    So sad. Too young to die. My older brother suddenly died of a heart attack at age 23. No drugs, no alcohol, healthy active lifestyle, ate healthy. Traumatizing and devastating to this day so I could imagine that all of his family and friends and fans feel to this day. Live life everyday to the best. RIP.

      The pain of loosing someone so talented so young so handsome is heartbreaking.
      At least he passed doing what he loved with his beautiful wife beside him.
      28ys old and 28yrs have passed and the pain is still unbrarable. Thankfully we can still see them on CZcams. Skating with Mario Lanza singing is a double blessing. A statue of him would be magnificent never to be forgotten. 💙 💙

    After we lost Sergei i could no longer watch figure skating. This year i discovered CZcams and, to my total delight, found that i could again watch this Magical Pair skate. It has been over 25 years and I still miss the elegance, the grace, the strength, and the speed that is G&G. And I can watch skating once again. There is no one that can come close to Gordeeva AND Grinkov.

      I lost my oldest brother at the age of 48 in 2007 of a massive heart attack while out on a group wreck dive scuba diving 3 miles from shore on Lake Michigan (Chicago). Efforts to revive him failed and he was pronounced dead at Northwestern Hospital just before noon August 5, 2007. His last dive log entry the morning of his death was "light head". I also was the last person he spoke to 24 hrs earlier. All over the Chicago news. It was awful.

    Still breaks my heart after all these years. They were my favorite pairs couple. So graceful. I remember the Lillehammer games and rooting for them. I also remember what I was thinking at the time. At the end of their gold medal performance, I thought Sergei's breathing was odd. He seemed to be gasping for air and thought he might have a heart attack. I thought nothing of it until all those months later when he died. Doctors were stumped. But if you read Katia's book, there were so many clues. His father died at a relatively young age from a heart attack, I believe. Then Sergei had multiple health issues. He had constant back and shoulder pain. He had high cholesterol. Doctors obtained samples of his blood and discovered he had a rare genetic predisposition to clots. They call it the "Grinkov factor."
    They say he had the arteries of a 70-year-old. I think Sergei probably suspected but didn't want to disappoint Katia. He was like that.

    • @toxic-low-key-ghost7934
      @toxic-low-key-ghost7934 Před 2 lety +9

      Me too, he had so many issues leading up to it. In Katia's book she said that first his back started to bother him so bad that they went to multiple doctors and still it never got treated, then his shoulder started to hurt a lot as well and again, they went to multiple doctors, also she said a nerve in his foot was being pinched and the nerve became so dead he couldn't even walk or run properly and couldn't get his foot into his boot. All of this occurred around the same time and I know athletes can have pains, especially ones that do lifting of any sorts but hearing that concerned me and i'm not even a doctor. while all this was happening they were still training ( only taking a short break after he was operated on ) and that he actually started to work out even more. Very sad, she also said ( before he died ) that she worried he would not take his health seriously enough ( its in her book somewhere towards the end ) because for him taking care of her and daria was the most important thing regardless of how he was feeling

She had been complaining of fatigue and discomfort for weeks, and had spent a few days in hospital for extensive tests....all tests pointed to full health. 2 days after leaving the hospital, she complained of a sore back and opted to sleep on the couch. His artery was clogged down to a pinpoint. If his heart had been working at full capacity and he had all the oxygen, he would have been able to throw his partner into the next county and jump through the roof of the rink. It was never his strength that was his most obvious point, it was the gentleness with Ekaterina. The exhibition skate they did at Lillehammer had some of the loveliest lifts I’ve ever seen.

      For 5 months, he kept on complaining about his back pain that he went to several doctors for consultation and even treatement. But he was misdiagnosed. Maybe for a young athlete who was in great shape, heart disease would be the last thing in mind. It was later found out through posthumous tests that it was due to genetic condition. He had a gene variant that causes blood clots and predisposed him to early-onset heart attacks. :(

      In a comment above, Johns-Hopkins Hospital tested his blood 2 months after he died and found that he had a defective gene which made platelets stick together more easily. He was literally born to die. The only way to catch this early would have been an Echocardiogram(ultrasound of the heart). There was no reason to do one at his age. Maybe when he was about 40 since his father died at age 52.

    Family history of men dying before the age of 60. Especially when they are as young as Sergei Grinkov was. It was genetic. Unfortunately it's a terrible feeling that to not experience any signs of a heart attack in a man who seemed to be completely unstoppable until fate revealed it's ugly head. There is a family history of heart disease especially in the paternal side, when a gene causing a genetic defect is revealed. If Sergei was tested prior to his father's passing, he might have a better chance of survival. I know because my dad's paternal family had a history of heart disease..... and that my dad's a geneticist.

    How terrible. For him, for her, for their child..They were a superb pair. But Why did a young man died that way? It does happen, yes, but l can' t stop myself from thinking of all the drugs scandals wich occured in Russia, even recently, in 2022
    The ice dancers Papadakis and Cizeron have been compared to them, so l searched for G/G : besides the fact they both chose the moonlight sonata at Olympics, and of course they both were fusionnal on ice, there are diffrences of course, the first one is that we are comparing a pair couple and an ice dancers couple. I will keep my feelings for myself, regarding what happened to Grinkov. A 28 years old man simply does Not dies of a heart attack, that way.

      His autopsy was done in the US. Even his blood samples were studied there, and doctors discovered that his clogged arteries was due to a genetic defect. There was no drugs found in his system.
