- Hitting good mid-distance wedge shots is an issue for so many golfers,
It’s not a “small, big swing”, nor is it a “big, small swing”. This shot is truly a special shot which require a unique set-up and execution. Get it right, and your scores will tumble, get it wrong, and your perpetual frustration (and high scores) will continue.
You can learn how to execute the 30-80 yard pitch shot with relative ease once you know how to make the necessary set-up and swing adjustments which I will share with you in this video including:
* What club to use
* How far to stand from the ball
* Where to position the ball
* What length swing to take
* Wrists or no wrists?
* How to be consistent

One of the best videos on pitching I've ever seen.
I agree. Your videos are great excellent
Good job Bob. Very clear.😊
oĹlp9ⁿp9p9pppppp0😅
Thanks
Rob, your videos are absolutely awesome. I'm an 80 year old golfer, and your instruction, phrasing, and analysis are very easy to understand. Thank you.
I’ve seen many videos about this content but this is the easiest to understand and most logical one I’ve seen. Thank you so much!
I have bookmarked this video and watched it ten times over the last few months. Not only is it well explained and demonstrated, it's a repeatable methodology to take to the course and relax when it's time to pitch. Outstanding job 😀
To all the other teachers out there , listen to the patter of this guy. There is no doubt to “any” moves or positions he makes with any part of his swing. The attention to detail is exquisite in simplicity and very crystal clear. Keep up the great work , and people ….we gotta put in the practice ! Thanks again: Spanky
Sir,
I've watched hundreds. Maybe thousands of videos if you will. Don't change your methods of teaching.
Your instructions is exactly what I needed to become a scratch golfer.
One of the best explanation and instruction i ever seen
The final word on finesse wedge shots imho. Superb golf instruction.
I struggle here. Just watching and the SIMPLE explanation is priceless. CHEERS
Great demonstration and explanation Rob on how to hit the 30, 50, 80 yard pitch shot onto the green! This is the shot that I occasionally struggle with. After watching the video, I am reminded of what I should be doing! Good Job Rob!
Good information, reminds me of a Dave Pell class I attended 25 years ago. Which changed my short game forever. I still use the “Pelz” methods today for pitching. I am dialed in from 30-110 yards by using his technique of the 7:30, 9:00 and 10:30 swing using a 64,58,54,48 degrees wedges. Four wedges, three lengths equals 12 guaranteed distances. And honestly from there I’ve learned over the years to adjust the face and follow thru to land just about any distance in between.
Having read and watched Pelz, and now your video I'd like one tiny but hugely important clarification. And I know this is as basic as basic can get but I can see the lines on your mat are not relevant to this pitching technique but they distract my focus. So many videos talk about ball, position as an inch forward or an in the back in the stance and then have their feet pointing in different directions making me wonder where 'middle of the stance' actually is. Pelz definitely says between the heels and then will talk about turning left foot forward a little. That then alters the perspective of 'middle of the stance' Please confirm that, irrespective of where your toes are pointing, middle of the stance is half way and perpendicular to,a line drawn between the heels.
I am guilty of the bad pitching swings you mentioned, you have my atention to change that to enjoy this wonderful game we play
Definitely the best pitch shot video on the web.
That 50-100 yard shot once you get it is quite remarkable
Been playing 10 years, spent last 3 months practicing, the results are insane when you practice, becomes more enjoyable than playing…
Working on stock yardages is quite addictive once you got them. You start messing around with flights then….
I escaped many times from high bunkers with this technique today. Thanks Rob!
Yeah this gentleman is a solid teacher 👍🥰
All I want to say is that this works! Thanks for your time, explanation, and usable feels!
i tried this and was amazed at how effective this technique is! great lesson. so well explained.
That’s me ….that’s my next practice set and my next round, good to have the understanding
Thanks Rob, have o good day
Great detail in explaining the correct way to measure approximate distance for pitch shorts. Thanks Paul
Ok. I've worked with this and YES. It is absolutley correct. Simple, direct and effective. Had a positive effect straight away. Very uncomplicated
The most detailed video on pitching I have ever seen. Well done!
Great video. I have been trying to figure out the best way to get control over my low point. A few things you said caught my attention that I tired while I was watching you and I look forward to trying tomorrow at the range or in my backyard. The comment that caught my attention was when you described that we want a mixture of elements followed by something about coming up. I latched onto the idea of coming around to the left. Thanks. Can;t wait to try it out tomorrow
Now, this is a serious game-changer! This is exactly what I've been looking for; a great breakdown of the stock swing with distance adaptations! Looking forward to taking this to the range!
Glad it was helpful!
Very well made instructional sir! In my opinion, this is the foundation to build sound fundamentals, all the way to hitting driver. With a few tweaks along the way of course.
Thank you for the excellent instruction and I will be going through this again and again.
Best instructor on CZcams 👌
This is the best video I’ve seen on pitching ever
Really enjoyed the breakdown and sequencing of each of the three pitch shots.
Such a thorough on point explanation of pitch shots and lengths of pitch. Thank you ! Now to practice !
I can attest to the accuracy of this video, every time I play a Tournament. The short game is THE key element of all these guys. GIRs is more important than FW hit. Knowing you have the short game to get the putter in your hands quicker, is how you stay in contention. of course, you'll always have those days where it fails you..we are human even if we think differently.
One downhill Lie on a 50 yd shot can destroy any short game instructions, you can skull or hit fat the ball on a 50 yd shot and boom comes the bogey.
Good day Rob- Always on target with pertinent information. You're truly the most important instructor for my game. Be good, stay safe-Russ
Excellent; straight forward and not a lot of extra words!
Just rewatched this excellent video again. I keep learning/absorbing new things as I practice and review it. Thanks again Rob.
Probably the hardest shots in golf. Going to practice those three versions over the next few days. Thanks Rob!
Excellent video and demonstrations on proper pitching techniques.
Great video, Rob! I tend to hit at the ball at the bottom of my swing.
loved this video and your very clear explanation of the 3 shots - cant wait to get out on the practice range tomorrow
Great!! Will be implementing these tips as best I can. Thanks.
PRGR launch monitor will work great for this, get the closest shot and the longest then work on the middle distaances to get your stop points
Great video Rob
Fantastic demonstration Rob! Thank you
I struggle with the closed face syndrome, so thanks for the Fix. I'm not being impertinent, there is a big difference hitting off the mat and various lies on the course ie Different grasses, bare lie, soft/hard underneath so one still has to adapt. Always check the Lie before committing. Just my 2 Bobs worth. That might make a good outdoor Video. (Various lies from
Always spot on !
This subject is very rarely explained thanks Rob.
Great tips Rob. Thanks for sharing.
Awesome! Definitely be using this techniques. Thank you!👍😎
Outstanding information and explanation. Being new to golf I've recognized the short game is essential. I will make this part of my practice. Thank you. New subscriber.
Excellent content as always. Keep up the good work!
Excellent! I’ve been working on connected, torso powered pitching. It works! This video should help with distance control. Your content is the most helpful to my game. Thanks Rob!
Great video! Love your concept and system. Agree very important part of game.
Great view point on pitching…Thank you because I needed this.
Excellent lesson. Thank You.
Love these videos. Very informative. Alot of stuff here that i never knew about or thought differently
Awesome instructor, Thank you Rob! 👍
Always love your explanations!
Love your video. I try to keep it simple for example my pitch shots are same stance and swing from 90 yrs and below. Only thing change is my clubs 9 iron down to my 58 wedge. But 40-45yrds I change to my chipping swing with my 50 widge. What change is my width of my stance. Three club head width is 40-45yrds...two club head width 35-35yrds same swing....one club head width 30-35yrds......narrow 25-30yrds ALL same swing
very helpful, very well explained..thanks, well done
You are a brilliant teacher. Thanks mate.
This topic was more helpful and important to note. Thank you sir
I also think the club weight helps. I have the Callaway PM grind wedge and it’s my best club due to the heavy head weight. Keeps my tempo and I let the head weight do the work.
Great thorough instructions
Yes definitely one of the best! Loving it!
GREAT EXPLANATION ROB!!!!
Best Short Game lesson I've seeb!
Great instructions, looking forward to practicing on my next outing
Excellent video. Thanks.
Great video. Love it.
Great video! With pitching, my golf balls tend to stay short and stop before the flag, as I am unconsciously afraid of surpassing it and end into a bunker, trees or water, that usually surround the greens. It is a matter of finesse and requires confidence and a lot of practice in the course. To overcome that I tend to play with a less lofted club.
Your issue seems to be more of a mental thing, like leaving most putts short. Try train your mind to get half of your shots past the hole. Good luck
I've been using your swing hard stop quick motion for a while and it works really well for me. As you mention, in reality it is difficult to stop your arms travelling a little further than you would like and i usually end up with arms parrallel. For chipping these distances i still use your thought of stopping quick, but rather than stopping the arms around 45 degrees i think about stopping them at the ball. So i'm still swinging with effort and accelerating into the ball but now my arms stop effectively at around 45 dgerees.
Great demonstration!
Nice video. I currently hit 60 degree wedge for these shots but I actually don’t get much spin which makes it trickier for me on those pins at front and back of the green so I’ll try going back to 54. 👍
thanks a ton for this tip. the 30 yard drill here helped me a lot & it is a great feel. but I am still not getting the 50 yard one here. trying to get it
Really good demonstration of pitching - very clear. There were three definite changes in swing/tempo for 30, 50 and 80yds. Question - for distances in between, do I need to develop a kind of interpolation between these swings - how does the transition from 30yds to 40 yds and 50 to 60 yds look etc.
Great video, can't wait to practise
Excellent description
All good stuff..
Excellent teaching
Awesome "tips and swings"
Thank you 👍
excellent explanation👍
Hey I asked and you delivered! Thanks Rob!
Thanks. Pat
Mr. Rob, one of your best videos ever - Thank You! What about a video haw to hit a baby draw from every tee?
Rob, thank you for this lesson. It obviously works; but, I wonder why the bounce of the club doesn't cause the leading edge of the face to contact the ball too high?
I'm going to try this tomorrow !
Great video! One question: If you were to hit your sand wedge full, would you then add lag and chop a bit down on the ball?
This guy is good, REAL GOOD!!
Also, could you do a trouble fix video like the over draw, like coming too much from the inside, thanks Rob!
Rob, great video! Does your release pattern change as you need to hit the ball further than 30 yards? Is your release pattern on these shots different than a full swing with an iron or wood?
Great instruction Rob! Do you sell that basic grid setup that I see in most of your videos?
Great video
Good video!
Grt job done.
Great video on a topic that hurts many of us! Are you moving pressure in your feet during those swings (it appears you are) as opposed to staying on the lead side?
Super vid.
Really good tip. I tried it and it is really was good 😂
I'm starting to value the arms touching the torso as it feels do much more comfortable and connected. I will be developing my swing with this principle being the foundation
Thanks!
Great vid pal…
thanks man. i was delofting my 56 wayyy too much, my ball was flying i was getting so mad lol. now i know
Brilliant 👏🏻
