Yes, John is one of us and he's never tried to make out he is any better. A very humble man with a beautiful soul. Everyone is John's best friend. Never bothered with an international singing career cos his family was more important to him and he saw what endless tours did to other artists. Cold Chisel is the band Jimmy Barnes fronted from 1973 to 1983 before he went solo. A lot of great songs by them (including this song) such as Forever Now, Khe Sahn, Flame Trees, Bow River. Choirgirl, My Baby and Cheap Wine. There are too many to name and a rabbit hole definitely worth exploring. He went on to have an outstanding solo career with many more hits and is still going today.

Tells the best Dad Jokes ever during Concerts. I took my teenage daughter (14) to a John Farnham Concert and she sat there and didn't say much. When we got home she got my late wifes John Farnham LP's and got me to play them. She is now a fan. We both sat on the lounge and turned it full belt. There is a future.

I just found out today than Glenn Wheatley had passed away on the 1st of February from stupid Covid. It broke my heart & then I got angry because no one should've died from it if they'd had the REAL treatments! I'm so sad for his family & also for his best friend, John! Hi wonderful that you have discovered our Farnsie. He recorded his first song aged 17 in 1967.
John is an amazing man that we Aussies adore. His voice is incredible. Two of his best songs i would recommend, show his amazing versatility are :
    BURN FOR YOU,
ITS A LONG WAY TO THE TOP IF YOU WANT TO ROCK AND ROLL (AC DC COVER), and
    PLEASE DONT ASK ME.
Please hear then. You will so enjoy him.
John is now 73 and can still belt out his songs as good as ever. As you saw during Angels he is a true showman and we love that he is.

But there is also one with just Cold Chisel (Jimmy Barnes’ band was Cold Chisel) singing it (it’s their song) which is mind blowing and also one with just John singing it when he is in his early 50’s and in my opinion it is one of the best songs that demonstrates his vocal ability in the upper ranges.

I think, even though we can’t physically see Jimmy at the start of this song I’d lay money on it that he’s standing backstage, singing backup vocals for the chorus right from the beginning with “Ain’t nobody gonna steal this heart away…” I am 99% sure that’s his powerful voice we can hear drowning out everyone else. 😄 🤣
And I’m also pretty sure that the two times we hear girls screaming is Jimmy sticking his head out the curtains before he was supposed to come on centre stage properly.
Young Jimmy used to drink a LOT of vodka and scotch. A lot.

I believe this was from the 'Australian Made' concert series - a number of Aussie artists performed. Jimmy was not expected on stage but it is his band's [Cold Chisel] song so he came out and did the last with John. Australian artists are like that - sing each other's stuff and also support each other, not so cut-throat as elsewhere.

For two artists who have basically been in competition in the industry for over 30 yrs, they are very very close - most of our Aussie artists have a really close bond and support each other a lot often. A lot of it is behind the scenes (song writing/backing vocals on other artists albums etc) but you'll find that there are many many collaborations between them - maybe due to our country being so remote from the rest of the world, we are all we have !!! Thank you for featuring our pride and joy !

Steve Preswich [Drummer from Cold Chisel] wrote the song for Chisel and it was one of their classics. When Chisel broke up in 1983, Steve Preswich moved over to the 'Little River Band' where John Farnham was lead singer at the time. When John split and began his main solo career in 1985/6 he work WTWIS into his live set as well. The saddest part of this is Steve Preswich is no longer with us which adds that extra layer of significance every time you hear it.

John is just like everyone else. If you see him, even if he is in a rush. He will stop and talk. He knows who has made him who he is. John is a singer with an incredible voice range. The other one is a screamer who did not care for his voice, he could sing but he preferred to do it his way. His daughter and son can sing. Mahalia Barnes and David Campbell are his two singers. David didn’t know who his father was until he was 15. Then he found out his sister was his Mother and his Mother was his Grandmother but he was raised very well. He was hurt for awhile but he is talented. When his father moved back from Scotland David made an album with him. David is very special.

John is no exception as an Aussie Celebrity He's very Open and Approachable. He has Collaborated with a lot of different Artists from around the world over the years. Aussie Fans try to remember that Celebrities are Human to. We don't Mob Them or Invade Their Personal Space and treat them with Dignity. If You ever meet one Ask before trying for an Autograph or Selfie. Chris Hemsworth is well known for this there aren't any Private Beaches in Australia. He Loves ❤ to Surf and His Wife Elsa Pataky likes to exercise on the beach. She's Spanish and is best known for Her role in "The Fast And The Furious". If you ever visit Byron Bay, NSW (New South Wales) and time your trip to the beach right, meeting at least one of them is a possibility. Nothing against John - I love him as much as any Aussie does - but this is not the best rendition of the song which is still great in any case. The best was the live version done by Cold Chisel themselves in a live reunion concert, where there was a huge amount of emotion between the band members. They loved it and I think wanted to see the two perform together rather than necessarily the “best” version of the song. I guess best version is also subjective. I love this version and also the Chisel version and the one John does when he’s early 50s 😆

Absolutely agree, this is the best version.

@@Dr_KAP Absolutley. This is not bad by any stretch, but there are a few issues with Jimmy's vocal and he was going though many issues at this time. I like to think that John was trying to help out his friend with this appearance. I have always enjoyed the two of them performing together, there is a deep respect between the two of them and it shows.

Jimmys version with his band Cold Chisel live is better, or the version where John does it on his own. Either way this isn’t to bad either 🙂

I strongly suggest reacting to Cold Chisel performing this song live.. Jimmy’s original band.. live and acoustic, and something quite special..

I prefer John’s solo version to this. You get a much better vocal performance I think.

Before I continue I'd like explain something about Aussie Culture. Checking Out someone We find Attactive is Our way of Paying A Compliment, it doesn't always mean too much. Being in a Relationship doesn't stop Us. Aussie Partners don't usually feel Offended, because They'll be doing the same thing themselves. Checking Out someone in a Relationship is quite common, followed with a "Lucky You" look for their Partner. I know I'd be doing that if I ever saw Chris Hemsworth and I'm sure Elsa is used to it by now. Surfer's Paradise on The Gold Coast which is just south of Brisbane is also a very popular Tourist Destination. Not only is the beach a typically beautiful Aussie one. The Meter Maids wear Gold Bikinis as their uniform and are used to taking Selfies with people. Single People don't have to worry about what to say when they want to Ask Someone Out. For instance He'll Check Her Out and then She'll Check Him Out. If She's Interested She'll then go and talk to Him. If She doesn't most Aussie Men will accept that the answer is "No!" and respect that.

Still looking forward to seeing you listen to INXS Never Tear Us Apart, but for now, thinking of Jimmy Barnes, there is a song from Cold Chisel that really should be added to your list - Khe Sahn. There are many great Australian war songs like this one you just heard. Khe Sahn is another.
Khe Sahn was an American battle in Vietnam. There is close integration between American and Australian military forces and American aircraft will participate in Australian battles, and Australian aircraft participate in American battles. The song is about an Australian helicopter pilot who flew a gunship at Khe Sahn, and the way he can never sleep ever since and is on an endless quest to escape the trauma. The Bourbon Band used to do an incredible longer version that was 20 minutes long, and I remember many times on the dance floor as we all sang along with the refrain "the last plane out of Sydney's almost gone."
By exploring Australian music, you also learn some Australian history and culture at the same time.

In Australia Jimmy Barnes and John Farnham are known are Barnsey and Farnsey. They do a great duet czcams.com/video/RAlFHSPLHpo/video.html with Barnsey's Brother-in-law on guitar

The best version of this is by Cold chisel, which was fronted by Jimmy Barnes. But another singer Ian Moss sang large parts of that song and to me the original will almost always be the best.

I don't understand why people recommend this version. It's one of Jimmy Barnes all time worst performances, even he agrees with that. Went on stage completely drunk, no warm up, and just massacred his way though it. Cold chisel version or nothing

He definitely was a wild lad back in the day. His evolution both as a singer and as a man has been epic. I agree with you, I too prefer the Cold Chisel version but clearly opinions vary.

Funny you say you love his voice (I mean Jimmy's). Gotta laugh because I NEVER liked his voice. He's not bad looking and I don't hate the guy but his voice was always just a scream as far as I was concerned. Like Rod Stewart - I don't like the unclearness of the throat - the crackle, the sound like someone clearing their throats, like a coughing sound. I like the clear singers. John is alright but don't like it when he screams the high notes. Personally i prefer the sound of the late Michael Hutchence from INXS when it comes to Aussie singers. That is what I call a sexy voice.
