The galley is the compartment of a ship, train, or aircraft where food is cooked and prepared.[1] It can also refer to a land-based kitchen on a naval base, or, from a kitchen design point of view, to a straight design of the kitchen layout.
The Chief Cook: This is the highest level in the hierarchy of ship galley jobs. The chief cook is the one who is in-charge of the galley as a whole. He is also known as the Executive Cook. It is the chief cook’s responsibility to check for the menus and assign duties to other professionals working in the galley.
The Assistant Chief Cook: As the name suggests, the assistant chief cook is required to assist the chief cook in the planning and organising of meals and menus. Also the duty of the assistant chief cook extends to maintaining the presentation aspect of the meals and menus.
In this video, I will be giving you a guided tour of the MAERSK Ship. All the merchant navy aspirants going to join the life at sea will benefit a lot from this video, since the general layout of engine room on Cargo ships is more or less the same.
Merchant navy has various departments & I am from the Navigation department. I have recently been promoted to the rank of a 2nd Officer onboard Maersk Ship.
Enjoy the video & don't forget to give it a big thumbs up if you found the video informative .
Also for those who are new to the channel - I am Karanvir Singh Nayyar , a second officer in Maersk , vlogging my Life At Sea Journey.

The work of the two is priceless. If the food on the ships is right, the motivation of the entire crew is also right. Food good - work well 👏❤😊
We agree!
@@KaranvirSinghNayyar भईया हिन्दी भी बोलो
😢food;s are nice and tasty;}madhu😊
We had 3 galleys one for officers one for deck crew and one for engine crew. As a junior you had plenty of choices !
@@KaranvirSinghNayyar food are free for cadet or not
I’ve sailed with Abdul Tahir before while he was still a 2nd cook. He is a very good cook and has a good personality. He always cooked me filipino food and always left me food whenever i’m busy hahaha hope to sail with him again soon.
❤
iui.iiui
My farther was a captain at sea and he always said the 2 most important crew to appoint were the chief engineer (to keep the ship running) and then the cook (to keep the crew running) the memory made me smile :)
Haha he is almost right
Believe it or not. The only position on a ship that MUST be filled before sailing, is that of ships cook with the certificate to prove it.
You can get a time and distance waiver from the authorities for Capt., Chief., even Doctor, but not cook!!
If the chef is unhappy the crew are unhappy. When the chef is good and willing to accommodate the different likes and dislikes of a crew, that makes the entire ship company happy. Big point is how clean the place is very important particularly getting different foods on board from all ports. Great video.
No doubt tom
The salary of cook.. is that 2500 per week ?
@@andrewcorcoran7718 it wasn't said in the video, I'm guessing monthly.

Much respect for this video, the Chief and Second cook. My Dad (RIP) was a Purser for many years so seeing the Galley and provision stores bring back good memories. Thank you KSN!
RIP
Thank you for watching
Chief Chef seems like a very kind and happy person. We should all learn a thing or two from Chief Chef.
He is indeed
Chefs look lively and happy to cook and serve people..!!
which is really great.
They are!
The chief cook seems to be a very humble ,hard working personality.
Yes
Cooks are one of the most important members of the crew. Fresh and good food is the foundation of health. Great, informative video, Karan.
Absolutely
No alcohol, no women. Just work, eat, sleep. Hats off to these guys.
Thank you
@@KaranvirSinghNayyar sir sallery reval karo please

You just described my life.
It's just like mens hostel on ocean
Damn bro chefs play a vital role, no wonder why the crew must function as a team..... Moreover the team is like a family ♥️👏👏
Absolutely
@@KaranvirSinghNayyar Hi KSN. Wonderful to see how professional, happy and kind your shipmates are. These are inspiring videos.

Having a Indian cook is blessing 😊❤️
Indeed
It's heartwarming to see how the chefs strive to cook for different nationalities and have the interest of the crew at heart. The video quality and the editing is top notch as well!
Thank you John
They both appear to be great cooks and the chief cook has a wonderful smile. Thanks so much for sharing!
Your name is very unique my friend 😅
They are!
🙏🏽🙏🏽❤❤ "Shukrya to Abdul and Rahman"🙏🏽🙏🏽❤❤ The Smiles of Abdul & Rahman are priceless, the best shot of this documentary is the last one when it really shows the pride, passion and love for who they both are and what they do, providing food for all of you onboard❣ Grateful you made them The Stars of your fascinating footage dear Karanvir as it is time that the Galley Team is put in the spotlights: they work 9 months, 24/7, wholeheartedly to provide you with food & beverages, with passion & from their strong, loving hearts. Thank you for showing us viewers what working in the galley onboard is all about, including keeping it clean, tidy and safe at all times. Your Vlogs are well organised, meaningful and interesting. You're doing great work towards helping those aspiring seafarer students see the reality of this job and helping them to decide to plot their money in course or not. Respect & Kudos
Thank you so much!
Hi Karan,
Ive been a master mariner since early 90ties and currently involved as port captain and MWS. I would have really liked sailing with you your respect respect for the ocean and those working and living on it truly shines.
Bless you and good watch
Thank you sir
I have worked on a passenger ship for 15years ( princess cruises).I too worked in the Galley life is tough but once you get used to it its fun...thank you very much remembered my good old days at sea thank you and cheers to chef cook Abdul 2chef Rehmann for taking good care of the crew on board thank you once again
It is such a pleasure to meet the different crew members and see what they do. The work is hard, but all are very professional. My respects to all the crew members we have met, and to those we have yet to meet.
❤️
Thank you for the wonderful look into the gally and introducing us to the chief cook and second cook! These men are magicians, cooking beautiful food for different nationalities. Everything looks so good! I like that everyone eats in the same dining room on this ship. Everything looks very clean and comforting. Take care & be safe ❤️
Thank you for watching Tina
I have had the pleasure of sailing with some amazin cooks in Maersk. They food they make is delicious to both the eyes and the palate.
Truly blessed to be a part of this family :D Love from Danish flag
I used to cook in the navy and have been waiting for this so thank, very interesting. If the cooks are not happy the crew is not happy!
Life on ship seems like living in another world. Thank you for showing us❤️❤️
❤️
Mmmm all that delicious Indian food I'd be in heaven on the ship, I'm from the UK but Indian food is by far my favourite and eat loads of it and i personally think it's the best food in the world with so many different flavours.
Seriously impressed with the huge storage areas and the variety of food available.
I often wave at Maersk ships when I see them. Thank you for wonderful videos and showing us about the ships. Currently we are living in Houston Tx. God Bless and keep you safe!
Omg immense respect to these two guys, it's such a tough job and these guys are doing it smiling handling very well. Applause! I too belong to cook business so I know how hard of a job this is....
Indeed!
This video is what I love about youtube. Learning about a topic I might not have previously wondered about, and, being exposed to people who are truly passionate about what they do. Chief cook's smile and pride has made mine and I'm sure so many other peoples day. Great video, Thank you
Thank you for watching Dave
I can agree with you; the two most important department and individuals for ensuring the crews happiness while at sea.
They seem like great guys and hard working. Very wholesome video! All the best
Huge respect to these two guys 💥❤️
❤️
The kitchen is as important as the Engine room
A well fed staff is an asset for the ship
Hat's off to the chefs who serve the sailor of the ship without any break
Best Wishes Always for You & your colleagues
Have a safe voyage

Yes, you are right
I was in the delivery crew for Maersk Cape Town ...I was the 1st second cook ... Good to see her again, refreshed lots of good memories ..... ❤️
Awesome perspectives!
My dad was a skipper on the old tramp steamers in the 1940s - 60s.
Great Eastern Shipping was his line based out of Calcutta.
I love how the crew you interview are always so positive and so well spoken. Especially these two gentlemen.
It is 9:00 PM here now, otherwise I'd be on the phone ordering Indian Food delivery. Lots of good Indian food delivery places in Winnipeg, Canada. I'm so hungry for Indian food, but for now I'll just have to make do with biscuits.
You'll never go hungry, with all that delicious food 😋
You got that right!
Most relevant and informative episode of life at sea series. Indeed most well presented
Thanks for remembering me as a asst cook . I miss my work. And miss that galley. 🙏🏻
I booked two trips on freighters and on both occasions I enjoyed a comfortable quarters with a bathroom and satellite TV. The Mess Hall had definite hours BUT the food was wholesome, delicious and I never left there hungry. The crew were courteous and very friendly. Would I do i again? Yes, without hesitation.
That says a lot ❤️
Omg .. My friend. These last videos, super fantastic. I can believe. I was late seeing the engine room and before, this one I'm about on time. I had some health obstacles that kept me from seeing. I promise I was there in heart. Thank you so much for your time and tremdous effort. Your videos give me strength in these times. How much longer are you in the ship my friend? Take care and be safe please...
Thank you Matt

Much appreciated
Very hard working people I see to transport goods across the globe. Thank you all
Our pleasure!
We must give big salute to both cooks.. What a difficult work.. 🙏👌🤝Very mind blowing video.. Thanks karan✌
Thanks a ton
love the cook. what a cool guy. seems very friendly, very educational. ironically, it is the galley that is likely the least understood parts of the ship for most people. it is also good to note that the store room and food will be stocked significantly different from ship to ship. For Jones Act US ships where crew is fully American, you can expect the food and stores to be what you would find normally in USA.
Thanks for sharing
Man, oh Man, what a great video. That is very good respect for the Galley department. I have not begun my sailing yet because I left Merchant Marine training for Mother, but hopefully will be blessed to return. I keep watching your videos to keep my desire and passion going about this most beautiful industry. Hello from Miami.
Don't give up your dream!
Glad you enjoyed it!

Thanks for sharing! I enjoyed the walk through and this part of the cruise. I moved from Durban to USA and miss all the Curry dishes. And Samoosas, Bryani, etc. Salute to the Cooks/Chefs. Making sure the manpower is filled for a day's work strength.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I could live on board with all that great looking Indian (vegetarian) food

Both the Cooks seems quite lively and cheerful. KSN you are doing a good job of the videos and a Big thanks for Maersk by allowing their vessels to be featured in the series.❤
Thanks for watching
Brother plz make video on MBA shipping and port management career
Ok
As an engineer officer for forty odd years on cruise liners, tankers, survey ships, cross channel ferries and catamarans, and a barrer'load of others, lve never had food so beautifully served and delicious,as those that came from ships galleys, prepared by the hands of these dedicated chefs at sea! Caps off to all those head chefs and their staff!thanks chaps!
Only 2 cook and so much work!!! 😮 Hats off to them.❤
Good food promotes good morale, keeps crew working hard. Its not just the nutritional value of the food, but keeps the crew happy on those long days and weeks at sea. Their only diversion is their food and their books and videos/DVDs.
I love indian food. The potatoes and cauliflower curry is so good. Chicken curry. Love persian food too. Kebabs and basmati rice with saffron with fire roasted tomatoes. To die for. Oh i would work on the ship just to get a steady diet of this wonderful chef's cooking.
Hat's off to all of you and specially to the chef's on board...❤❤
They play a big role in the ship huge respect
You’re doing great work, my friend, truly appreciate that.

Thank you very much!
I'm really impressed by the safety and professionalism on the Maersk ship.
Thank you
Our sea travel is on Merchant vessels that have accommodations. Good experience, good crews. great food.
I would love to have that "galley" as my kitchen, fantastic. My husband and I enjoy Indian foods, and eat frequently. Thank you so much for providing such a detailed description of what goes on in the industrial ship. It is very interesting to me, thank you.
Another great video KSN. I am from Canada, so -16 is our regular winter weather 🥶.
Wow that’s damn cold
I like to color chart for the cutting boards. Having a freezer alarm is a great thing to have.
Years ago when I worked in a grocery store bakery. I use to get stuck in the big walk in freezer by a nasty co worker. We had no alarm for the freezer. You just knock and yell.
Ps tanks to chief and vice ! A bye from Italy especially to them !
You are really great and you are our inspiration thanks for telling us much things about merchant navy
