Wild rabbits taught me this many years ago!
That sketch helped!
I’m glad! If you pinch where i did, you will only have 2 bottom branches, not 4 like the sketch. You’ll need to leave 2 sets of leaves behind. You can still have many branches up top if you deadhead. Hopefully that makes sense!🌱
Yeah that sketch was so helpful! And beautiful!
This is the BEST breakdown/teaching ever!!! Thank you!!
That was kind of you to say!! Thank you!🌱💚
Thank you for this helpful video 🙏🏻💮😊
This was super helpful and well spoken to make it easy to understand. I’ve been wondering when to pinch my flowers, Thank you!
You’re welcome! Thank you so much for the kind comment. Sending you lots of luck!🌱
Thank you for the information. This is my first time planting plug plant Zinnia's. Much appreciated your presentation.
Great tip! no pun intended
Thank you for the laugh and for taking the time to comment!🌱💚
@@crochetgardenrepeat I went straight out and pinched the tops off the babies after your advice. Thanks again from Central Ontario and enjoy the season!
Very good explanation on pinching. Thank you!
Thank you for taking the time to comment! I appreciate it!🌱💚
thank you for this, thumbs up! didn't realize cut tops could be rooted in water, now I can make quicker succession plantings! :)
You’re welcome! Thank you for taking the time to comment! Have fun growing your Zinnias!🌱💚
I always direct sow in the ground first or mid week of March. Every single one grow, as I'm speaking they are blooming! Zinnia are so easy to grow it literally grows every where in my garden and pots. They required lots of water though. Even drop seeds grow lol. I live in Phx Az zone 9. Zinnia does so well here. It bloom until if we get froze which we did last year. One of my favorite flowers to grow and they so beautiful!
Starting them indoors just guarantees no wildlife will eat them and earlier blooms. But they are so easy to direct sow too. I always recommend Zinnias! Hummingbirds love them too🌱💚
This is exactly what I wanted to know coz my seeding has grown too long with 4 set of leaves. I'll do the pinching today itself. Thanks a lot for this wonderful video. 🙏💚💚💚
You’re welcome! You can pinch above any of those sets. I’ll be making a video where I’ll compare pinching above different sets🌱💚
Great video. I grew zinnia for the first time this year and they did so well without doing this but I can’t wait to try this. I plan to grow so many more next year! I enjoyed them so much. Thanks for this video!
That’s wonderful! They are spectacular without pinching too! I don’t always pinch mine. The more “sets” you leave behind the more branching you’ll get. You are so welcome!🌱💚
Thank you, this helped me. I just collected 2 jars of zinnia seeds which I will donate to a seed organization in my county.
You’re welcome! I’m glad it helped. That is awesome!🌱💚
Thank you.... this is my first year planting Zinnias... great info
You’re welcome! Good luck on your first year!🌱💚
I kept admiring your nail colours through the video. I have just got two zinnia seedlings with the cotyledons. Well pinch them in time. Thank you.
Thank you so much! That is my go-to nail color lol😍 Just know that if you pinch where I did it will not look like the drawing, you need to leave 2 sets of true leaves behind to look like the drawing. I’m still learning lol🌱💚
Thank you! This is what I was searching for. 😊
You’re welcome!🌱🧶
Awesome job❤️
Thank you!💚
Wow. Thanks for explaining
You’re very welcome!🌱💚

You're welcome!
Really well explained thank you
You’re welcome!🌱
Wild rabbits taught me this many years ago!
That’s pretty cool! Must have been a gardener in a past life🌱💚
Can you do this to container variety Zinnias?
This is great! Like you state elsewhere it is best to leave at least 2 sets of leaves behind. Then there is a possibility o a greater number of branches. By about how much time does this clipping delay blooming? Did you notice? Thanks so much!
Thank you! It delays about 2-3 weeks. It varies depending on your weather, the amount of sun and water they receive. So if you want flowers asap, don’t pinch them at all.
@@crochetgardenrepeat Thanks!
I’m still sort of a gardening newbie, can we do this with Marigolds too? I got really into planting marigolds from seed this past summer and was planning to start them up in the spring.
Are there any flowers that you know of that don’t like having this done or can this be something that you can do across the board?
Welcome to gardening! I’m still learning too, I am by no means an expert lol. I would recommend not taking it down to the first set of leaves (like the video). Leave at least 2 sets behind. Yes you can do this with marigolds! Not everything can be pinched. Most sunflowers can’t, as well as delphiniums, ranunculus, statice, foxglove and many more. You can google search all varieties just to be sure first. But A LOT can be pinched! Have fun!🌱💚
So if I pinch and propagate, do I also pinch the planted tops after growing on?
Yes, you can. It delays flowering even longer on them, so you wouldn’t want to pinch super late in the summer🌱💚
Thank you!! What soil do you use
You’re welcome! I use “seed starting soil” from either Miracle Grow or Jiffy brand🌱💚
Hi can I ask you what should I do if my zinnia has little green eggs/insects under the leaves? Than you❤
Put a leaf with the insects/eggs into a sealed ziploc bag and take it to a garden center/greenhouse. They will be able to tell you what it is and what to do🌱💚
Is deadheading just removing the bloom? Also-is pinching or leaving as is better when trying to plant zinnias from seed in containers?
Yes, that is deadheading. Pinching depends on the look you want in the end. If you want super tall zinnias (like as a backdrop), then don’t pinch them. They may not be sturdy stems though. If you want more flowers and a bushier/fuller look, then pinch them. I would say to pinch them for containers. I hope that helps!🌱💚
@@crochetgardenrepeat can you pinch them again later on for even more stems to shoot out?
Yes you sure can! You can do that with a lot of annuals too🌱💚
Please help me with the soil you are using. Mine is laggy not growing and some even stretching...
Any “Seed Starting Soil” works. I use either Miracle Grow or Jiffy brand. If they are leggy and stretching, that is a lighting issue. It means they aren’t getting enough light. Grow lights should be on for 14-16 hours and hanging 3-4 inches above the seedlings. If you are using a window, you need to find a sunnier window🌱💚
So when u cut them down and put them in water they will root?
Yes, I have better luck in soil, but water works. If you have rooting hormone, that helps too.
How long did your seeds to take get to that size? Mine are tiny after 3w.
These are 36 days old. They should germinate in just 2-3 days. Temperature, lighting, and watering all factor in how fast they grow after that🌱💚
@@crochetgardenrepeat Thank you. I've been using grow lights since the weather is still cold in Seattle. What kind of soil do you use? Potting mix or something else?
After you pinch them, how long until new branches emerge?
Just a couple days. The video was on April 18th and there’s an April 24th update at the end of the video with new growth🌱💚
When do I transplant zinnias? Can I do our before I pinch or pinch and then wait? Newbie here. :)
Transplant anytime after your average last frost date and after they are hardened off. You can also pinch anytime, in any order, it doesn’t matter. They are easy tough plants🌱💚
@@crochetgardenrepeat great thank you so much! Wish me luck with the cuttings. The seedlings are going into their pots today. :)
@@crochetgardenrepeat thank you so much for your advice. Another question: last year my zinnias got overwhelmed by powdery mildew towards the end of summer. Is there a preventative measure I can take this year? I have some sprays that are supposed to help but once it didn’t hold it off for very long.
@@EffSharp Watering in the mornings, so that they have all day to air dry. Watering close to the base of each plant instead of watering the entire plant. People set up drip systems if that is too much work. Good luck!🌱💚
How long does the top takes to root it in the soil?
If you use rooting hormone, it should be within a few days. It’ll take a few days longer than that if you don’t use anything. Covering them with an upside down ziploc or bag will help keep the soil moist (just like germinating seeds)🌱💚
@@crochetgardenrepeat Thank you, its fast! I am soooo doing this next week.
Will double my plants.
