It's the old, old story, $2 fan screws up a $250 device. - I've had a few fans fail in these chargers, and once the bearing begin to squeal, there's not much that can save them. I use a Teflon fortified oil if the wear isn't excessive, or a smear of lithium grease if it's gone that far, but it's only buying time. New fans aren't hard to find, and they're not difficult replace. That said, if you can squeeze a few months more out of a dying fan, I'm all in favour of getting those extra miles.

The fan is likely some standard size and cheap. If lubricating doesn't help is should be easy to replace.

+1 these fans are almost always an off the shelf part and easy to replace.

Hi Tiit, I'm doing this mostly just for the fun of it. If all attempts to lubricate it fail, I'll just retrofit some other fan into or onto the case. Thanks for commenting :)

Hi Ron, Peel the label off the fan and you'll find a tiny little plastic split washer which retains the shaft into the plastic body of the fan. Peel up one side with a pick or sharp scribe and hold one of your fingers over the hole a bit because they like to jump across the room and head for the deepest shag carpet they can find! :) Then the fan comes right out for cleaning. A little 3-in-1 oil works wonders on them usually as long as there isn't any significant wear. When you push the washer back on kinda hold it in place with your fingertip and push down on one side of the washer and you can walk it back on. Happy charging! :)

      Hi Bill,
You are right about the split washer. Thanks for commenting :)

Have cleaned just a few :) Used to have a rack full of computers that pretty much had to be on 24x7 to service dial-up/email/web for an internet provider. We retrofit the cases so the fans would mount on the outside and ran a power plug out through one of the case slots. This way we could swap the fan out in about 2 minutes without having to shut anything down.
