How To Solve Volkswagen / Audi Misfire Issues!

- Today I dive into misfire problems with my MK5 Rabbit. I ended up taking the car apart, inspecting wiring, coil packs and spark plugs and solving the problem. This process could be used to inspect nearly all european vehicles that have similar problems, including the GTI, Jetta, Golf, Passat, A4, A5, A6, BMWs, and other Audis and Volkswagens. Ignition coils and plugs are nearly always the culprit when this problem occurs. Common fault codes are P0300, P0301, P0302, P0303, P0304, and so on. These indicate a misfire. I hope this video helps you fix your misfire and check engine light issues!

Thank you for posting this! I used this video to solve my issue on a Volkswagen Polo S 16V 2007 1.4L Petrol. The car was returning on-board diagnostic error code P0351 ("Ignition Coil A Primary/Secondary Circuit"). The car itself, when switched on, was shuddering. The issue was an engine misfire and the solution was to replace the ignition coil. I also replaced the spark plugs in all cylinders whilst I was fixing the issue. I am in the United Kingdom, so I bought the replacement parts via Euro Car Parts and saved myself quite a lot of money (as well as educating myself on how my car works and basic car maintenance).
Thank you!
Good effort!
A mechanic did me favour once, steamed cleaned the engine bay and all 4 plug wells were swimming. Surprised it ran at all!
Man, thank you for this. I followed your instructions and it worked in my VW Polo too.
The old spark plug was in bad shape and there was a lot of loose dirt/carbon just sitting around where the plug sits. Used a can of compressed air to clean out the cylinder and also cleaned the coil with electrical contact cleaner.
Car is running smooth as butter now. No more misfires!
Helpful, well put together video
I like you. Your introduction and explanation was great. 💙👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
My misfire issue was resolved, here is how.
So my issue was EPC lights come on when the car oil temp is around 90C, and it starts misfiring and again between 2 to 3k RPM there is that (prrrrrrrr) sound.
Cylinder 3 was misfiring all the time.
Check spark plus, they were clean
Change coils (Issue was still there)
Cleaned injectors (Issue was still there)
Check throttle body, it had an issue so I changed it (misfire was still there)
Found I had an oil leak, through the PCV and got it fixed (issue was still there)
Screw it, opened up the engine.
Issues I found.
Valve springs needed replacement
Camshaft was a little damaged
Piston rings were gone.
And I changed the timing tensioner while at it and fixed the headers.
After these changes, the car is driving fine.
My engine drove the same 150k KM, stage 1 tune REVO.
Tune did not add the issue, I track the car all the time.
I hope my input helps anyone desperate.
Jesus thats a lot of work. I hope I don't have to tear apart my engine.
@@granderondeproductions3286 no shit eh. I've gone through most of his checklist aside from that too.
Myn is weord runs good then moss fire shut off and on tins fine then will miss fire randomly different lengths of time maybe a wire short
Dude thank you you’re great help
I have the same issue except mine starts making noise between 1.5-2k (usually) today all of a sudden power dropped and started driving extremely rough with epc/check engine light on and I had to limp all the way home. I hope my issue can be fixed by just replacing coil packs. 2015 golf
I have a 2006 Audi A3 2.0T TFSI
The upgraded R8 coil packs and 3 or 4-prong Bosch spark plugs (gapped at 30/1000) are a good cheap fix to this way too common problem.
Other relatively inexpensive upgrades you can do yourself that ARE 100% related to this issue are:
- USE A FUEL CLEANER EVERY OTHER FILL UP (these engines DO burn oil - so USE SYN and change your oil)
- Add a cold-air intake (deletes the problematic engine cover w/ integrated air filter) - and clean your MAF when you do it.
- Do the Cam follower replacement (could be causing a cam issue OR a fuel pressure issue - or both) and/OR the high-pressure fuel pump maintenance
- ALTERNATOR replacement (causing a power issue)
After I reed I have to ask who in hell want to buy these cars?
Appreciate your experiences as we too have VW cars - Tiguan 2.0 ltr auto and Polo 1.0 ltr 3 cylinder. What code reader do you have?
Awesome video, thanks!
Very good video, you were very good at explaining everything you did and why I sub'ed you for sure my passat is doing the exact same thing. Ill see tomorrow or sat. If that will help. Thanks
Best of luck!
Thanks!! It helped me a lot
Hello bub,2 question how long was you driving around like that an what did u use to clean your plugs with..thanks
I don't suppose you or anyone might have a link for a replacement coil pack wiring harness? Working on my dad's 07 Jetta, replaced the coil packs, spark plugs and even the connector plugs from the wiring harness. I'm guessing my connections for the new plugs aren't the best, I still have no spark in cylinder 4. Other than replacing the entire coil pack harness or taking to the dealer I've changed everything. Any advice is greatly appreciated!
Great video the exact same thing was happening to my vw cc . One of my coils was bad . Thank you for the info
Did you fixed it? Cuz going through the same process with my cc
@@entertaningvideo5783same 😂
I did What the video told me and went from P0301 to P0300??? What could cause this?
The valve cover gasket is what keeps the plug holes dry. Change it. A lot of people have this issue.
I've changed everything already, Coils, Sparkplugs, rewired new coil clips since I had broken ones, changed new MaF Sensor not cheap, cleaned filter, made sure intake box is sealed properly and I still have codes P0300, P0303, P0352, P0353, I'm so stressed out this is my only car to work and for winter I need to fix it but audi or mechanic will charge me up the ass, I'd rather do it my self! One thing I will mention is when I rewired the coil harness where all the ignition Coil wired are tucked in (harness cover) I broke that trying to open it so yes even tho my wired are rewired right my harness is open and wires are exposed, did order the new harness cover, could that be the cause of all these codes? Or did I connect something wrong I doubt it Im sure I rewired everything right! My only option right now is to order a new fuel filter.. I need help guys 😒, By the way this is for my 2010 Audi A4 Quattro 2.0t I4 🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️
I have not changed the valve cover gasket tho 🤔
@@S4_QUATTROPOWER just pay the money and take it to a Audi specialist if you cant sort it
@@S4_QUATTROPOWER id give up bro. Those cars are unreliable endless money pits. Beautiful cars but not worth the troubles. Especially if repairs arent quite in your budget. Learned that the hard way haha! Absolutely loved my 2010 cls, but had to give her up for a slight downgrade (so i thought). I now have a vw cc r line, so i guess i still didnt learn my lesson..? 😂😂 Shes currently misfiring on all cylinders. Just dropped her off at the shop, fingers crossed for the best. But unfortunately after this cars toast im converting to JDM or american muscle. These euros be making it hard to be loyal.
@@joheewrx5278 I know bro my friend fixed it he's a mechanic, but I'm just gonna trade it in for a different car honestly not worth the money I put in to it the car keeps getting de valued and it's not paid off yet
You would be amazed at all of the systems that are adversely effected by bad coil packs. Those suckers are constant battle on my 2013 vw cc 2.0 tsi.. I think next I'm going to check the coil pack wire harness for cracks and shorts.
Same car and same issue 🫡
Any recommendations?
Thank you for this helpful video. Actually I have VW Touareg and suddenly check engine light start flashing while car in Park position (For your information I did not drive the car for more than two months).
When I use Car diagnostic tool OBD2, result code P0306. But when I start car next day check engine light off but when I use OBD2 pending code still there. Can you tell me please what shall I do?
electronic mouse blockers give off high pitch sounds that keep mice away, even the cat will not climb on the car, I have them on my truck and car, they work great
Man this is really important informative thank you my Volkswagen Golf 2.0 recently was overfilled way over filled with oil and now I'm having misfiring is it possible that maybe my coils are drenched in oil
why don’t u check
My missfire issue seems to be the throttle body. The idiot who owned it b4 (ex wife n her sister) took the fuse out because it made a whine noise. Wires N coil looks great. Idles rough but when more air is added the throttle stays open easier. I replaced plugs with NGK iridium. Oil change n all that. So Yea. U have same issue with 1.8t there u go.
🤣🤣🤣🤣wow
Here i am with a misfire that powerful it jerks the car yet no engine codes. Good luck to me 😂 is the "stuttering" referring to the "jerking" im experiencing? Feels like rhe car is tryna throw me out the door! Audi tt mk1 225 BAM. Replaced all ignition coils with OEM.
I had the exact same issue nice and all I replaced all coils and spark plugs and still having issues ?
Did you make sure there wasn't any moisture in the plug area?
Brilliant video! Just had a misfire in cylinder 3 so will give this a try first before taking to the garage.
Awesome video and really well explained thanks!
Glad it helped, good luck getting your car sorted out!
What did it end up being if you remember? I have a 2002 throwing thus code and I've done everything o can to fix it
same codes would've been useless to me p0300 and p0304 on 2.0L new coil, plugs and wires (no signs of wire damage car kept in underground)
changed the power relay to an updated one fixed a few issues but still have misfire when i gun it and less prevalent as before i would step on the gas it would throw engine light on.
Coked valves
I get a 301 cylinder 1 misfire on cold startups and when low on fuel. Radio if running on startup gets a buzzing static sound. Any thoughts?
I'm having same issue when my fuel lite came on o top of that I had to jump my aunt ride ......then got p0301 cylinder 1 misfire. ....
P0300 and P0304 on mine changed plugs and coils, compression check was good, fuel injector is now prime suspect, changed out the filter, was very clogged up, next move now is fuel injector replacement and carbon clean, injector/carbon build up problems are both synergetic together a lot of times from what I’ve read up on, hopefully this helps resolve if not at least help with my dancing engine
My VW Passat CC is misfiring. Pls I need ur advice on how to fix the issue..
Did you try what I showed in this video?
I have problem of my car 2006 2.0 passat fsi just shut down while I driving not start again
Thanks
Dude! I did all this. No codes! Changed the MAF sensor too! 2004 running strong in 2022!
Love to hear it!
I had similar symptoms, with my MK5 GTI, it was one of the coils gone. I heard it is pretty common problem.
Marton Bardos man having this problem today hopefully it’s just that😐
@@andycarrillo4405 in my case the check engine was flashing, the engine sounded bad when trying to accelerate and at times the unburnt fuel from the non working cylinder ignited in the exhaust, making popping sounds. Luckily I was 10 miles from a bigger city, where I found the part and continued my trip
Andy Carrillo yeah I feel you I got the same exact problem. I heard it’s my cylinder or it’s my throttle body
@@mbardos I have the exact same problem. Will get my coil tomorrow, hopefully will fix the problem. Been driving like a nanny for the last day
Did you have misfire/epc light here and there and then all of a sudden the lose power and won't go back to normal? My current issue lol
Also - change the fuel filter if your car is over 8 years old.
Replacing coils and if that doesn't solve it the Audi's getting sold 😂 euro cars are such a pain in the ass to own
Damn the mice nests!!! - 👊
Hey guy. I got a 2.0 2004 Jetta and I have the flashing cel. My coil pack is one of those aftermarket ones. My plugs and plug wires were all replaced the same time that the coil was. The misfire started very random and would do like you were explaining at the beginning of the video Now it's pretty much constant but it's only cylinder 4 every other cylinder plug and plug wire fires as expected I have been thinking it's this garbage Chinese coil pack but I've other people that's told me it's the cam sensor the RPM sensor the crankshaft speed sensor I don't understand how any of those things cooikd effect just 1 cylinder
My neighbor whom is a mechanic did a valve cover gasket on my 2008 audi a3 and everything was running fine.. Thats until I decided to high pressure wash my engine ( have done this before without an issue.) all of a sudden I'm getting the exact same issue and codes cylinder 1 misfire with shaking and rough idle. I'm assuming somehow it must have went through the seal on cylinder one.. The reason I washed the engine was because I was getting oil leak from some of my valve cover bolts and wanted to see exactly which ones are the main problem since these bolts are damn expensive at $8.99 and there are 11 of em.. So im definitely gonna have to take the coil pack out and dry everything tomorrow in some day light.. Or hopefully it will dry out over night somehow..Thanks for video..
Best of luck with it!
It could be the coil is gone on that cylinder, common problem
Marton Bardos figured it out the same day.. took out all my spark plugs out and one of em was completely wet and so was that same cylinder so I dried it out.. have no idea how it got that wet if I didn’t spray water directly on my spark plugs but I guess it was lesson learned .. sorry I forgot to update that it’s been fixed. Forgot that I had posted it.. thanks for your input tho..
Yeh I never pressure wash inside the engine bay, just brush on a degreaser leave it sit for a few minutes then was it off with a low pressure hose. I also wrap some plastic bags around anything i do not want to get wet under the bonnet. Pressure washing your engine can be an expensive mistake mate, will force the water past the seals. I have been working in car diagnostics for 20 years and have seen so many people use pressure washers on their engines and caused so many problems.
@@boastyy Interesting! Is the same warning relevant to steam cleaning?
I'm confused, in the UK that car is a mk5 golf , I have never seen a 5.cylinder golf. Can anyone elaborate pls
In America, they sold gasoline 2.5L 5 cylinder engine for Passat. Golf ,Jetta .
I just had a storm in my town

You need to put oem coils get them from dealer ship you got shitty coils
You reset the code?
@@austincantrell994 why would that have anything to do with it reset the codes if it was good the code go away he bought cheap coils bottom line
Not true.. I have cheap coils in mine and no codes were thrown. It really doesn't matter much.
He failed to mention if he reset the codes. That is why I asked.
Check crankshaft position sensor, cat and if not it's bad cheaply made coils. Only oem seem to work
Just fix the root of the problem and get new coils, you will be better off that way.
That certainly is the best way to do it
Leaking valve cover gasket
any recommendation for everything works great then it doesn't, then it works great again.. then it doesn't..
So, hopefully with that said, i didnt check my pcv valve or the valve cover gasket. Cuz you know if you dont want it to happen. It wont
I have a 2010 GTI cobb stage 2. I've got a CAI, and full exhaust. I replaced coilpacks and sparks (gapped correctly) and i get random misfires only under load. Cannot figure out the issue, anyone got any ideas?
Andrew Scott did you manage to fix it?
Do a compression check on all cyls and that will tell ya.
I believe that was mouse pee, not water😂
Hahahah if I hadn't just pressure washed the engine bay recently I'd be inclined to believe you!
I have a 2012 VW cc 2.0 t and it won’t start . Getting codes p0300 p0301 p0302 p0303 p0304 p2015 help! My wife is staring at me with her goofy eyes 👀
P2015 is a failed intake manifold position sensor.
All those other codes are misfire codes.
You need a new intake manifold
Sam yeah I replaced all 4 coils and plugs , new battery still wouldn’t start! I sent it to the garage and they called back and said engine was seized no charge!!!!! It was cranking fine before it left now I get it back seized??? I’m F$&ked!!!!!!!🤬
@@youtubebitchcenter1463 That's absolute nonsense...! Where's the logic in that!?
How did they manage to seize it?
Sam They said they didn’t do it , it came in like that. They told my wife over the phone that the timing was off that’s why it wouldn’t start! And all my gas ( at least almost half a tank was gone ) but they claimed to never have got it started?!?! And when I got it back I pulled the spark plugs and one was smashed????
Put your VIN into their site and see if you're eligible.
So, what about the chewed harness? You just let it ride?
If I remember correctly it was just the sheathing of the harness that was damaged! It's been a while though
Replaced coil packs and spark plugs and same shit
its throwing codes cause thats all vw audi products do is constantly break down
I drove my Passat home on 2cyl yesterday
Was it a v6 mine just died has no power and eont hardly move sounds super quite , I think the coil packs went out
for every dead cyl you loose 1/2 of another good cyl
My Audi dose the same thing but only when is in drive i hit the gas and it starts to stutter and if i push it past 2000 rpms it just starts to stutter i did change the pcv valve but i can hear a leak under it still i will check again if i installed it properly hope some one can guide me here 😭
Have you checked the coil packs?
Check coil packs. A bad coil pack typically misfires at high engine speeds.
I've changed both plugs and ignition coils on my Audi tts mk2 and is still misfires and stutters?
@@colinmoore2359 did u figure it out mine just started doin this , it will rev in neutral but seem sluggish and when in drive it will not move , just sits there and stutters
