Yeah, I'm not sure why the shape matters unless the shape is dictated by religion. Which it isn't. So why does this matter?
In most designs, form follows function. So I would think the modern bonnet is just the most effective hair covering, least likely to slip off, that people have come up with yet. And that when someone figures out a better design, everyone will switch to that because it's a better design.

Growing up in a rural town in the Southern US in the early 90s, every woman I knew over the age of 30 at the time had multiple bonnets, regardless of race: sleep bonnets, going to the store on a windy day bonnets, those mesh bonnets that go over rollers, plastic rain bonnets, etc.
Your collection of bonnets and need for situational bonnets really just reflected how much time, care, and money you were putting into your hair and its appearance. Simple as that.

The reason is because when cars came in to use a bonnet was worn to keep heads warm and protect hair, that's how far back bonnets go in British fashion.

Piercings,Tattoos, wigs, braids/hair extensions/ you name it- are as old as human history and developed in every known ancient culture independently without those folks ever being able to meet- different styles, sure - as they were depending on climate/hair&skin types/available resources etc etc.
It’s HUMAN nature to take care of our (compared to other species somewhat boring and also inconvenient) bodies and to express (tribe, religion, status(…)) through sometimes very weird stuff.
WHY TF can’t we all celebrate how amazingly it shows that we all are humans with the same great (or silly) ideas, no matter what skin colour or hair type we happened to be born with. isn’t that what we need to overcome?? Let’s agree on “humans were using bonnets first” (if ever your pet wants to argue about that)
      Think about it as bread.
At one point all over this planet many individuals decided independently to grind a local plant, mix it with water and fire it.
May it be a Chapati,a Tortilla or “fill in your local type of flat bread”. it’s ok if we eat them all, we have to make sure that everyone gets some and I really don’t care who’s ancestors made it first ON PLANET EARTH

It started with wax based pomade for my pixie haircut because I didn’t like how it looked gelled, and texture paste wasn’t a thing in the ‘90s. Then it was leave in conditioner when I started growing it out to keep it healthy so I could go longer between haircuts. But if you look up “silk bonnet” or “silk pillowcase”, then other than a few dodgy businesses, most of those will be real silk (not polyester).
Also silk scrunches and hairbands are great as they don’t seem to leave “dints” in the hair (also they’re comfy to wear).
You want to avoid plastic anything for your hair (hairbrushes, hair ties, pillowcases, bonnets, etc) as they will all cause frizz as plastic attracts energy like that. Dude, for the first time since 1995 I decided to grow my hair out, and it did not go well y'all. Maybe it was all those years of way too much bleach and punky color, or maybe it was just something in my genes, but my hair was breaking off constantly. Just sleeping on a cotton pillowcase would have my hair breaking off in chunks. I just want the long dark hair of my Indigenous ancestors instead of the bright blue spiked mohawk of my punk rock days, but my hair fought back hard. The only thing that has allowed me to have the silky dark locks below my shoulders is keeping my hair protected. This satin bonnet (a super cheap one from the local store) has allowed me to start my hair journey. I think I gotta buy a better one to finish it. And yeah, I will definitely wear it out for a quick trip to the store or whatever. I just want to have the traditional hair of my ancestors, and this bonnet is the only thing that will help me get there. Some people want to hate on me for it, fine. I just want to grow my hair.

I am sorry but the this is only for people of such and such color or for white or black or red people or whatever discussions are starting to be really annoying. If a person (man or woman) want's to do something good for their hair and they find that something someone else came up with is nice and helps and makes their life a lot easier... why do people hate on that? I seriously do not understand why haircare is a point of fighting these days. I mean the Geisha literally sleep on a wooden pillar pillow thingy to protect their crazy exhausting to make hairstyle for multiple days and keep it in form and if someone else wants to do that so let them do it.
Same with bonnets, hair caps, shampoos and what not. Let people just wear what helps them and gives them a better feeling about something that is obviously important to them to do.
Also really love the look of your bonnets Itsmecc. They look super comfy and stylish.

Head and hair coverings go back thousands of years. Sometimes it was for fashion, but mostly for hair protection, care and modesty. Many cultural and religious practices advocate head coverings. As women... not what color or anything else you may be, but as women, we should be supporting one another and not dividing ourselves. Be beautiful my beautiful friends!

Silk bonnets saved my huge, white curly hair. My mom never learned how to care for her hair, so I had to educate myself. I wish I could give a bonnet to my teenage self! She needed it so bad!

"The only people telling you it's okay to wear a bonnet is the people who make and sell bonnets." + "The majority are telling you not to wear bonnets." So what, does she just not want bonnet businesses to succeed? that's what I'm picking up from this 😂. To succeed in business, you cannot tell specific people that it's not for them. Imagine selling cookies or something and then someone asks for one box, and then someone tells that customer the cookies aren't for them. Aside from normal rudeness, it is also disrespectful to the one selling cookies.

  • @Thenamaree
    @Thenamaree Před měsícem +1

I really don't want to offend anyone here, but it might make sense to first look into the history of the bonnet before posting something on TikTok or wherever you like.
100 years ago it was completely normal for every woman, whether white, colored or with colorful spots, to wear a night cap to bed so that her hair didn't get messed up or the hairstyle was ruined. Most of the time these night caps were in the shape of a bonnet. The word bonnet comes from French and means lid. Lid because a round piece of fabric was used, which was adjusted to the correct fit with a band. I won't be so mean as to ask who appropriated what historically.
But no matter how you look at it, historical or current, a bonnet has to do with hair care. It is not a part with which one can or should have a "race discussion".

Is she appropriating culture from tribes in the Amazon basin that pierce their faces like that? Seriously....in the 1700's white women wore bonnets.....their hair was packed with tallow (animal fat) and powder...bonnets kept all that together...its not appropriation, unless everything is...culture is meant to be shared.

Girl, what shape is my bonnet supposed to be? Is a triangle better? I don't want to appropriate anyone's culture, but also European women have been wearing bonnets since... a long time. Women used to wear them regularly throughout history to protect their hair when bathing was less common, and kept hair styled in curls or braids for a long time. They helped protect us from lice. They were used for modesty in some cultures (Puritan, the Amish still use them). Also, does no one remember old 50s grannies in the robes and the bonnet caps with curlers underneath? I will never, ever deny that bonnets are part of black culture... but they are part of European history too. I think there was a brief period in the 60s-90s where some people abandoned the practice, but the tradition of various European women using bonnets is a very old one. It's hair protection. Anyone who wants to protect their hair should be allowed and encouraged to use one.

These people really just want to claim things that their race didn't invent. Hairstyles too,
    "braids is a black thing"
no it's not. For example, Vikings (both male and female) had their hair in braids. And they aren't black. And braids was a very popular hairstyle for Europeans and many other cultures back then and still now.
