a young man with an old soul. Great work there, nice latch action.
we all have a primal desire for simpler, more authentic-to-nature lifestyle, but not everybody acts on it
Look at those dungarees! So modern!
Hickory dickory dock, Mr Chickadee built a Lock! He cut down a tree, divided it by three, planed it smooth, and used the pitch for glue. His Smith Shop is safe, no one will brave, that Marine from Hudson bay!
I feel like after building houses out of wood, you start to look at wood, tools and joinery in a different way than a cabinet maker would
traditional wood worker thinks more about finding a material thats as close the the finished product as possible. A modern worker can only make what his power tools can do, more about precision than hand working.
PERFECT, ONCE AGAIN. the way you work is like therapy, for the body and soul. I know it sounds corny, but I truly believe you are living a peaceful and for filling life!
Beautiful job as always Mr Chickadee! 👍👍👍👍
Have been watching your channel for years and always been wondering how you're so accurate with your axe! It's just incredible.
Another excellent video of a Master Craftsman. Thank you for sharing this with us. You made my day!
Love this! Thank you so much. There's some other channels that use these expensive machines to make this stuff, which to me only makes them braggarts, cuz most of us cannot afford such machines. Blessings to you and yours.
That’s pretty cool! Very satisfying to watch for me. Always a pleasure seeing your beautiful work.
It's so nicely done your cat could open the door kiddy kiddy .😁
Wow just started wood working you are awesome. Thanks you for ur vide.
Enjoyed the video Josh. Great job on the door latch. I guess your glad to have heat in your shop now. Y'all take care and God bless.
Super! The captions work a treat. Another satisfying video, thanks Josh.
You should make yourself a "shave-horse", (unless you already have and I've missed that video). Truly inspiring video, never thought of making a "wooden" spring for a door latch. As always, excellent video. Cheers :)
Love explanations in closed captions. If you add them to prior videos, let me know so I cam rewatch them
That’s awesome and then some. Especially since it will latch on its own when closing.
My Dad made a wooden latch for an A frame fort we had as kids built over an old swing set frame. It used rope to operate from the inside.
It was made like the barn latches he had growing up in Newfoundland.
Every time I see one of your videos I see a piece of art coming together.
Ingenious - let's share these ideas and raise our levels of awareness !
Excellent engineering
It's said that, even Saying "Thank You" is a Choice. "Thank You" for Taking the Time and Showing people what a True Artist & Craftsman Looks Like.
I just wanted to simply say, I'm Grateful.
God Bless You & Your Family.
wow !!! very nice! Thanks for inspiration.
Left hand and right hand sawing. Very impressive. I would give my right arm to be ambidextrous.
Dear Mr. Chickadee! 👍
Brass screw with lens head would be even nicer!
But you also have to leave the church in village and use what you have at your disposal!
Many thanks for uploading and sharing!
I always remember hearing WC Fields talking about my little chickadee but there is a much better chickadee these days for sure and that is Monsour chickadee!
Sweet. Snappy latch action 👍
Very nice and clever
Very good!
Your videos are not as often as I would like but always worth the wait. I realize it's a lot of effort to make to thank you for doing so.
Nice job.
Excellent !
Thank you for sharing this beautiful video with us.
Gotta love the Torx Head Screw , but, Hand tools and traditional wood fasteners are much more pleasurable!
You seem to blur the line between craftsmanship and art! Awesome!!!
Very interesting and informative. I enjoy these video tutorials that have no voice or music. It makes it easier to concentrate on the process of what you are doing! Thanks!
PARABÉNS Mr. .

PINDAMONHANGABA - BRASIL.
Wow thats great, will watch it again, more than once and I have somewhere to use this latch!
I most enjoy your videos; they show a skilled, inventive, God blessed craftsman.
Elegantly simple. A joy to watch you create.
Absolutely amazing craftsmanship
The 18th century handyman
And still, the technology works as well today as ever (in the proper mind and hands).
Brilliance as usual...still catching up on your older videos...lol
As always brilliant craftsmanship and ambidextrous on the tenon saw.
Looks like Matthias’s dads door knobs. I like the the spring.
That’s an awesome job Josh, thanks for sharing with us.👍👍
really love to watch you work so relaxing. love the things you make
WOW, absolutely amazing and awesome too!!! I love how it's spring action works and the basic precision that's got to be a big deal of it!!! So simple and yet... it's a great idea to be as simple as it is!!! Love these videos... learn so much from watching your videos!!! Seems like I remember you having a helper of sorts at one time... what happened to him and why have you not used him any since???!! I'm still amazed at how much of all the projects you and your family (wife) Late Happy Thanksgiving and Merry Christmas to you and your family... wishing you are still on Santa's "good boy"list!!!👏👏👏💯💯💯👍👍👍🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸👊🤙✌️
Brilliant design!
Very, very nice! Great job!
Love that dogwood! I made a carver's mallet out of some and I've been pounding with it for years and you can't really tell. I also used some for a plane iron adjusting hammer head and ditto. Nice color too! Great work on the latch. Smooth!
A hard wood that does not get enough credit as far as I'm concerned. Makes great arrows as well.
Once again, awesome video buddy!
Love the new format!
That is awesome, love that small draw knife, looks like it would be handy.
Really nice 👍
Pretty neat.
Good work
beautiful work!!! love to watch you
That latch makes thee most satisfying sound as it closes. So cool! Great job bud!
Mesmerizing stuff.
A Very nice latch! Even elegant!!
You've covered all the bases with tools, talent & tenacity.
How cool is that.. I didn't expect it to be self-locking 👍
We are waiting the book with all your projects ! :)
I'd buy that (with video references?) Or even an E-book with links?
I did wonder where you were going with that one, excellent!
Amazing craftsmanship/absolutely brilliant!!!! I love watching your vids, thank you for sharing : )
That’s tune! On style, man 🤙
Some damn fine carpentry
Beautiful, so satisfying to watch.

Wow, extremely impressed!
Very nice, that's a new one for me.
👍
Sir, we entered in wooden age!😀
Wonderfull to see you at work ... the komposituon of silence and meditation at work ... :)
Beautiful art work!
Sheer brilliance!
Most excellent....
You wisely used the spring wood for the latch instead of the summer wood. ☺
LOL
@Bulldozer my favorite but also a very annoying
Now that is very cool and practical.
Very clever! You are amazing
Great job and cool design.
Very cool.
Wonderful! In Ukraine, an old blacksmith handled an old door handle. Primitive lever and latch, worked for more than a hundred years.
It’s simply awesome !
Brilliant!
Watching your videos is like meditating for me, I sincerly enjoy them. Thank you
Just love what u do sir!!! 🇺🇸🙏🇺🇸
