      While it sucks that you had those bad experiences, I'm glad you've got something that works well now! One note I would make is this: if anyone asks you where they can get a good pre-built because they don't want to build it themselves, don't pressure them into DIY if that's not of interest to them. They probably get that kind of message every time they try to get help. Instead, point them at a reputable SI like the ones I mentioned in this video and other videos on my channel. For those new to PCs, the extra cost is worth it to have a warranty and tech support, and there are some truly amazing builders out there!

    Thank you very much.
    I have a Best Buy card, and I got myself a decent entry level.gaming laptop for a very good deal 18 months ago, and the no interest for a year made a big difference for me.
    But if I really find MMOs worth my time, I am going to want much better next year.
    My theory was that if I waited for a pre-built Lenovo Legion or HP Omen PC to go on super sale during the GPU generation transition phase next year, that would work, and I could upgrade later.
    But whereas I have seen some very sweet deals on RTX 4060 and 4070 laptops, I've never seen that happen for pre-builts, and you've convinced me that the same dollar value is better spent elsewhere.
    However, a thousand dollars is not on the table for me, so I think I will pass.
    Instead, I think I will slap an RTX 4060 into a refurbished workstation for $550ish, learn to tinker with it, and maybe build my own when I feel comfortable with it.
    I really appreciated your discussion and reasoning.
    Thank you again.

      That makes sense to me! I cover this in my disclaimers. If you're on the fence about pre-built vs DIY, give DIY a shot! You'll save money that way and learn a valuable skill. Those who are set on getting a pre-built are usually okay with the extra expense.

Can’t seem to find which motherboards most use and thus what capabilities they have for end user upgrades.

    • @swallowedinthesea11
      @swallowedinthesea11 Před měsícem

      Yes, you can buy a prebuilt right now and replace the graphics card, or GPU, tomorrow for whatever reason. The same applies to the memory, or RAM sticks. Add 16GB RAM to the existing 16GB RAM which you now have 32GB RAM.
      Most of the time the GPU is the most charged hardware because games are requiring more juice so your GPU may play the hottest games perfectly now, but 5 years later you may want to buy a better GPU to run a certain game.
      The CPU, motherboard, and the power supply unit, or PSU, are the most tedious to change so make sure you spend a little more for these so you won't have to think about upgrading these so you can focus only on the GPU and RAM.
      Avoid Dell because their builds are proprietary meaning changing hardware is only possible if you directly buy it only from them.

    I definitely would say to take this with a grain of salt. There's definitely a lot of bad prebuilts to sift through, but they regularly have deals and you can find that diamond in the rough at times. I got my 3070ti with an i7-12700k for a super good price at the time. I checked so many different places for the price range and specs and it was the cheapest I could find.
    My advice would be to just shop around. Usually you won't find something good at a place like Best Buy, but you definitely can. Some places are absurdly expensive at all times. Some places can be cheap but will regularly sell intel processors in their prebuilts that are almost always strictly KF or F processors. Just figure out what you want, and search.

Also I priced the build by component had I decided to build it myself and found that I came out pretty good. this was especially true after SKYTECH swapped out the shipped 4090 GPU with another one that was 600.00 more than the shipped GPU. I can not say a bad thing about this company at all. I will purchase from SKYTECH again no problem .

    While I have no problems with Best buy in general I often find they're not a best buy. Especially when it comes to computer hardware in general. But especially pre-built systems because of the kind of compromised hardware for the price and the junk BB has the OEM preload is downright criminal. Often you might find an open box ans be tempted, but your often better off staying away.

    I know very little about tech, but after months of research and deal shopping I built my first PC about 5 years ago. I absolutely hated the process! I hated buying everything separately, I hated looking for deals, I hated having to put it all together and figure out cable management. I hated all of it! It’s been a great PC though.
    Now all I hear when I ask for advice about finding a newer prebuilt is “don’t buy one, build one” and pure snobbery. Makes me want to scream. Let me be lazy and spend my own money in peace 😂

    I worked at Best Buy, did PC sales and Geek Squad...all of it. I hate to break it to you, but they make very little on the PC's themselves. The margin comes from pushing service plans, antivirus installs, accessories, and upgrades. So you start from a slightly distorted understanding of the Best Buy model.
    I haven't bought a prebuilt since early 1998, so I'm not a SI fanboy...or a Best Buy one.

    • @braethorn
      @braethorn  Před 3 měsíci

      That's not really the point of the video. If I were concerned with BB's profits, I'd comment on the whole bloatware grift for starters. I don't care how BB fares after they acquire their PCs.
      The video focused on how the arrangement affects SIs and how that, in turn, leads to compromises made in the end product. I don't have contacts at BB, but I do at most SIs, and some have educated me on the kinds of pressure they're subjected to. It's not a healthy dynamic, and it ultimately leaves the consumer on the losing end.
      If the highest heights you rose to at BB was the Geek Squad, then all you've seen is the ground level view of the business model. I've been speaking with those who deal with the harsh reality of the dynamic. It's not a horror show, but it sure isn't healthy.

      I'm sorry to hear that! Unfortunately, this is just a rare case of severe shipping damage. The fact that the CPPC systems arrived safely just shows that usually, shipping a PC is fairly safe. In this case though, it's clearly the fault of the shipping company, not the SI.

      If you heard the horror stories I've been told by viewers and members of my community about their experiences, you might not be so quick to judge. I stated my case clearly in the video, which I can't imagine you took the time to watch in full. BB makes money hand over fist by pushing plastic, proprietary Alienware garbage, making their employees lie to consumers by telling them that AW PCs are better than PCs that use off the shelf components.
      Because of the way BB corporate treats system integrators, any systems you sell there will be inferior *by default.* Have fun with that.
      Anyway, regardless of the trite gatekeeping you try to pull in your second comment, roughly 75% of PC hardware sold per year is in pre-built PCs. People will buy pre-builts, so instead of being dismissive and unhelpful, I'm showing them where they can get better PCs directly from the companies that actually build them without BB, Amazon, etc. taking a huge cut and forcing them to make their margins by cheaping out on components. Huge third party resellers like BB are poisoning the industry, and have been for a looooong time. 👍
