Harry Redknapp savages West Ham fan for criticising a teenage Frank Lampard

The venue is a Fans Forum in East London back in 1996. Frank Lampard was just 18 years old. Harry Redknapp was his manager at West Ham United. And the Hammers boss was adamant that Frank would go to the very top when a disgruntled fan told him Lampard was not as good at Scott Canham or Matt Holland.
"I did not want to say this in front of him. But he will go right to the very top. Right to the very top," insisted Redknapp.
"There ain't no doubt about that in my opinion. Because he's got everything that's needed to become a top class midfield player. His attitude is first class. he's got strength. He can play. he can pass it. And he can score goals."
When challenged by the fan who criticised him for letting Scot Canham and Matt Holland leave the club, Harry repeated his conviction when he said: "I'm telling you I couldn't feel more strong how I feel about him."
While Lampard looked on embarrassed by the criticism, chief executive Peter Storrie weighed in to support his manager saying: "It's not just Harry's opinion. I don't know if many of you knew but during the European champions in the summer England decided to take several young players from all over the country to various training sessions. When terry Venables came to the ground to speak to Harry and I not too long ago, he said there were two outstanding youngsters of all the ones he had. That was Frank and Rio (Ferdinand). "
It was a lively evening in East London with Iain Dowie and Mark Rieper also on the top table. Dowie, then a Hammers striker and PFA representative, gave a good account of himself. An early indication that he was suited to management and dealing with the media. Great sense of humour.
Some interesting comments too on Hugo Porfiorio.

+Matthew Lofthouse This is the same Redknapp who left Bale in the reserves for ages, tried to sell him to Forest on the cheap, and only gave him a chance during an injury crisis, whereupon Bale almost immediately showed his class.

      @michaeljenkins7024 Před 8 lety +1

***** No. He played him because of the injury crisis. He spotted nothing. He tried to flog him to Forest not long before he was finally forced to give him a chance.

***** Mate, he would have seen him every day in training. I'm not giving Redknapp any credit for noticing that Bale's quick! He didn't rate him, tried to flog him on the cheap, and only gave him a run in the team because injuries meant he had no other choice. At which point Bale made himself undroppable. Redknapp had nothing to do with Bale's success.

Redknapp is a fantastic manager who did a great job with Bournemouth, West Ham and Portsmouth. He was the man who led Spurs into the Champions League after years of missing out on a CL spot. He built up what on paper was a great squad at QPR but the players with their big pay-packets didn't perform 100% and I'm sure he'll take on another club and win another trophy with them!

His predictions about the other two were pretty accurate.
Matt Holland "Might bounce back" - Well he did go on to have a very solid career 200+ Premier league appearances and he also represented Ireland at the 2002 WC
Scott Canham "There will be no comparison between what Frank Lampard will achieve in football and what Scot Canham will achieve " - Basically spent the rest of his career bouncing around between lower league & Non-League clubs.

the guy probably biffed because he thought Harry was just favoritism. Harry was right to say he got his own opinion. Frankly, I really didn't think he was that good at west ham. But, when he came to Chelsea, Mourinho made him a midfield goal-scoring machine.

I was a season ticket holder during this period, went to a lot of away games, friendlies and youth games. The abuse that Lampard Jnr got during his playing time has been over blown and exaggerated. Yes there were fans who thought he was only making the team because of his Dad and Uncle but it certainly wasn't all of the supporters or even the majority. It all started with Redknapp losing the support of the fans because he was buying some absolute crap and wasting transfer cash and then making a joke of it as if it was the players fault and not his. For every decent player he was buying he was buying 2 or 3 that were failing and we were struggling in the league. When he and Lampard Snr were sacked was when the Lampard Jnr thing really kicked off.

West Ham were lucky to have Lampard in the first place. And only had him because of his dad and uncle. What did Hammers expect to happen when they sacked Harry and Frank snr. Especially as they are a selling club and don’t know how to keep or look after talent. I knew many hammers players and did business with the club for years. Even sponsored a match back in the 90s and there was zero loyalty to me and my company when they took a bung from a rival. Since Harry and Peter Storrie left the club have lacked style and dignity. Sad because I used to drink with Bobby Moore and once had respect for the club even though I’m from Manchester and they are not my team.

Frank JNR was a decent player. But he didn't play that well when he was at West Ham. He got fed up with people saying he was only in the team because his uncle was the manager and his father was the assistant manager. When Harry and Frank SNR were sacked by the club, Frank JNR could have stayed and proved that he was in the team on merit. However he couldn't wait to leave as soon as 2 if his closest family members went. Lampard didn't really do much at Chelsea until Abramovich took over and then he became surrounded by better players. I don't begrudge Frank JNR any of his successes in the game at all but some of the things he has said over years about west ham have just been wrong and ridiculous and at times spiteful. Good player but not a great player

OLI PRJ that’s clearly not true as Terry Venables recognised when he was England manager. And Chelsea paid a fortune for him based on his brilliant form for West Ham. I’m a Man Utd fan and think it was scandalous Scholes was left out of the England side in favour of Lampard. But don’t try to re write history by claiming he was not a great player. Lampard Snr was treated badly by West Ham so it was no surprise his son would leave for a bigger and better club. Now the Hammers have lost their soul and their spiritual home and desperately miss these days when they had a decent club. It’s a shame because West Ham have great fans.

@@VISIONSPORTTV sorry what's not true? I'm not trying to re write any history? Venables only saw him when he trained with England when they took that group of youngsters with them. Chelsea probably bought him on the back of one good performance. Let's not forget Ken Bates would chuck money away on players like Chris Sutton (disaster signing) so west ham were never going to turn down 11milion at the time. My opinion is he was good but not great. Opinion that's all. Scholes and Gerrard were better I agree on that.

OLI PRJ No problem my friend. Football is all about opinions. I do remember Lampard at West Ham quite well because we filmed all their matches in those days and I thought he was always decent for them. He obviously got better at Chelsea. But 11M was a huge fee back then so he must have been a pretty good player. As for my old friend Ken Bates he was quite miserly with his money and he was unlucky with Sutton because he was amazing first at Norwich and then won the premier league in the famous SAS strikeforce for Blackburn. I sat next to Sutton on a trip back from a European match with Norwich in Holland when he was just starting to score loads of goals - John Gubba

He was spiteful towards West Ham, mainly though I think it was because he was hurt that his dad got the sack along with Harry and the fans had never taken to him the way they did with Rio. If you imagine being a kid who has been West Ham all your life to see the fans reject you and the owner sack your uncle and dad it’s not that surprising to lash out a bit. Frank took it too far though and the fans took it too far. I’d like to think with the passage of time that Frank regrets some of the comments and the wind up badge kissing he used to do when back at Upton Park. He had a better career away from West Ham than he ever could have done with us and that’s a sad reflection on the club but he also got lucky because Chelsea were on the verge of bankruptcy before Abramovich rocked up.

Regardless of this video and all Lampards achievements he was the most overrated English player of his generation. Without Abramovich’s superstar foreigners he was good but nothing more. A complete ghost for England when playing with average players which showed how being at Chelsea flattered him. Was overhyped because of the lack of quality English players and benefitted from the public buying the whole ‘Gerrard - Lampard cant play together’ bollocks. Ballon D’or runner up?? Dont make me laugh!!!
