    The IVT in my 2020 Hyundai Elantra is ridiculously jerky and unsmooth! On the highway, it's actually really nice. But around town, it bogs down for a second or two when I first press the accelerator, then harshly jerks to 2000 RPM, causing the car to buck. It has no trouble accelerating once it actually hits 2000 RPM, but there's a flat spot around 1500 RPM that creates poor drivability at low speeds. It also refuses to decelerate while coasting. My car is great otherwise...but that IVT, not smooth at all.

    I'm leasing the 2020 value edition. Has start button, sun roof, lane keep, lane departure warning that also breaks if you want to switch lanes and it senses a car is coming, collision prevention. Heated seats. The only thing missing from this model and the Limited is that the limited has leather, adaptive cruise control, button controlled seats, and I believe a heads up display and a smaller engine but one that's turbo charged. I got a COVID-19 discount. I cranked the price down to high 18k new. Paid 0 down, leasing it for 36 months, for less than 290 a month with 15k mile allowance. Great compact, nimble car. Has the drive change features, from the sport, smart and normal. I put it on sport, turn off traction control and manually " shift". That little 2.0 feels zippy for 150 hp and 140 torque.

    Wow! I bought the new 2018 Elentra with the dual clutch 7 speed automatic, primarily because it didn't have the CVT / IVT style transmission. I love it! Its characteristics are somewhat like a manual that you don't have to shift yourself. And boy is it quick for a 1.6L. When I buy again, I guess I'll be searching another model or manufacturer that doesn't install these transmission. ...Isn't it an Oxymoron to install a CVT / IVT transmission into a car that badges "Sport"? Though it appears Hyundai isn't doing it with their 2020 Sport model, I do believe many other manufacturers are. There is little chance these transmissions will survive very many hard starts that younger generation put these cars through, especially in hilly locals. I'll gladly give up a mpg or two for a reliable transmission. Once out of warranty, the car owner is in for a real shocker as these transmissions being to fail! $$$$$$

    • @zack6892
      @zack6892 Před 4 lety +1

      Cvt transmissions are nothing new and in fact the "belt" shares more characteristics with a chain then a rubber belt. Ideally these CVT are actually easier to work on then a gear driven trans and perform better I mean look at F1 racing they banned the continuously variable transmission from the sport as it blew manual cars out of the water on its first pass. I for one am glad to see the effort into developing CVT transmissions they already use them in high performance ATV and they are so easy to work on a teenager could do it. Not to mention they allow for greater tuning to get optimal performance the fact is if they continue putting them into sport vehicles I believe eventually they will surpass the dual clutch transmission just for the fact they are much more efficient.

    • @Avidiax
      @Avidiax Před 4 měsíci

      That's just a standard automatic transmission with a semi-manual override. You can hold a gear or shift manually up or down, but only in a limited range to protect the engine and transmission. Up or downshifts will also occur automatically, but only when hitting a high or low rev limit.
      As someone that learned on manual, I really miss this feature in automatic cars that don't have it. It makes it possible to plan acceleration for passing or control speed on downhills (downshift), and lets me apply throttle in some situations without getting the kickdown.

    2019 Hyundai Santa Fe, 8 gears shiftronic-Going to a trip in the mountains, on a wavy up amd down road, I realized the transmission shifts, quite often, through 8-7-6 gears going up and 6-7-8 going down. I know that frequent shifts gets the transmission hot, so I decided to go on manual and drive 30 miles on gear 6 alone - average rpm higher, of course ( because no cycling gears 7 and 8 ) - maybe up to 3500 rpm. Is that ok? ( so just one lower gear and higher rpm versus cycling quite fast through several other gears)

      @MicahHTX Před 4 lety +3

      You will burn your engine never drive with rpm to high for to long.

    • @ninemilliondollars
      @ninemilliondollars Před 4 lety +6

      RPM of 3500 is not going to hurt the engine. They are designed to work perfectly at much higher RPMs. You did the correct thing using manual and staying in the same gear to reduce the frequent shifts.

      Some wisecrackers here. 3500 RPM is not "high" RPM. So, you did the right thing on that hill climb, the only sensible thing, too.

    Whats the point of adding a variable transmission if you're just going to program it to act and sound like a conventional transmission? Why even give me the option to "switch gears" in manual mode?
    If you're gonna give it a soulless transmission, at least make it act like one. The way you program them right now makes them less efficient.

    Garbage. I’m driving a 2024 Hyundai Kona.This IVT transmission doesn’t shift smoothly. When needing to accelerate quickly there’s about a 5 seconds before the transmission catches up. Then the RPMs jump. IVT is nonsense. In theory it sounds good but in practice it’s garbage.

She thinks the transmission isn't going to last. She thinks the all wheel drive is wearing the tranny out sooner than later. They are very disappointed with their Subaru. Glad it got stolen and went back to Hyundai because they use regular automatics, but I guess when it’s time to replace my 2017 Elantra I will have to think twice.
