- As Israeli bombardment worsens in #Gaza and more #Palestinians are killed, we keep noticing the increasing trend in U.S. headlines: the passive voice. This is not the first time mainstream news organizations use evasive language when covering Israeli aggression against Palestinian civilians. The basic rules of reporting, the who, what, when, where, why and how, don’t seem to apply when covering this story - instead serving to provide cover for U.S. and Israeli culpability. In this new series, Backspace’s Sana Saeed looks at the words we use - and don’t use - when it comes to AJ+’s coverage of the Israeli occupation and why these choices are made.

If 'hamas' is supposedly responsible of strategic killing of thousands of Palestinian children then israel and idf if responsible for what happened on the 7 of October and hamas bears no responsibility of that. Killing of more than 20,000 civilians is no longer justifiable with 'hamas started it' which AGAIN go and learn the history first to know. And I haven't even began talking of Westbank yet. So you can take your Hamas record and play it somewhere else because we're are done with your hypocrisy.

The IDDF General Avraham Yoffe laughs, as he sends 10 men on the hill to capture it. There is gunfire for a minute or so and then every-thing goes silent but they hear the same faint voice; "one Palestinian is better than a hundred of yours!".
Annoyed, the IDDF General sends hundred men to capture that hill. There is intense gunfire and bombs going off for around ten minutes and then everything goes eeriley silent again. Suddenly, that same voice yell out again: "one Palestinian is better than a thousand of yours!"
Enraged and infuriated, General Yoffe sends a thousand men, accompanied with tanks, artillery, mortar teams and strictly orders them not to return until the hill is captured. For around half an hour all hell loose breaks, bombs, explosions, gunfire, shelling, screams of death all around and every corner and then, it goes silent again. One IDDF soldier crawls back, severely wounded, brusied and battered and before the General could say anything, the soldier says "Do not send more troops General, it's a trap! There's two of them in there"

The New York headline was something else. The amount of effort they put in that headline just not to say the clear is just disgusting. It is so deliberate that they took time for it, and came up with this word salad that does not make any sense for a headline.

History shows that every single extremist attack on Israel is met with a severe response where Palestinians lose land and many lives. I've heard a lot of Gazans say two particular words: martyr, occupiers. Martyr for what cause? Hamas' mission to kill all Jews? Occupiers? There are 14 million people in Palestine/Israel. 7 million call themselves Palestinians. 7 million call themselves Jews. They are 99.999% identical genetically because they originiate from the same place. If Hamas keep up their suicidal campaign, their "success" will be the eviction of all Palestinians ousted from the their birthright. There are many pictures of Palestinian and Jewish children where you can't tell what their "religion" is... why can't they go to the same school? Am I idealistic? Yes. But, God/Allah save us... with external actors like Putin and Khameini pushing us towards WWIII... we need to find a solution that saves every person on the planet... regardless of culture/religion. One thing that stood out to me is that, in the beginning of that NYT article,
Al-Aqsa Hospital was referred to as "Al-Aqsa Martyrs" hospital,
a direct callback to the suicide bombers of the Al-Aqsa Martyr's Brigade of the Second Intifada.
Whatever the hospital was named for, be it the mosque that's the third-holiest site in all of Islam or in memory of the second Intifada,
that reads like another attempt to plant the idea in Western minds that "there are no civilians in Gaza", even within hospitals.
Western media constantly fails to state a very important fact: the citizens of Gaza are not allowed to leave, are not allowed to reunite with family members in other areas of the Occupied Territories (be it Jerusalem or the West Bank), and are held in by a fence.
They have no choice in being associated with Hamas, and it's been nearly 18 years since the last election.
The only time I've seen any reference to the fact that Palestinians living in Gaza are not allowed to leave was in Masha Gessen's article in the New Yorker.
