    Mary Carol Winkler (born on December 10, 1973) is an American woman who was convicted of voluntary manslaughter in the 2006 shooting of her husband, Matthew Winkler, the pulpit minister at the Fourth Street Church of Christ in the small town of Selmer, Tennessee.
    -
    Winkler gained national attention because of public speculation regarding her motives and mental health, allegations of abuse by her husband, her brief flight from the state, and again for the brief length (150 days in jail plus 60 days in a mental health facility) of her sentence. In August 2008, Winkler was granted full custody of her three daughters.

    I remember when this trial was going on, it wasn’t until her testimony that I was on team Mary. That woman went through a lot of abuse. I’m glad that she didn’t spend time in prison.

    You have done a great job telling this story. It's very sad all the way around. But when people are abused they just blackout to that pain to survive. May God heal all of her pains and hurts. I remember that story. Keep doing what you're doing you doing awesome. 🤗

    I followed the story at the time and this is different from what I know about the story. To my knowledge, she had control of the family money and lost it to a scam and her husband was criticizing her about it. When he did not want to continue the conversation, she went and got the gun to make him stay and finish discussing the issue. When he turned to leave, that's when she shot him. The problem I had is that everything was based on hearsay. I remember people in their community saying that he did not seem like a abusive man. Her own daughters testified that they had never seem their father abuse their mother yet the jurors believed her at face value. I even remember a clip of her reaction in court when her defense was explaining the type of abusive man her husband was. She had a genuine surprise look on her face and said what clearly seemed like a: "WHAT!?!? Oh My God!".

    I am church of christ and even though the man is the head of the household he is also supposed to love his family like Christ did the church and give himself daily for his wife and kids. There is also supposed to be mutual respect for one another and consideration in all things. So you are right in a sense but then have left the other half out of the relationship.

    Religion ruined this marriage. Not Christianity which is about RELATIONSHIP. The husband is to LOVE his wife as Christ loved the church; not dominate her and rule over her like a dictator. LOVE her, cherish her, respect her, so she will feel the husbands love and THEN she in turn will respond to him with love and affection.

      There is way too much data out there now in 2023 for that comment "why can't they just leave" get divorced " to be accepted. Why don't you go and do some homework & answer that question yourself and Google it.. There's sooo many reasons why abuse victims can't" just leave" their abuser. Both physical, psychological and social factors play a huge part.Its very lazy & easy to say things that have no merit unless you have first hand knowledge of such a serious issue.I have no problem voicing an opinion but when that opinion harms & keeps victims stuck in very dangerous relationships that opinion is just as dangerous and because its OK for society to believe a perception..but think if you choose to believe a perception and be manipulated...you too are a victim of this abuser... go fact check please.

    I know this a statement usually frowned upon, and I understand why, but not only do I not blame her, I applaud her . Make no mistake the psychological literature on abusers like Matthew is very robust and you can damn near guarantee even if Mary would have been able to get away from him he either would have tracked her down and taken her out or he would have charmed his way into the life of another woman and started the cycle on her.

    I remember this case well and I understand the juror's predicament. I have a hard time with this case myself. I think the problem for me is that after killing her husband and knowing that he was dead, she not only ran but she took the gun with her. I think if she would have killed him out of self-perseverance and did the right thing by calling the police and waiting for them, it would have taken half of any doubt away that she could be innocent due to a domestic violence situation. I do think she suffered from PTSD because of her marriage, she had all of the signs. I just feel like she could have been right but made herself wrong by leaving and if she weren't caught, she would have probably never turned herself in. I do also think that your correct in saying that her husband was about to find out the financial situation which probably frightened her. That also tells me though that she had enough presence of mind to make a plan to do away with him. All I know is that I'm all over the board with this case which means I probably wouldn't make a good juror and I'm so glad I didn't have her future in my hands. All in all though, I do think the jurors came to the right verdict that still penalized her but not as severe as it could have been. Some justice was served. Great job on the video Randy. You need to get yourself a sun hat though. Protect yourself from that heat!

      @BIGBAKEONTHEMOVE  Před rokem +2

      Thanks so much Flo! Glad you got to watch it! I think her lack of trying to hide anything told me that she knew she would be caught or was to turn herself in. I think she cooked the story some to benefit herself but who wouldn’t right?? I mean in that situation ya know.
