  • In preparation for hosting a comedy event with John Hodgman for this year's San Francisco Sketchfest, Adam has to build a Spin-A-Wheel random picker from scratch. It's going to allow him to use some new machining materials, engineer the wheel's movement to spin evenly, and build a way for the spinner to click through over 60 wooden pegs in a satisfying way. And with the event looming it has to actually be a one day build!

Watching him build the arrow and I have to wonder why not just mount an arrow at the bottom of the wheel not the top? Some wheels have them at the side, some bottom and some top. It seemed like extra work and time at tge top.

3:46 Putting the mass in a rim does increase the Polar Moment of Inertia. This makes it require more force to accelerate (and decelerate) to (and from) a given angular velocity (say RPM).
Your intuition is spot-on, provided long spin time is the actual desired trait.
Starting high and then adjusting the force the decelerating arrow applies leaves the broadest calibration window.

Both resin infused paper and resin infused cloth are sold as micarta as can be carbon fiber, fiberglass, and other materials. Micarta was a brand name created by westinghouse in 1910. As of 2003 Norplex bought the rights and is the current manufacture, though I believe other companies manufacture "generic" versions.

Seeing Adam's wheel made me remember the gigantic one the owner of the old Empire Theater used to bring out on stage between movies so his patrons would have a chance at the cash prizes he gave out every night. I saw so many movies there, and often wish it had not burned up in that fire.

I should build one of those and put it on my desk. When the supervisor comes by to ask me to do something I could have him spin the wheel.

Depending on the resin used, that block of micarta at 7:00 should be beastly.

Ohh, got to love the 3M Cubitron sandpaper. Those and the sanding disks are the puppy's parts.

It has been my experience that in order to get a Jacobs chuck to grip properly and prevent spinning on the bit, it is best to tighten it with the key in at least 2 of the 3 possible holes. 3 is always better. I also feel like this makes the bits run truer.

Adam, the part I love to watch is how you gobs out your builds, as well as how you solve your design and build problems. One thought on the peg spacing process. I saw you chose to figure out the spacing based on the circumference of the wheel… why wouldn’t you use a peg number that you want to use, say 60 instead of 63 and the divide the 60 into 360, then each peg is separated by 6 degree of angle? Then you could of used your milling machine and your indexing head, turned so the shaft was facing up. I enjoy seeing you use the milling machine. It has been many years since I used one.

@James Albrecht was wondering about that. Thought it was perhaps "slang" I was not familiar with.
Turns out it was probably just 'spell check' being WEIRD !? LOL !
My spell check never lets me use the word "FOR", always 'corrects' to "FOE". I DO wonder how many enemies my spellcheck thinks I possess?!

I was screaming 64! or 72! Give yourself more options for dividing it out with equal segments...
