My early sex Ed was a book my mother picked out from the library. It was horrifying. It said that a married couple would get pregnant by bathing together and the sperm swimming from the man to the woman. I was terrified to go swimming.
I remember in forth grade crying because we had to go swimming in class, and being made fun of by other kids.
PLEASE tell your kids the truth when it comes to sex Ed. Actually telll the truth for anything!
*my* sex-ed book was an anatomy book that mysteriously appeared in one of our bookcases at about the appropriate time. Trouble was that the diagrams were, as far as I can tell, not anything near accurate depictions.

Had factual sex ed in Catholic high school in the 80s in biology class. Was taught the morality in religion class. It always blows people's mind when I share that. But I grew up in a liberal city in a liberal state taught by liberal nuns and brothers at a liberal Catholic school. Seriously, Sister Jane pulled no punches in class and gave us all the facts about birth control and how to avoid STDs.

Yes!! Same situation in our Catholic middle school. I had better factual sex ed in Catholic Middle school than my friends had in public junior high.
Ive brought this up on other video before, but a religious facility is normally a reflection of community not vice versa. Churches in my neighborhood are more than just accepting and progressive, they are also the focal points of community outreach services like food pantries and clothing drives. But I won't step a foot in a Church farther out of the city I live because that's when you get to the MAGA crowd.

The creators of the Powerthirst videos definitely watched educational videos like this in school hahaha. Also, I think getting kids to laugh was definitely the point. It keeps them engaged and eases some of the discomfort of discussing a subject like this, so they can actually learn the info rather than be distracted out of boredom or shut down out of embarrassment.

100% on MDJ’s comments about how religious people can communicate waiting until marriage to have sex. I’m religious, but when I was about 9 years old my mom (an L&D nurse) gave a very thorough and accurate explanation on sex and the reproductive system. She then provided some age-appropriate reading material for me to work though on my own, and was always approachable for questions. I never had an issue with waiting until marriage, but I was also prepared for my life as a person with a uterus! I really don’t get why some people think kids will have sex just because they learn about it.
It was taught in my religious community growing up that the sooner kids learn about sex, the younger they will become sexually active. I believe that take isn’t uncommon unfortunately
Parents try to keep it a secret from their kids but they just get told at school by kids who see stuff online. Or they see stuff online. And then they have to pretend to not know for years until their parents give them the talk at 12 and they pretend they had no idea but they really did. And the whole scandalous secret thing makes it exciting
@@drpigglesnuudelworte5209ou just described my life 🤣 had sex talks and puberty talks with my mom from a young age (she had weekend visits), my grandparents didn’t have any talks with me until i was 11 about just even my period about 2 months before i actually got it. not sure why they thought the same method would work on me when my mom, their daughter, got pregnant at 16 lmao, but im 18 and still never been pregnant thanks to my mom teaching me from a young age.
Given the number of young women who are completely uninformed but get pregnant anyway, I'd guess that lack of sex ed isn't even remotely effective in preventing sex.

Because once kids starting knowing more about how biology worked than their parents, a lot of parents (especially very religious ones who used misinformation to back up their ideals) freaked out and changed stuff for the worse.

In a previous life back in the late 80's, I was a high school biology teacher at a NASA area school district. We were on sexual reproduction. I mentioned benign cystic teratomas... hair, teeth bones etc. I said facetiously it was like getting "pregnant" without having sex. Kid goes home and says biology teacher said you can get pregnant without having sex. Called into the office the next day and had to educate the 80 year old science coordinator on teratomas. I quit not long after.

My younger son came home from school on the day they did sex ed and announced that he was NEVER having sex. It was too messy. I remind him of this regularly. He is 25 now
I was also disgusted and made a similar proclamation when we got the talk in middle school. Years later, turns out I’m asexual 😂
When I was in elementary school and I told kids that my parents weren't married a lot of them would question my existence and accused me of lying. I love that this little video doesn't say you need to be married cause way too many kids grow up thinking that's the only way. I personally have also learned alot from this channel so thank you Dr. Jones! ❤
How long ago was this? In my country it was very common for parents not to be married growing up.
@@anainesgonzalez8868 I'm 38 and Australian and let me tell you my primary school scripture teacher was not impressed when she said you had to be married to have kids and I put my hand up and said my parents weren't married (they never got married but stayed together for 33 years). Thankfully he reaction was just to blush and move on and not tell me something bad would happen to my parents. My kids briefly went to a private Christian school and some of the things their teachers told them were wild.

I had a similar battle convincing people that my black cousins and Native cousin were actually related to me.
Two of my mother's three sisters are most attracted to men of color. I have more black cousins than white on that side of my family.
I grew up in NC and had sex-Ed in the mid 2000s. A girl in my class asked the same question about how the sperm and egg meet, and my teacher wasn't legally able to answer her question. We were taught abstinence only, but we didn't even know what we were supposed to abstain from.

You are so right. Kids can get experimenting without any knowledge of what can happen. Some think that if they are not married, then they can't get pregnant. Also kids really need to no boundaries and consent. They need to know that if someone touches or grabs them in private places and areas that they should yell NO and run to get help from parents and safe adults.
It has been proven that children with the proper understanding of sex, they are less likely to get pregnant. If they don't know how it happens, then they don't know how to stop it.

There were a group of us who fought Jesse Helms, hard, to get better sex ed in the 80s, when NC was in the peak of its AIDs epidemic.
Wake County, Orange County, Forsyth, and another half dozen counties (10 total, I think Buncombe was one, can't remember the rest) changed to evidence based sex ed by 1987.
I left the country in 1992, I'm wondering if any of the counties kept the better sex ed after I left.

I’ve heard of the super rare occurrence of the ovum being released and fertilized before it even entered the fallopian tube and for whatever reason, decided to forgo entering the fallopian tubes all together, setting up shop outside the uterus via implanting on the outside of an abdominal organ like the spleen or something. Of course, this poses a whole host of health risks for the mother and the developing fetus, and if carried to term, the fetus can’t be delivered vaginally, so a c-section has to be done.

Same here, they also split us into boys and girls to teach us independently from each other. It's such bullshit and really only hurts the kids as they grow older and interact with their bodies. For reference, I'm a trans guy but obviously was on the "girls side", we weren't taught about discharge obviously and only knew that semen was a milky liquid. Some time later when I started menstruating, I was fully convinced that my white discharge was actually semen and I had somehow produced it. It's insane how little many of us get taught in school.
yeah, I was in 5th in the late 90s, and we were still separated by boys and girls and only told about our own puberty and nothing else. I didn't even know/learn boys get erections until I was in 8th/9th grade.

Based on my own experience, I feel that making pleasure and sex a negative thing can have harmful consequences. I was extremely young when I discovered that I could pleasure myself, one of my parents discovered what I was doing and I was told that I needed to stop doing it, that it wasn't something I should be doing, it felt as though I was being told off, I didn't understand it at all but it created a lot of shame for me. It's something I don't think I have ever gotten over.
I'm sorry that your parents passed their own shame onto you.
I'm lucky that my mom survived her CSA, and sought out counseling and therapy as an adult so she didn't pass her trauma on to her kids.
I hope you are able to locate one of the growing number of sex positive therapists, so you can work through your experience growing up.
Having shame around sex or pleasure can sabotage our intimate relationships.
my daughter went through a phase when she was around 6 (classic freudian genital phase) where she would straddle the corners of sofas or matresses & rock side to side. she called it wiggling and i just told her that she can't be doing that around other people, that's private bedroom behavior. i was literally in high school before i even found out what a clitoris was, much less that girls could masturbate (i thought only boys could because no one ever talked about girls masturbating) and i don't want my kids growing up thinking they need to resort to sex in order to satisfy those urges for pleasure.
@@dietotaku I was around four-five when I discovered myself in that way. I had no idea what it was, literally all I knew was that it felt nice. And then that I was doing something wrong and shameful.
I think my parent automatically went to "who has shown you how to do that?" It almost become an interrogation. I can't describe how I felt at the time but it definitely stuck with me.
People seem to think that young children shouldn't learn about their bodies, but surely learning about it is better than being confused and ashamed.
I think it's good to have gentle conversations about it, and to know that it is natural but it is private bedroom behaviour, as you put it.
Kids are able to understand it being okay & private. I think young girls suffer because unlike boys, they're not encouraged to touch themselves at all. Just teaching a boy to pee standing up let's them know it's ok to handle themselves. Girls are more prone to use objects to rub on. My daughter was in pre-K when a couple of the kids learned to rub on their mats at nap time. The teachers excuse for not liking it was "it made them sweaty". I explained that the teacher likely sweated when she masturbated too, but it wasn't a public activity. Silly reasons for discouraging uncomfortable behavior created confusion for kids.
To be honest, even when I was younger (10-12 years old) I prefered sex-education with straight-up terms, no "sugercoating" it, and no wild imagery/movies. My 6th grade class once went on a field trip, we went to watch a sex-ed movie in a theater. It used proper terms, and real imagery, and I wasn't weirded out at all. Everybody else, on the other hand...

This was done very much in the style of the *Magic School Bus* which used funky, discombobulated graphics and storylines to teach science to children in the '90s.
My kiddos were hooked on it. If I sing the theme song, they all become primary school aged kids, and sing along to this "retro" cartoon. We had all of the books too.

My teacher showed it in my high school biology class as a gag (just the part regarding fertilization, we didn’t have to suffer through the whole video), and my bff and I have been making jokes and references to it ever since. “He did it!” 🤣 I’ve been wanting to show it to my husband so that he can finally understand the insanity of what we witnessed.

I never realized how ahead of the times my school was. We never had silly videos like this. We had proper terminology and non-shaming discussions. This was the early 90s!!!! Then, in 8th grade, an OB/GYN came in and talked all about STDs - even showing slides of what the effects look like on real people!! It was informative and we all got a lot from it.
I will never forget the sex ed video my middle school showed us in the 5th grade, circa 1992 - a girl goes backyard camping overnight at a friend's house and gets her first period. In the morning, the friend's mom makes pancakes for everyone in the shape of the female reproductive system while explaining periods and how babies are made. I had gotten my period several months before they showed this to us.
Yes we got the menstruation ed in third grade but one girl already had it and I still didn't parse I had my first period two years later because they all talk about blood but menarche blood can be brown. I thought I shat myself. This was embarissing.
Ahhh! I remember the pancakes and my lasting impressions were that the mom could just perfectly pour pancake batter in the shape of the female reproductive system and the closet full of every single product the sponsoring feminine hygiene company had made since the 1920s.

@@joyahaataja366 That's the rural midwest for you, I guess - fortunately my mom was a nurse who had a horrible experience with her first period (no one ever told her, she just started bleeding one day and of course freaked out - and her mom laughed at her when she came crying, thinking she was dying) and made sure I knew all about it long before I started.

I don't know, I've never seen this before, but I felt like the narrator voice from "above" was a jab at "god" trying to butt in on the education, but the awesome Dr. D refused to let religion influence this extremely important topic of education. This may be cheesy AF, but it's the best and most accurate sex education I've ever seen!

Wow, among the chaos there was decent information and (sort of) anatomically correct depictions of how it happens. When I was in the 6th or 7th grade in the early 70s the nuns flat out refused to tell us how it happened. It was terrifying. We did get information from our friends. Pregnancies resulted. So much for preserving "innocence."
In all the education I received, they only showed each side and never explained how they met, and I ended up googling it and getting traumatized. I would’ve much preferred to have this over what they did at my schools

Dr. Jones, I love all of this content. Here in CA, our entire sex ed curriculum can be found free online, 100% of it from the student portion to teachers editions, k-12, available for anyone to look at and see what their kids are learning, and I’ve used it as a homeschooling parent. But having your exploration of vintage educational videos has been a fun and informative way to augment what I’ve been able to share with my kids. Thank you 🙏🏼
As a male: Yes, "trippy" colors were used here, but, the basics were well covered. And, yes, some friends found out that irregular periods can lead to being fertile at unexpected times.

This video is old and quirky. BUT it proves the point that the plot/scenario is more important than how advanced and expensive the media is. It says the right words and shows everything well enough for the intended audience. I find it absolutely appropriate, and I'd gladly show this to my kids. If they spoke English. If I had any kids.

My 6-year-old really loves anatomy and learning about human reproduction. Actual conversation:
Her: Mommy, kids in my class think God made them! They are wrong! Their mommy and daddy made them with the sperm and the egg.
Me: Oh… well some people think God made the sperm and the egg come together.
Her: And mommy, they think they need surgery to take the baby out! I told them the baby comes out of the vagina.
Me: Did they even know what a vagina was?
Her: No.
Me: Ok, let’s not talk about vaginas to the kids at school that don’t know yet. Let them think what they want for now.
Somehow I managed to not get a call from school. Anyway, I think she’d like this video in particular. She has asked to watch live births. I told her we can look into that but maybe not right now.
To be fair, some babies do come out via surgery. Not all births are vaginal births🤷♀️
Some women do need surgery to get the babies out though. A cesarian section. I think that would be an appropriate discussion point to have with your daughter given the dialog presented here
I love this so much!!!! My son is 4 and keeps telling me that his dad and I grew in his belly and he had to have a cesarean to get us out. Oh man that kiddo makes me laugh.
He's been teaching his cousins all about their bodies. Their mom finds it hilarious. My dad is horrified my 4 year old is telling his 4 year old cousin about her body and trying to draw it for her. The older cousins ignore him and tell him they know all about it. Lol
My mom is high 5ing me. His dad it's mortified and his paternal grandparents can't even say the right anatomical terms. My son gets so mad at them when they use nicknames for anatomy.
I would start with some animal births first when you feel she's ready. Gives the general idea without some of the trauma. I would definitely give them a watch first, nature being what it is, not all the animals survive in some of the videos.
Back when my first was around 15-16 months, she pointed down during a diaper change, and asked “what’s that?” So I told her.( we had done the heads, shoulders, knees …. Etc. )
That’s been my way to teach her about these subjects. When she asks, I give her frank, age appropriate answers. I go into more detail if, and when, she asks.
Whoever made this video was 100% stoned beyond belief but the content of the video is actually really good and age appropriate lol.

Fun animal fact: There's a species of whiptail lizard that's entirely female and reproduce by self-fertilization, laying eggs that hatch into clones of the mother.
Some species of fish will mate with the males of closely related fish species but their young are all clones as well. Some species of snakes, lizards, and apparently some birds (at least California condors) have also asexually reproduced. A CZcams channel, Snake Discovery, had a snake they raised, who was never paired with a male because they think she’s too small/young to breed yet, lay eggs this spring. I think there were some duds but a couple looked fertile so hopefully in the next few months there’ll be some babies with a sole parent in their care

When I was in my Senior year of HS, my friend showed me a pet Stick Bug (like the one from the Pixar movie Bugs Life). I loved it so much (I've always liked bugs) and he let me keep it. I named him Steve. Well, about a year later while living with my then boyfriend (now husband), I went to check on Steve one morning and saw little lines all over his glass cage. Upon further inspection, they were moving and looked just like Steve. I run to my husband and say "honey.. Steve is a girl stick bug!". Turns out they are actually asexual and clone themselves. When cleaning their cage, you're suppose to put the bottom dirt in the freezer for a month to kill the eggs before throwing it away so you don't cause an infestation. I don't think Steve caused any infestations at my local dump, but after him I had 2 more generations before they all died out. This is one of my favorite stories to tell 😊

At buch of species do. Some other can reproduce by self fertilization, but reproduce sexual most of the time. An shark species can do that. There is a funny story about an aquarium. One female shark, and she lived there for while. All of the sudden, a baby shark appeared. No one knew why, turned out, yes that species can reproduce asexually, but it is rare.

See, as a theater kid, I’d like to point out that Spring Awakening warned us about providing inadequate sex ed and telling your kids that they can only get pregnant if they love the other person a while ago. The main character is told that, then has sex with a boy she loves (it’s left unclear if she consents to it fully), then gets pregnant. At the end of the show, she dies when her mother forces her to get an illegal abortion that ended up being botched. Scarred (in the best way) from that musical. yeah i appreciate that this explanation is factual without getting too explicit, but i'd have to tell my kids that no, you don't have to be "in love" to have sex, it is literally a simple mechanical process of "penis in vagina." of course it's a GOOD IDEA to refrain from sex until you're in a committed relationship and even then you need to use birth control so you don't get pregnant before you're ready, but plenty of people have sex without being in love and sadly sex can happen without consent as well, and pregnancies can result from those situations just as easily.
They might be able to use it as a sex Ed in school, except for the fact that one of the songs names is totally f$&@ed. I don’t think that it would go over well. Also, unfortunately, there’s no filmed version of this as far as I know.

My consent vs rape talk left me with the idea that if you're with someone you want to be intimate with you discuss it first. If it's not someone you want to be with, then they become violent and rape you. Date rape was a bit of a vague concept. So I'm slightly embarrassed to say that my first time happened without me understanding right away what that pain was. To his credit he stopped when I freaked out, but it was too late.
My mother often returned and picked up library books for me when I was in school and she was going to the library herself. One day I found a book on sex ed in the pile. I read it. That was basically it. Looking at this, I'm quite pleased with her approach.

When my kids were growing up, every Christmas vacation we would sit out on the porch swing and they would ask me any questions about sex that they wanted. Of course I was available year round, but something about them knowing that moment would happen every year made them really open up and feel comfortable. I still remember those Christmas vacation talks.

I grew up in a Christian home with parents who were very eager to do things the 'right way' with bringing up their children, but they had the wisdom not to lie to us about sex ed. Near puberty Mum gave me a secular comic book that explained puberty etc and said I could come ask her questions if I needed to.

I find this hilarious. The "sex education" I got (in the late 60s) didn't even cover erections. I had such a misconception about how the sex act occurred that I didn't learn until the "Special Sex Session" of my freshman college biology class, where this "S-cubed" lecture had to be presented after hours, and optional, because of the state laws of the time. (They specifically couldn't present sexual physiology!) And oddly enough, even in *medical* school, we had to deal with similar rules. We had optional classes that covered transgender surgery, sex in the disabled, homosexuality, and other subjects that weren't specifically anatomy, "disease" related, or "medication" related. Only about 50 of my class of 140 actually attended those!
YAY STEVE!!!!! As horrifying as this looks, it's actually not bad. It explains a lot more than what I got at school, but I was Christian so there was a lot of "don't have sex until you are married, never talk about this again"
I love this channel. Not only are your reactions hilarious and endlessly entertaining to watch, but I can find that even with so basic a topic as sex ed, I still have more to learn. I genuinely thought that the ovaries were attached to the fallopian tubes, because that's how the diagrams we were taught sex ed with more than three decades ago showed them. And now I know better. My sex ed began from looking at embriopathology book my mom had, it was about animals but pig fetus looks really similar for some time and it was great transition to human reproductive system. My mom (graduated animal biology and farming studies) educated us very early on so I don't even remember when, I just knew since I can remember. No surprise I always loved biology.
You probably had better "sex education" than I did. I was given medical books (old ones my father had found) which unfortunately didn't go into any physiology information. Very confusing considering how the anatomy of the male and female are always portrayed. I asked my mother for more information and she *told* me to ask my boyfriend who was standing right there! (Needless to say, he was totally embarrassed. He gave me a fiction book which only confused me more. Then he broke up with me for being "too naïve".) School "health" classes (ie. sex education) only had the basic anatomy drawings and a lot of talk about sex resulting in sexually transmitted diseases (without any talk of prevention other than "no sex.")
I'm the child of a nurse and a biology teacher. I remember the diagrams I was shown in kindergarten. Lol
My mum is a doctor so I also do not know when or how I learned this things, it was always there.

This is way more accurate than the videos I was shown in 1999; I actually only remember videos about menstrual ed and STIs, but not about anything else. I did grow up in Southeastern Kentucky so 🤷♀️

My sex ed wasn't as bad as it could have been, but videos like this really put into perspective how subpar it was. My school never even touched concepts like consent or the actual way sex works let alone something like orgasms, like, at any age, so consider me blown away. We were taught about basic anatomy, the menstrual cycle, STIs, and that birth control existed (not ever how to use it) all with abstinence as the core of the teaching. Something along the lines of, "birth control is X% effective, but you know what is 100% effective? ~Abstinence~ Look at all the bad things that can happen if you aren't ~abstinent~. You don't want those things to happen to you, do you?" I ended up getting most of the actually useful information from Sexplanations here on youtube as I was very frustrated with the obvious religious influences in my education.

I totally remember watching this video and being absolutely mortified to be the only one in the the room that 1-had already gotten her period and 2- knew what sex was.

I think this video should have talked about the age girls start menstruation. They referred to the cycle as a woman's cycle when girls start to get periods from 2 to 9 years before adulthood and many even before they are teenagers. Girls shouldn't be made to feel they are women as soon as they get their period.
@@heathercraig8902 I agree with it would have been better to say something other than when a women gets her period. I was 10 and in the 5th grade when I got mine. I was 100% still a little kid, no were near a preteen let a alone a women.

I feel like as a kid I already knew how it worked. Not because I had parents that taught me but maybe a friend learned from their parents. Our sex ed was just menstrual talk and how not to smell bad during that time. With a lot of abstinence thrown in.
Yeah, I taught my kids about sex pretty much the way you suggested for religious folks. See, my mom, despite being a registered nurse and having 9 kids, did not see fit to tell her youngest thing one about sex. Nothing about periods, nothing about safe sex, nothing about dating. I was never sat down to have “the talk.” She took me bra shopping but when I got my period I just started using my sister’s pads. I dunno what I would have done if I hadn’t had a sister 2 years older than I was. No notice was taken, no observation made, my mom clearly just figured I’d started mine at some point, probably because the pads started moving double time. It disgusts me to this day but she’s nearly 86… what can I say about it?
But it would have helped, for crying out loud. The only excuse offered has been that whole “her generation didn’t talk about things like that” bs. Her oldest was a girl! Makes me want to ask my sister if Mom ever told her or if she just started sneaking Mom’s pads like I did with my closer sister. Anyway, I wasn’t even taught about “private parts” and bad touches… shame, since my best friend was being molested by her dad and I didn’t know enough to recognize it or tell an adult and that haunts me to this day. Her mom left him when my friend was around 11-12 so that’s something, at least she got her out of there.
So with all that, yeah, my kids were gonna be armed with all the knowledge I could provide appropriate to their ages. And I made it clear why we believe in saving sex for marriage, but that at least you need to make sure you’re in a committed relationship and ready to deal with a kid because it’s feggin hard to raise a kid alone. I also added that teens start way too early and that’s not a religious opinion, it’s a personal opinion. When I look back at myself as a teen, I was absolutely not ready for something like that. It was a good thing that I managed not to stupidly get myself in over my head. Anyway, yeah, we talked about diseases and to never take your eyes off your drink if you go to a bar or a party (though I discouraged going to bars and certain types of parties, not sure why people think you can’t have fun unless you’re blackout drunk). And yeah, I discouraged drinking, ever. From the first drink, you’re surrendering your ability to make safe decisions and giving someone else either the burden or the opportunity to make some for you. Hell naw.

We were given black and white photocopies of these charts throughout high school (because if you make a teen color in fallopian tubes often enough, they'll use condoms...? Not sure what the logic was) and made to mark all the parts with the standard kit of black-blue-green-red ballpoint, and 2-3 colors of highlighter. Wildly colored means you're learning.😂
The school I went to didn't do any elementary age sex ed. However, there was a class in 4th grade about different types of abuse. I think the program was called Hands-Off Bill. Seems like that was only couple hours long. There may have been a video, but I might be confusing it with the PSAs that aired on TV during that time. This would have been the mid 80s.
In junior high, there was the random puberty class. Which was basic things: Hair In New Places! And bathe and use deodorant so you don't smell!
Freshman year of high school was the required Human Development class. It lasted half a semester. The sex ed portion was towards the end. We had egg babies and watched child birth films. It also covered STD/STIs.
The first sex ed video I ever saw was one Disney ran at Epcot in 2000. I was in second grade and it was very interesting. It didn’t explain the physical act but did a nice job with the biology behind it.
This one, however? Is kind of terrifying in how strange it is.
As someone who had to monitor & then answer questions after the 4th & 5th grade sex Ed questions, this video is fantastic!! We had 2 separate videos. One for boys & one for girls. 4th grade watched the same sex video, 5th grade watched both. Then the kids were given index cards to write out questions… & we read them aloud anonymously. In this school, a Title One school, some kids knew way too much for their age, other knew absolutely nothing… & they always had tons of questions. Lots of parents were not involved for various reasons. A school district nurse was very limited on how she could answer questions. I was not. I answered honestly at the levels that they needed. I knew these kids, their parents, their home lives & what they needed.
The cut to the wine break was the pinnacle of comedy

When I was in 8th grade, their idea of giving us a sex education course was to have an abstinence only assembly, and in my Home-Ec class, have the boys go watch SpongeBob while the girls had to listen to a speaker who came to teach us "how to not get yourself raped."
They even sent us home with little booklets talking about the usual, oh-so-scary, stranger-danger rape scenarios, and basically pinning it all on "being irresponsible" if you were a girl.

I guess I got lucky. When I was in 5th grade our school nurse taught sex Ed. We watched a series of videos that explained it like this video did. She also gave us time to ask questions and she didn’t sugarcoat anything. She sent notes home for parents to inform them what was going on in the class. She also asked if parents wanted to be in the class or the kids could take home a copy of the workbook we used. Some parents chose to not their kids partake in the class as those parents were either super religious and didn’t want their kids heads filled with whatever. Some parents also had tons of questions for nurse Meghan as they had no clue about some of these things themselves. Yeah, people in their late 20’s to late 30’s didn’t know this.
This was also back in the early 90’s.
Aside from the rocky start, this was actually so good?? Everything was properly named, and it answered all of the questions kids might have without any embarrassment!

I was once hired to make a 3D model of the female reproductive system that was going to be 3D printed to use for demonstrations. I had to do a lot of research to figure out exactly how the ovaries are attached. Almost every illustration shows them just floating there, not attached to anything.
I am so old! in 1979, our "sex ed" involved the boys going into one class and the girls in another. No idea what the boys learned about, but we just watched already out-of-date videos from the late 60s, probably, Sponsored by like Kotex or Modess about how to use a pad. They gave a brief description of what a period was and how often they usually happened, but no real context beyond that. Almost no discussion of tampons, definitely nothing useful about sex or pregnancy, just "use our product to feel fresh and clean!" We had it two years in a row with the exact same videos for 10 - 12 year olds - 4th and 5th grades. Back then, most girls got their first periods around ages 12-14. I think it's not that way any more - both my friend's daughters started their periods at age 8!!

Wow. That was the most 90’s video I’ve ever seen. They were always rapping in everything back then. I had sex ed in the mid 80’s at a Catholic school, so we didn’t have any fun videos. What they presented to us was absolutely terrifying. They showed us real photos of STI’s (VD back then). I really liked the video, aside from the bizarre sound effects. Oh, and the horrifying egg. 😱
