How to set the timing on a Yamaha XS400 motorcycle

    Your supposed to set points prior to ignition timing, If you need to move the points to get it timed correctly, the points were t correct.

    Get proper screwdrivers. Those are not Phillips screws. Use the screwdriver that came with the kit or buy a set of proper JIS screwdrivers. Phillips drivers will strip the head on a tight screw.

    That's not how you find the compression stroke, tdc yes. But not compression stoke. You need to make sure you're at tdc after the intake valve closes.

      Put a finger on the spark plug hole to determine compression stroke.
