I drove a 2012 GM Equinox in Moran WY, 🏞 in 2020, Grand Teton National Park. The SUV was terrible. It would stall out, break often. It had approx 80000mi total. We used 3 GM Equinox SUVs & 1 2013 Ford Escape. I was not impressed by the Equinox. For context, I briefly did a security post, Aug 2021, in a 2018 Equinox. It seemed a bit better but had 30000mi.

Hi all, I do consulting work in the SCM sector, just want to give you a little perspective on why the auto sector - in fact many sectors in the US and indeed the world - are experiencing so many shortages / delays of product. Simply, a combination of slow ramp up for critical component production in Asia (Covid issues again), Covid related temporary closures of ports and other transport hubs has intersected with a far stronger than expected rebound in US demand, to create a perfect storm of too much demand and not enough supply. And on top of that, ships are full...and often waiting weeks outside ports. And when they do make it to the berths, often there are not enough trucks and not enough drivers. And on top of that, this messy situation is being exacerbated by many warehouses being overstocked - the reason being is that it usually makes no sense to commence assembly of parts unless all parts are on hand in the right timeframe/sequence. This creates a situation where shipping containers are used for storage...costly, and exacerbating a container imbalance around the world.
Keep in mind, however, that many, maybe most components are being delivered in the needed quantities in a (reasonably) timely manner to where they are required...but that is pretty much not going to help in terms of a saleable end product: even if you get 85% of the components you need, that 15% problem is going to mean you are 100% not going to be able to make a saleable product - alternative suppliers are in the same boat, safety stock was exhausted ages ago for most companies and redesigns to lessen reliance on certain components often take years to validate.
So...no new cars to meet demand. OK...then people go to lightly used cars...and that is why you are seeing insane price rises across the board - a cascading effect that will take at least another year to resolve.
Lean production techniques and especially Just In Time manufacturing always takes a hit with huge, unexpected shocks, but it has delivered quality, lowest costs and profitability for decades. But moving forward, we may see a greater emphasis in more safety stock than prior, at least for a time.
Meantime, wishing you all the best of luck.

Ditto. I'm in embedded systems engineering (ie, all the small computers that run your cars), and getting any sort of parts is basically nigh impossible.
Foundries can't get raw materials fast enough, they themselves are limited on manpower, add in the SCM issues with shipping and warehousing......building a usable end product becomes an adventure in insanity.
We've got several high profile laser projects that are now weeeelll past original dates because of this nonsense, despite us stockpiling a LOT of the parts when we saw this coming.
As a personal note of how bad this has been. Ordered a Tenere 700 in Sept. I didn't get it until late March this year. Was held up over the ECU and windshield. The dealer I buy powersports stuff from usually has about 150+ ATVs and bikes on their floor. They had 10 including mine. They were very cool in honoring the original pricing though....already went back and bought a second bike because of it lol.

What we need is to have our Military temporarily haul stuff to help the economy keep going. Soldier is getting paid either way, so have them run loads as that be good training when they do that elsewhere in a battle situation. Also get people to work the docks etc...it's not the time to "lock down" again it's a time to get people back to work. And for chips etc we need to help company build facilities here int he US and expand HERE. Joe Biden is clueless but then again he doesn't even know his name most days.

But, whatever the cost, he got us inventory. He and his brother (his brother owned the Buick dealership across the street) would go to the extraordinary. You would have enjoyed the time when most cars offered 15 paint colors, 10 vinyl roof colors, and 4 or 5 interior colors. I'm in retail and we use the same system right now. Yes I understand my prices are higher then normal but everyone has raised prices. I sell firearms and I have to have the unfortunate conversation with customers about ammo and gun prices. I tell many of them that prices aren't going to come down much at this point due to the overall market increase and because people were willing to pay insane prices on ammo for so long that it reset the standard market rate. Once a new market has been established it's unlikely it'll come down much. $15 a box for 9mm is most likely going to be the new normal forever.
