    A wee correction: Carbon fibre can be and is used for speaker domes however is is comparatively more difficult to work with then other materials. It can be found woven; in a composite with other materials or as a coating to paper. For the time being, in my opinion there are more reliable materials to build speaker cones from however, when done right, there's nothing stopping carbon fibre domes from working very well.
    Also I'll drop a recommendation to go alongside those mentioned in the videos. I currently use a pair of Presonus Eris E4.5s. A little bit more pricy (seen them at $150 US) but worth it in my opinion. They work double duty as an entry pair of studio monitors and regular speakers.
    They're perfect what I need them for. PC speakers with the capability to hold their own when I'm doing my occasional bit of music work. You can certainly do a lot worse for your money.

    I have had the Lepai 2020 and the Micca speakers for over a year now and I LOVE THEM. I have tried several 2.1 systems under 100 bucks in the past and none of them stack up to this. Make sure you get a spool of speaker wire and male to male AUX cable to plug into your computer. (those dont cost that much) You should be up and running with a dope sound system for under 90 bucks.

      +Evan Buschor STAY AWAY from the Lepai 2020 amplifiers. The have really bad quality control issues and bad internals. I would recommend sourcing a used vintage Integrated amplifier instead. It will sound better and last longer.

      ***** Nah listen to me. For the same £15 more I got a used Kenwood amplifier that is more powerful, sounds better and is built better.
      Lepai 2020s are wholesale amps so quality control is an undeniable issue. Another thing I don't like about the lepai amps is the terrible tone control.

    Personally, I think that if you want a decent setup for cheap, hit up goodwill and thrift shops. I have found literally dozens of nice receivers that have plenty of power, I picked up a Onkyo 75WX6 receiver for $15 and it works fantastic powering my Pioneer SP-BS21-LR (highly recommend btw). I also grabbed a Pioneer SW-8MK2 at the same time for $10, I got lucky there, though. I spent a total of $65 on my setup, and it sounds absolutely amazing. I highly recommend going out and checking goodwill, or other thrift shops before buying brand new. Or yardsales. Or craigslist, but there usually aren't very many good deals to be had on there.

I was considering purchasing speakers, possibly 4.5 - 6 inch ones, but am I hearing that you would recommend buying headphones instead? The Scarlett 2i2, which is what I just bought, does have a 1/4" jack on the front, would that be better to use than the stereo outputs on the back?

      +gloriouspopeman tom In that price range there are many more additional factors than below 100. Like personal preference, tonality, bass-range, etc.
      And in that pricerange i would recommend you HAVE to get into a studio or something, and listen to a few.
      If its for your PC table, get a look into Adam, KRK, Genelec, etc. Studio monitors (max 6 Inch bass-membrane).
      If its for your Home cinema (which i would also recommend if you use an speaker Amp / Receiver): KEF C/Q series (i like the Q-300 REALLY much. warm very deep sounding, very nice soundstage), Dali Zensor, Canton, Magnat, etc.

      +gloriouspopeman tom Instead of buying new speakers have you considered just keeping the boxes and upgrading the internals instead? New tweeters, crossovers, and woofers. I have an old set of walnut veneered Relistic Minimus 7's I got from a yard sale for $5 over the summer. I'm gonna replace the trashed 4" woofers with newer units and the pathetic caps with better stuff once I have the money. That and I got a set of old Zenith Allegro 4000's for free from someone I helped out. They're not known for being the greatest speakers by audio lovers, but hey they're free, in decent shape and need a little tlc. :)

    I own a few pairs of speaker and am looking for more, I'm an addict and need to fill the craving. LOL I own the Micca's small ones and they just friggen rock. I 've also got the micca center channel, it went on sale from amazon so cheap I couldn't pass it up. I've got a small pair of used JBL's from Ebay seller and for what I thought they'd be for what they are, very small three and a half inch woofer that doesn't impress, I think the micca's for a fifth the price sound almost as good. Then I've got the bose soundlink mini series 1, besides crap blue tooth on it and it always needing to be hardwired it just thumbe for it's footprint. Just picked up a UE Boom from costco last night their on sale right now for a hundred bucks plus tax and free shipping, so I will see how that works and pair it my bose mini sometimes for some just smashing sound. Note the soundlink mini has a delay to it of about a second so everything when a splitter is used echoe's, but for slower softer acoustic songs it actually sounds nice and doesn't bother me much. Then I got the bose 301's series v for my home theater and they sound pretty good for watching tv but lack and I will be adding a sub to those soon for movies and more depth. The rest of my speakers are junk and not worth mentioning even though some sound good, their just pieces off of boom boxes, mini systems and cheap surround systems I've pulled from dumpsters when I needed speakers and had nothing else. Go with the Micca's and the lepai amp you will be happy if you have nothing and that will run you about fifty bucks if you get the 20 x 20 lepai, which is what I got from my Dad. ps don't forget to check out the Mackie CR3 on amazon they rate well but take up space and then there's the Bose Companion 2 for 99. dollars also which will take up less space and sound decent.

    Carbon fiber woofers absolutely do "work". So does aluminum, glass, diamond...etc. If you mean they "wouldn't work" at that price range, I'd absolutely agree. I doubt those speakers use real carbon fiber. Carbon fiber and kevlar composite woofers have been used in speakers since at least the 1980's though, with patents going back to the 70's.

    • @AJBtheSuede
      @AJBtheSuede Před 8 lety +2

      +Tyler Chilton -BS called. The problem with carbon fiber is the breakup modes, and for a 3" high-angle cone that would be at ~7-9kHz. Not exactly a problem when mated to a .75-1.00" tweeter. Much less of a problem than most metal cone speakers.
      Otherwise I don't see what your comment is based on - the cone usually amounts to about 2-6% of the BOM cost of a loudspeaker unit, and zero added cost in handling/mounting. A CF cone in in the 3-5" range costs about 0,30-1.50 USD more per unit in production (than the cheapest available paper cones, minimum 1000pcs ordered). The glues used for mating the cone to the VC, spider and the surround are different, but not more expensive.

    Hi guys, thanks for your video. i have a question. i have a logitech z5500 speaker set and using it for 7 years. you know that it is a bass heavy set. although i cant use it very much now, i want to change the satellites. the satellites are giving less & less sound and thus bass is getting overpowered. can i use some low price active speakers to replace the satellites? do you think this will help me getting more mid & high frequency sounds? if so can you recommend something within 100-120 dollars? thanks in advance. :)

    That first advice, about getting headphones first is BS. If you want to fuck your ears and end up deaf at 40 then yes, forget speakers and stick to headphones.

    • @ramsfan6237
      @ramsfan6237 Před 8 lety +16

      lol headphones don't kill people and headphones don't hurt your ears any more or less than speakers as long as you don't listen to ear bleeding volumes. speakers can do the same amount of damage if not more. stand next too speakers at a concert.

      +Tyler Chilton But using headphones squishes my hair and also could lead to premature hair loss ,that's the main reason I use speakers at home.

    I previously owned a Logitech z2300 set witch I didn't really like (lots of bass poor satellites)and I use now a Yamaha amp with a floorstanding speaker system right now, but I need something smaller to fit on my desk, how shitty do you think the new Logitech Z623 is in comparison with the old z2300? The compact studio speakers don't play anything under 50-70Hz :(. I feel like I want something what doesn't exist :), any ideas?

      rsidney23 your PC would plug input to an amplifier. then your amp would have outputs to speakers and subwoofer. most cheap amps do not have a sub out, just search for a good amp with sub out if you plan to add a sub down the line

    Guys, I have an old pair of beats studio headphones and really love the way they "separate" the sounds. Usually on speakers they sound all mashed up it's like they are blended together. Although I haven't really tried a lot of brands or some "pro" stuff, I'd really like to replicate the sound of the Beats studio on a speaker system.
    This is for music by the way. I like listening to all kinds of genres from classical to dubstep, etc. Any advice?

    I got a used Bose Acoustimass II 2.1 speaker set and a Trio-Kenwood KA-30 amplifier. This cost me about £100. The speakers are from the 90s and the amplifier from the 70s but they sound better than almost anything you can get for £100 new. Plus my speakers and amp are both built like a tank. The amp alone has withstood over 40 years of use and still works fine.

    I'd love to hear if you guys have any recommendations for small speakers. I have an old early/mid 1990s 2.1 Bose Acoustimass set (back when Bose was actually good) and they sound absolutely phenomenal. Little 3 inch cubes that sound like they are 5 feet tall. The original sub is starting to go out and I haven't been able to find anything that remotely matches it in quality/size.

    I have the MS16 speakers and they have a high noise floor that comes from the built-in microphone amplifier. They still sound good, but if you're working with the speakers very close (i.e., within about 3 feet) the hum is a little annoying.

I also had to replace the sub woofer with a Dayton Audio DS175-8 due to foam rot. These are now the best sounding pair of computer speakers I own.
