So sad. Too young to die. My older brother suddenly died of a heart attack at age 23. No drugs, no alcohol, healthy active lifestyle, ate healthy. Traumatizing and devastating to this day so I could imagine that all of his family and friends and fans feel to this day. Live life everyday to the best. RIP.
I'm so very sorry for your incomprehensible loss. Take care of yourself and have your genetics done for this type of heart disease. God bless you Mikey.
The pain of loosing someone so talented so young so handsome is heartbreaking. At least he passed doing what he loved with his beautiful wife beside him. 28ys old and 28yrs have passed and the pain is still unbrarable. Thankfully we can still see them on CZcams. Skating with Mario Lanza singing is a double blessing. A statue of him would be magnificent never to be forgotten. 💙 💙 💋 💋 🎈 🎈
After we lost Sergei i could no longer watch figure skating. This year i discovered CZcams and, to my total delight, found that i could again watch this Magical Pair skate. It has been over 25 years and I still miss the elegance, the grace, the strength, and the speed that is G&G. And I can watch skating once again. There is no one that can come close to Gordeeva AND Grinkov. T
I had two cousins die at the age of 28 & 32 both played sport and took care of themselves. Still after all these years they were truly a beautiful couple to watch and soul mates even now....
Young men, healthy and athletic, often suffer from cardiomyopathy. Without knowing anything about it....until it unfortunately takes them. I’m so sorry for your loss.
Sergei Grinkov, even his name is Lyrical. I love saying his name because it’s Rare and it’s Beautiful just as he was. I miss the Bright Light that he brought to the world. You are greatly missed and I wish you were still here. But then; you left us a Very Rich and Joyous Legacy. Of which I am forever grateful. God Bless and Keep You, Always 🙏🏻❤️
I lost my baby brother the Saturday before Thanksgiving 2019. He had just turned 50 in August, and dies of a massive coronary 3 months later. I know he wasn't a baby. But, he was still my baby brother, none the less.
I’m so sorry for your loss. My sister is 6 years younger than me and I would be devastated if I lost her. Life is not forever so enjoy every moment, every breath. Love those in your heart often and always. 🌺
I lost my oldest brother at the age of 48 in 2007 of a massive heart attack while out on a group wreck dive scuba diving 3 miles from shore on Lake Michigan (Chicago). Efforts to revive him failed and he was pronounced dead at Northwestern Hospital just before noon August 5, 2007. His last dive log entry the morning of his death was "light head". I also was the last person he spoke to 24 hrs earlier. All over the Chicago news. It was awful.
It was amazing watching Sergei and Katia’s love story play out on the ice. You knew when they were on the ice you were seeing something beautiful and you couldn’t take your eyes off of the tv. Sergei was a gifted skater with a smile that could light up a room.
Still breaks my heart after all these years. They were my favorite pairs couple. So graceful. I remember the Lillehammer games and rooting for them. I also remember what I was thinking at the time. At the end of their gold medal performance, I thought Sergei's breathing was odd. He seemed to be gasping for air and thought he might have a heart attack. I thought nothing of it until all those months later when he died. Doctors were stumped. But if you read Katia's book, there were so many clues. His father died at a relatively young age from a heart attack, I believe. Then Sergei had multiple health issues. He had constant back and shoulder pain. He had high cholesterol. Doctors obtained samples of his blood and discovered he had a rare genetic predisposition to clots. They call it the "Grinkov factor." They say he had the arteries of a 70-year-old. I think Sergei probably suspected but didn't want to disappoint Katia. He was like that.
It’s almost 26 years since he died. I was only 25 years old. I knew he died but I didn’t know it was from a heart attack. How I love watching them skate. They were and always be my favorite couple ice skaters⛸.
I got to see Katia & Sergei skate in Houston and they skated like they were in the air , elegant and smooth! You couldn't hear their skates touch the ice!
I've always thought that he knew somehow or another that something was wrong but didn't want to spoil it for Katia. When you're that young you feel invincible. It was just so sad but even now, she speaks of him with love.
Me too, he had so many issues leading up to it. In Katia's book she said that first his back started to bother him so bad that they went to multiple doctors and still it never got treated, then his shoulder started to hurt a lot as well and again, they went to multiple doctors, also she said a nerve in his foot was being pinched and the nerve became so dead he couldn't even walk or run properly and couldn't get his foot into his boot. All of this occurred around the same time and I know athletes can have pains, especially ones that do lifting of any sorts but hearing that concerned me and i'm not even a doctor. while all this was happening they were still training ( only taking a short break after he was operated on ) and that he actually started to work out even more. Very sad, she also said ( before he died ) that she worried he would not take his health seriously enough ( its in her book somewhere towards the end ) because for him taking care of her and daria was the most important thing regardless of how he was feeling
It was his time... his father died at early 50’s. Absolute shame.. He loved his life, in love with his wife and enthralled with his child.. everything we all wish for. God Bless you Sergei and your grieving family.
A friend died suddenly of a heart attack at the age of 38. She had been complaining of fatigue and discomfort for weeks, and had spent a few days in hospital for extensive tests....all tests pointed to full health. 2 days after leaving the hospital, she complained of a sore back and opted to sleep on the couch. The next morning, when her husband checked on her, she stood up and collapsed...dead. We were all shocked and horrified.
I loved to watch him during their throws. I loved his follow through. He didn't come to a halting, screeching, toe-pick, chuck the girl throw like so many of the male pair skaters. Just speed, throw, follow through, present. So beautiful. So effortless looking. He was the best male pair skater.
Can you imagine being so heart broken she couldn’t even cry. She literally said she was shock for years. Wow. If you notice her face was normal like she wasn’t even at a funeral. She literally was numb.
I remember this too well knowing it was all but this dream sadly isn't that I was shocked to learn of his passing on the news early this morning, even the hearts goes out towards his family even friends of the figure skating community of his passing.
His artery was clogged down to a pinpoint. If his heart had been working at full capacity and he had all the oxygen, he would have been able to throw his partner into the next county and jump through the roof of the rink. It was never his strength that was his most obvious point, it was the gentleness with Ekaterina. The exhibition skate they did at Lillehammer had some of the loveliest lifts I’ve ever seen.
By God's Grace Sergei wasn't holding Ekaterina when he collapsed. I wonder.did he have an idea he was about to pass out and strove to make sure he was skating on his own . So tragic but thanks be to God even at his last breath he protected his. beloved Ekaterina. 💞💜🥀💛🙏
Genetically predisposed to heart disease...his Father's passing at an early age was a huge red flag for all the Males in the Family. I was young when this happened and did not have the knowledge I have acquired thus...It was sad then and is still very sad to revisit.

You'd think that with the time and work that go into Olympic athletes they'd be given the best in examination and treatment to prevent this kind of collapse.
It's happening to legend basketball player Pete Mavarich, NASCAR legend drivers Dale Earnhardt, WWE Hall of Fame Andre the Giant, actor Sammy Davis Jr., actor/comedian Redd Foxx, actor/comedian John Candy, actor/comedian John Ritter, basketball player Hank Gathers, and ice skating Segrei Grinkov.
I can't believe how weren't any signs of blood circulation problems in his heart and arteries. Professionally they need too have extensive medical check ups every year, including echocardiogram etcetc, specially also when his father died young of heart failure. It's a medical negligence.
For 5 months, he kept on complaining about his back pain that he went to several doctors for consultation and even treatement. But he was misdiagnosed. Maybe for a young athlete who was in great shape, heart disease would be the last thing in mind. It was later found out through posthumous tests that it was due to genetic condition. He had a gene variant that causes blood clots and predisposed him to early-onset heart attacks. :(
So sad ... who in their right mind does the word overs .? Instead of writing skaters name writes sergei green cubs . This happens to allot of videos ,someones messes up the word overs , some other person or firm needs to add the word overs.
His father also died young from the same thing. Is Why it's so important for your doctor to know your family's medical history, especially when its concerning cardiovascular system. Men seem to have these catastrophic heart attacks more than woman. What a horrible tragedy! I'm usually not a mushy person but watching those 2 skate made me think, I guess true love does exist, you just need to find that person to make it true. This was like a Shakespearean tragedy. Katya did move on a d had married another Russian skater and that blew up. Now she is with a Canadian pairs guy, David Pelletier. There is videos with them both skating together. She always has a beaming smile on her face when she is up in the air like that. I would be screaming my lungs out to put me the F down ! LOLOL
Claro que sí tuvo síntomas porque los juegos olímpicos del 94 No podia respirar y se vio muy claramente y entonces no hicieron nada su cuerpo comenzó a colapsar cuándo terminó la competencia es muy extraño
It was too late. He was essentially dead when he hit the ice. His main coronary artery was totally occluded!!! This kind of heart attack is called a "widow-maker" since it kills the muscle of the whole front of the heart, which equals no oxygen to the brain!
There are two other possibilities that could have caused this in a young and healthy individual. Firstly, the possibility of genetically chronic high cholesterol and secondly, underlying bleeding or clotting disorder.
You are correct. In fact, the first possibility you mentioned was what the doctors in the US found out in the autopsy and and upon further study of his blood sample.
Beautiful couple, very talented, their love lives on in the heart of their daughter. Wonder if there’s any further discussion of this incident. It’s not common that people with so much oversight by medical professionals and access to health resources would go undiagnosed and untreated… hmm… I thought long QT syndrome at first, then possibly Russian authoritarian/forced doping… still think that played a role.
In a comment above, Johns-Hopkins Hospital tested his blood 2 months after he died and found that he had a defective gene which made platelets stick together more easily. He was literally born to die. The only way to catch this early would have been an Echocardiogram(ultrasound of the heart). There was no reason to do one at his age. Maybe when he was about 40 since his father died at age 52.
Family history of men dying before the age of 60. Especially when they are as young as Sergei Grinkov was. It was genetic. Unfortunately it's a terrible feeling that to not experience any signs of a heart attack in a man who seemed to be completely unstoppable until fate revealed it's ugly head. There is a family history of heart disease especially in the paternal side, when a gene causing a genetic defect is revealed. If Sergei was tested prior to his father's passing, he might have a better chance of survival. I know because my dad's paternal family had a history of heart disease..... and that my dad's a geneticist.
How terrible. For him, for her, for their child..They were a superb pair. But Why did a young man died that way? It does happen, yes, but l can' t stop myself from thinking of all the drugs scandals wich occured in Russia, even recently, in 2022 The ice dancers Papadakis and Cizeron have been compared to them, so l searched for G/G : besides the fact they both chose the moonlight sonata at Olympics, and of course they both were fusionnal on ice, there are diffrences of course, the first one is that we are comparing a pair couple and an ice dancers couple. I will keep my feelings for myself, regarding what happened to Grinkov. A 28 years old man simply does Not dies of a heart attack, that way.
His autopsy was done in the US. Even his blood samples were studied there, and doctors discovered that his clogged arteries was due to a genetic defect. There was no drugs found in his system.
As the Ice and freezing snow makes its presence, it always calls for a line to be in ages, as a Sergei that skates the states. Grandeur and Congratulateur is certainly another Pasteur of Congratulateur. /././././RHD/G.M Industries. DON'T DELETE, this is IMPORTANT. Thank you.
Do you know that meeting and having any sort of romantic or sexual relationship are entirely different things…y’all are so chronically online If you want to talk about whether you think 17 and 21 is an inappropriate age difference to start dating then that’s another story.
@@jamiejoonks sorry I meant back then this was no big deal. Today I think it’s a bit strange. Especially considering that the mutual feelings started when she was 16, and he 21. That is a massive age gap in terms of maturity. 24 and 28 is not that much but 16 and 21 is quite shocking
He treated her like a pesky, kid sister until she was grown up. It's not unusual for people to grow up and fall in love. You're a troll to suggest that two kids competing in a sport were somehow perverted. Weirdo.

Years later this is still heartbreaking. When he and Katia were skating, that was like the Golden Age. They are definitely legends.
He was magnificent. A phenomenal skater, incredibly gorgeous. Like no other male figure skater then or since.
I remember the 90s all I did was watch figure skating. These 2 were my favorite pair both beautiful. What a love story.

Shoulder and back pain. With his family history, I would say maybe the doctors were neglectful. These are classic heart attack symptoms.
True. The back pain he was feeling 5 months until his death could be angina.

Thank you.

How many kids they really had? Once we saw one daughter then two,
Ekatarina remmarried with Ilia Kulik after and divorced later, the other daughter is his.....
Ekaterina has two daughters (w/ Sergei and Ilia Kulik) and one step son (w/ David Pelletier.)
Sergei had one daughter.
Eat right, exercise, die anyway...
Wasnt this a blot clot?
This is very strange. He would not be blue straight away. I'm from a medical family. Just sounds odd to me ❤
Perhaps because he was on the ice.

He was clean.
He literally met her when she was 11 that’s grooming yall that’s nasty😂
Do you know that meeting and having any sort of romantic or sexual relationship are entirely different things…y’all are so chronically online
If you want to talk about whether you think 17 and 21 is an inappropriate age difference to start dating then that’s another story.
@@jamiejoonks Katia consented, so there is no issue with her being 17 when they started dating no matter how old he was
@@toxic-low-key-ghost7934 that’s not true but okay 😅 minors can’t consent. But place and time do play a factor, so I guess it’s all subjective.
Weirdo.
I miss these two, and I had the pleasure of seeing one of their last performances before Sergei's death. They were breathtaking.
Same here I saw them perform live the summer of that sad year.
WOW that would be sooo hard.
I saw them with Stars on Ice in February and I think October at a professional skating event, their last ever performance live.
