True and it's people like Dr. Phil who have advocated to where parents cannot physically discipline their children. The children today know this and hold their parents and the schools as 'hostages'. I have heard lawyers say it is now a crime to spank ones own child. Yet some children, especially ones who would attack a teacher, need physical or corporal punishment. In the 70's when I was in elementary school, the teachers had a paddle and would spank the kids who would not settle down. But back then most kids behaved and respected their elders.

Elementary teacher of 25 years here. Most of the parents I’ve interacted with have partnered with me for the benefit of their children. They have been kind and respectful. However, there have been parents who just don’t set up rules, structure, and boundaries at home. I’ve had meetings where I’m actually teaching the parents how to do that. Things that seem very basic to me:
      - have a set bedtime
      - use of electronics/social media/video games should be limited, monitored, and an earned privilege
      - set aside a space to do HW that’s away from distractions
      - check your child’s folder each day (for important notices from school)
      - give your children responsibilities at home (lay out clothes the night before, clean up after yourself, help clear dinner dishes, etc)
      - Have your child in school everyday when they are not sick
      I can go on.
Some parents will say, “I know, you’re right, but if I do those things, my child will cry/scream/have a tantrum.” I say, “Let them. Explain the rules AND the consequences. When they see you are not giving in, they will eventually stop.” Oh, it may be a long process, but they’ll stop. Children will do whatever the adults allow them to do. Sadly, many adults allow the children to be the boss.

I would tell my struggling students, “ You can do it, you just don’t know you can!” By the time I retired I could not believe the changes in students, parents and support. Education is in decline for America students. Too many parents are not being parents. Parents are not teaching even basic civility and how to treat others. Teachers have always been unvalued and underpaid , but that is our last concern . Real dedicated teachers just want appreciation and support from parents, administrators and the community so the students have expectations to aspire to .

There are two reasons why this is happening. 1) Many of today's parents are not raising their children to respect authority figures, such as teachers and there is a lack of discipline in the home and 2) School districts removed the ability of principals to discipline children. When I went to middle school and high school in the late 1970s and early 1980s, we kids feared and respected our teachers. We were afraid to be called to the Principal's office because we KNEW we would be disciplined by our Principals and our parents. Well, there is no more discipline at the school and very little discipline, if any, in many homes. What did people expect? I'm NOT surprised at all.

Many of today's parents take the side of their perfect, little, never-put-a-foot-wrong kid and rush to attack the authority figures. Rather than discipline their kids for throwing chairs, hitting the teacher, etc., they find someone to blame, and therein lies the problem. Any power the authority figure had has gone and the kids know they'll get away with anything.

All these viral videos of teachers being beaten makes me wish I could wrap my arms around them and protect them all. Especially, watching how emotionally broken this teacher is in this clip after what she’s suffered, when all she clearly wants to do is guide and elevate her students. This woman is absolutely PRECIOUS and a GEM 💎❤ I started crying when she did because I truly felt the love and care that she has for her students and for teaching. What a beautiful, beautiful soul, and she truly deserves the world. It is an absolute shame what these kids can get away with these days and the horrendous parenting (or lack thereof) that these kids are getting. I sincerely hope and pray that she finds peace and is able to teach again where she can be PROTECTED & VALUED.

She sounds like she was an amazing teacher, and it really is the children's loss. I feel so bad for teachers that want to just... teach. Not the teachers who indoctrinate their class, but the ones who genuinely care about kids and their education. i wanted to be a teacher at one point, never would consider it now. Kids are absolutely unbelievable nowadays.

I was raised by a single Middle Eastern father. If I had ever laid hands or even yelled at my teacher, I would have been dead meat when I got home. I was raised with strict discipline and I am grateful to my father for that. I married a German Mennonite man (married 40 years until he died two years ago) and proper discipline was a part of his culture too. Our son grew up to be a hard working MARRIED man with two children. If our son had laid hands on his teacher, God help him because his father would have made sure he NEVER did that again. God bless this precious woman. I would have loved for her to be my son’s teacher.
