I know this is satire but for a very long time they were actively ok with adult content "go nuts show nuts whatever" is a direct quote from the community guidelines.
They didn't care until Apple took them off the app store because of the porn bots and child porn, which they've never done anything to try to combat. So they nuked all NSFW content in the most ineffective way possible, so that all the stuff they were trying to get rid of is still there but a big chunk of their user base isn't (and even more are pissed off)
There have neen some law changes in the use combating sex trafficking online.
Unfortunately the laws are more harmful than good, and make websites liable so a lot of them are changing their policies to be "extra safe". Most just arent announcing their changes.
Dumb thing is, it's done almost nothing to stop the porn bots. Account creation and uploading is automated by scripts. Take one down, a couple more take its place, and it doesn't require any effort. Porn bots are still flooding the site. The only difference now, is the porn isn't tagged as NSFW. That means more posts and accounts to manually review. Verizon execs who own and control Tumblr have only created more fruitless work for their employees, and made it more likely for users to encounter unlabeled porn they were avoiding.

I mean I used to have a Tumblr too, but maybe at least I can make a living out of ruining spammers' days and seeing porn at the same time.

But at the same time saving the best post and pictures for yourself or to post later on some secret account you have marked as safe and wholesome.
