It's Not What You Think! Arms Straight Secret! 🔑

- The ability to keep your LEAD ARM STRAIGHT in the golf swing has a direct influence on how successfully you manage the radius of your swing, and RADIUS MANAGEMENT = CONTACT CONSISTENCY!
So many golfers are plagued by arms that flex too much throughout the golf swing which leads to issue with CONTACT, CONSISTENCY and LOSS OF POWER.
And unfortunately, despite knowing that your arms are flexing too much, simple "trying to keep the lead arm straight" isn't going to fix your problems any time soon, and that's because the REAL cause of your flexed LEAD arm, is your excessively flexed TRAIL ARM. That's right, the reason you have poor arm structure is the fault of your TRAIL arm - you've been looking in the wrong place all this time!
The Golfing Machine Book explains this phenomenon as "extensor action".
The relationship between your hands on the grip is called EXTENSOR ACTION. Since your left arm is kept straight by the outward pressure of your right palm against your left thumb, the length of the radii created by your arm and the club remains the same. Therefore, your club must inevitably make good contact with your ball. Extensor action joins the hands together and allows the two arms to work together. As long as a steady outward pressure against the thumb is maintained, the left arm will remain straight and will be tension free, from address to the top of the back swing, returning to impact.

Does anyone else pick up a golf club while Rob talks? I think it works really well to get the feeling he's discussing.
Love it! 😍
All the time. So glad he’s making videos again.
Yup, I think so too
@@joshualara8944 thank you! 🙏🏻
I keep extra golf clubs set aside in our living room, my home office and lanai (screened in porch) for when I watch Rob’s videos so I can try to mimic the moves and positions he describes. Not sure my wife is real happy about it but my golf game has definitely improved. Seriously!
This is the best explanation of the right arm and hand I have seen by anyone. I always heard that you move through like skipping a rock but it did not resonate with me. The pushing of the right arm is the swing thought I needed. I was trying to make my left arm rigid and honestly, my elbow on my left arm was developing tendinitis and I was just getting frustrated, as my arms were bending through impact and follow through. I knew I needed to keep my elbows close and get width on my backswing but I could not feel it. The pushing of the right arm, particularly through impact makes it easier for me to keep my shaft lean and move my hands through impact. I think being so right hand dominated caused me to struggle and for this explanation to make so much sense to me.
That’s awesome, Scott! Thanks for sharing your experience! 🙏🏻
Rob, I have played golf approximately 40 years, am 72 years old. Have been struggling with my game the past year or more. Hitting ball fatigue, thin, etc. Have played two rounds since watching your video above. It has made a tremendous difference in my Iron play as far as striking the ball much more solid and consistently. I am going to practice this move of tucking in the right elbow on a daily basis. My last two rounds were 82 and yesterday 79 ! It has been a very long time since I turned in scores like this!
Thanks for a great lesson, you definitely have my attention. 😊
Thank you, Robert! Happy to hear the video was so helpful! 🙏🏻
This is a huge lesson if you have an issue getting the arms straight ....I've been focusing on keeping my left arm straight...once I started focusing on my right arm everything came together
Thanks, Sam! 💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻
Same here this fixed my swing thanks!!
Why has nobody mentioned this right arm theory & methodology in the past 20 years! In terms of swing fundamentals, this is massively helpful, arm structure is absolutely crucial in terms of a consistent and powerful impact. 👍
It has 100% been mentioned and taught in the past 20 years by tons of people. think you just need to look around more.
Who?
@@GWills-ys6rd you can start by googling “the arm swing illusion” by Jim Waldron. Take it from there. There’s a lot of material
Glad the video was helpful. It's certainly not a concept that is discussed frequently within the golf teaching industry.
@@robcheneygolf1 I agree Rob. 👍
Really good swing tip I never really thought about my right hand relative to grip
Thank you. Glad it was so helpful.
I have found that the best way for me to keep my lead arm straight thru impact is to rotate better thru impact. And the only way i can keep rotating enough thru impact and into the release is to flare out, a lot, my lead foot. Sometimes its the little and unexpected things.
Great point. Rotation is so important and the foot flare plays a huge role in that!
Same with me. Flaring out my lead foot was a god send.
@@BP-1972 it’s probably the easiest thing to do for 90% of golfers! 👣
This is precisely what I've been working on this year. One of the best videos I've seen on the topic. Well done.
Thank you! Appreciate you watching and commenting on the video. Glad you enjoyed it! 👍🏻
Great explanation. I often feel (by accident) that I hit my best shots when my arm stays straight. Never knew the role of the right arm in all this.
Happy the video helped to clarify this for you. Keep crushing it!!!
This guy is really good explaining the control of the arms through the swing, can’t wait to try this as I’ve been alligator arming my arms restricting power and balance.
Appreciate the comment. Glad the video was so helpful!
I have been playing only for three years from scratch and this video is immediately changing my irons and drive performance. Great!!
That’s amazing! Well done 👏🏻
Wonderful lesson, Rob! So good to see you again on YT!
Thank you so much! 🙏🏻
God gracious !! I feel like jumping out bed and going the course to apply this ! Thanks for the excellent, effective, and helpful lesson Rob
Hope it helps you, Rick! 🤞🏻
Thanks a lot, Rob. I'm going to do this to fix my bending arm.
You’re welcome. Hope the drill is helpful for you! 👍🏻
i figured this out myself left arm straight. I didnt focus on the push out felling with right arm but is open at address. Great video i told my friends to view
Thank you so much! 🙏🏻
Excellent thank you!

Awesome video thank you for this
Glad you enjoyed it! 👍🏻
Great explanation Rob! I had been experiencing inconsistent in my golf swing results, and could not figure-out how I lost my swing, Your lesson is on point, and when I executed it properly my swing was more smoother and faster without apply extra effort. Thank You!
That's great to hear! Thanks for watching 👍
Great stuff Rob this has been an issue for me for years. Much appreciated!

Hey Rob I’ve just subscribed and sent you a small tip.
The pressure at impact which is what Pete Cowan talks about I was well aware of mate .
But that lead arm tip is the best golf lesson I’ve ever heard . Now that is a game changer so thanks 🚀
Thanks so much, Paul! Glad the video was so helpful for you 👍🏻
Thanks Rob an excellent watch Great explanation of the right arm
Thanks for watching!
Great explanation Rob , will try that hand pressure with stop quick drill . Toby
Thanks, Toby!

Rob, Continued great content. Would it possible in the future videos to review the other “accumulators” described in the Golfing Machine?
Let me see if I can get to this in the coming weeks 🙏🏻
Thanks Rob. I think exposing more of us to the great information that's in the Golfing Machine would be very beneficial. @@robcheneygolf1
Nice video
Thanks! 👍🏻
What a super video. Your videos combined with Tom Saguto made me focus on keeping the left arm as straight as possible but tbh I was struggling. I think this tip may really help me get there. Can't wait to get to the range.
Thanks, Neil! Hope it helps you. 🙏🏻
Thanks
Thank you, Paul! 🙏🏻
Never thought about it like that, but I would also suggest after taking the club away from the ball about 20%, stop and stand straight up. The club will be a little higher than the shoulders in position
Hope the video was helpful, Rudy. 🙏🏻
Love this method, it did not come overnight, but worked at it till l now understand the swing.
Glad it helped! 👍🏻
Looking at the comments I can see I’m not the only person that finds Rob’s instruction the most useful and understandable on CZcams! I’ve got down to 11.5 just by watching Rob’s instruction and this is another tip I need to try! Glad you are back Rob.
That's so awesome to hear. well done, Allan!
thank you this has been my problem for the past 40 years
I hope the video was helpful, Andrew 🙏🏻
Hi Rob
Ive never seen your content before but it showed up after watching a watch prediction video for Watches and Wonders (that's a lot of watches lol)
Anyway, the video is brilliant. Really watchable, explained thoroughly and most importantly, easy to follow and understand
I've followed for more of the same!
Thanks
Welcome aboard! Very happy to have you WATCHing the videos!
Great explanation👏👏 Do you do the same with the driver?
Yes I do, absolutely!
This has really helped keeping me on plane too. My over the top move has disappeared! Such a good lesson
Thank you! So glad it was helpful! 🙏🏻
Great video, thank you. Ball: As you come down, do you look before the ball, at the ball or after the ball.
I look at the ball, but I’ve seen golfers do well looking AFTER the ball to help with their contact. Find which one works best for you.
@robcheneygolf1, great answer. Thank you😊
When you say retraction of trail shoulder, is this done primarily with the shoulder blade?
Yes, that’s right 👍🏻
With the trail hand grip, I find that the fleshy pad is sitting on top of my lead hand's thumb. Is this correct or should the fleshy pad be directly in contact with the club's grip?
I like the fleshy pad to sit on the lead hand's thumb 👍🏻
Rob - on that pressure point with the right hand on the grip: Is it resting the life line of the right hand over the left thumb?
Yes, exactly 👍🏻
For someone who’s been working hard by focusing on the lead arm and now healing up from a sore elbow…this is what the doctor ordered
Makes much more sense
Happy you found the video and that it helped you! Good luck! 💪🏻
Thanks Rob,this is my biggest problem. I think.
Hope it helps, Scott.
Is there any changes to this for the driver and woods?
Nope. Same feeling for all clubs.
Lately I've been trying to get my lead shoulder under my chin more, because I feel like this helps to keep more width in my swing & a straighter left arm. Does that make any sense Rob?
It does… but I wouldn’t necessarily say that one equals the other. But the thought you’re describing could certainly encourage more width and a straighter left arm.
Seh gut Danke👍👏🇨🇭!
Bitte! 👍🏻
Rob is it the same with driver and woods
Yes, absolutely! 👍🏻
Thanks for posting I will try this as I have an over swing problem. Are you Australian ? Trying to pick your accent
I'm from England.
@@robcheneygolf1 thanks for replying I’ve been out trying to implement your lesson about straight left arm it went well I’m playing tomorrow fingers crossed ❤️🏌🏼♂️⛳️
@@gerardmcbryde3156 good luck! 🤞🏻
The chicken wing is an absolute nightmare for me. Super excited to see if this helps at the range this week
Hope it helps you, Andrew. Thanks for watching! 👍🏻
I have a disability and can't keep my left arm straight.
The stackntilt swing suits me much better.
I outdrive most people my age and hit dead straight drives.
It’s the easiest swing on the body! 👍🏻
Love your content, Rob. Just want to point out however that if you look at the slow motion, what you’re actually doing is different than what you tell us you’re doing. I’m referring to that flying wedge look that you ultimately finish in, isn’t what is happening through p7 to p8. You’re actually releasing the club slightly through p8 then coming back to that wedge position artificially. Would you agree?
Having said that, if we take your video to be fact, how would you alter it for Driver?
Fair point and good observation. The post impact “feel” that I’m describing is a feel I’m searching for, rather than an actual achievable position. But it serves to delay the release enough to still allow for the desired impact alignments with the arms/wrists/club. Hope that makes sense.
So many golf pros doing videos about how to play golf, I guess it doesn’t pay well if you aren’t that good and have to run the shop at your local golf shop and do tutorials for members and those new to the game. You sound like a driving instructor, pun not intended.
This will be a new thing for me. I don’t think my right arm is at that “give blood” position at address. So I give you a like for now and I’m going to give this a good college try at the range today. If it works out for me, I’m coming back to give you a subscribe 🤞
Did it work? Did I get the subscribe after all? 😊

Saguto golf is even simpler
I love Tom’s channel. We both teach the same system (Stack&Tilt), we just have different deliver styles which is fine 👍🏻
I like what he states but disagree on the follow through. The lead arm will fold quickly after impact with the proper release and not a roll of the hands. Lee Dietrich is an excellent teacher of the proper hinging of the trail and lead arms through the swing.
Thanks for watching!
I can’t keep my arm straight for nothing I think it’s because I’m not flexible 😢
It might be, but in my experience, it’s more likely due to your lack of supporting body motion that results in arms bending.
@@robcheneygolf1 that part I’m afraid of, but I guess if I have too develop a new swing from scratch that I will get the most out of I guess it’s worth the therapy…
So is this guy telling me....the Geoff Ogilvie who bent his arm on the way back and JACK and Speith who often would/will chicken wing a bit...
So now you're telling me those 20+ majors were done wrong?
This is an effect not a cause and a great way to get you thinking and never improve.
Not trying to hate but I teach and can't let people get misinformation.
These are all effects not causes....
Fix the causes and don't even focus on effects
Just because “somebody did it ‘a bit’” isn’t a reason to teach it to the masses. What, in your opinion, was wrong about the advice in this video? What’s the real cause of the lead arm flexing? 🤔
Thanks
You're welcome!
