The rule of a big thumb is as rarely you'll get a bike to 'the shop' as safer your budget will be kept and actually as longer your machine will serve you without, saying, surprises'. Thank you for sharing this great guidance.

Just FYI it's 3.9 LITERS, which equals 4.1 QUARTS. Not a big difference, but those are the specs from the manual. Manual also suggests 10W-30 visc, but does say other viscosities may be used depending on temperature in your area. I imagine 10W-30 would be best for most people, unless you're in a very hot or cold area/time of year.
    From the manual (section 3-10):
    OIL CAPACITY:
3.6 liters (3.8 US qt, 3.2 Imp qt) at draining
3.9 liters (4.1 US qt, 3.4 Imp qt) at filter change
4.7 liters (5.0 US qt, 4.1 Imp qt) at disassembly

Thanks! I provided the specific capacity language from the shop manual in a comment 6 years ago. Lol! Thanks for elaborating further. Enjoy the ride.

Chris thanks so much for doing the video all the way back in 2015...I just bought a used Honda CTX last week and am loving the bike but had basic maintenance questions so your video was exceptionally helpful. And thank especially for keeping it very elemental for us mechanically folk. If you ever have a few minutes I would love to ask you a few questions about the CTX and you seem like an excellent source. Do you still own yours?

Hey Man : ) I really dig your videos and how you break everything down especially all the tools needed. I haven't got a manual (cuz they're pretty spendy) and you have covered all the good stuff ! THANKS

Thanks! It's been a while since I had a chance to work on content. I have hours of video on hard drives from several motorcycle events.

@@Choirnrd1 well, I just picked up a 2014 ctx , so your oil change video is much appreciated

Just for clarification, it takes 3.9L (4.1 quarts) of oil to fill the CTX1300 with a filter replacement.

Thx for the precise and to the point vid. Have a question about your hand grips. What brand/model are they and are then compatible with heated grips. Cheers, Grant.

Kuryakyn ISO grips. I do not think they are compatible with the heated grips. www.kuryakyn.com/products/33/iso-grips

Hey Chris, thanks for the posting. I noticed you are using a 10W-40 oil, but the CTX manual recommends motor oil SAE standard: 10W-30. Is there a difference in the bikes performance.
    Thanks again for the videos.

Hella Anu, Going from 10W-40 to 10W-30, or the other way around, is not going to make much of a difference for me since I live in NC and our weather. The last number (40 or 30) represents the weight of the oil when hot, 40 is thicker than 30. Some folks use one oil in the summer months (10w-40) and the other in the winter months (10w-30). I have not used any other oil, so I can not compare the difference. I suspect I might not notice any difference, to be honest.

....Torque wrench really? There is a torque spec for every bolt on the bike when initially assembled.. Never used a torque wrench in 40 years with no issues, tight is tight. The torque wrench in my head and arm will suffice just fine for this job.

Did you have to replace the washer that goes to the drain plug when you changed the oil, and the filter each time? I am curious to know that.

sorry for the late reply. Yes, I would recommend it. Everyone has their own philosophy on this issue, so use your best judgement.

How often do you recommend doing this oil change and filter replacement.

    • @Choirnrd1
      @Choirnrd1  Před 4 lety

Great question. The manual recommends every 8,000 miles. However, I do it every 4,000 miles.

The only thing that threw me off on my first oil change was not knowing the valve cover popped off....lol Felt like an idiot....
