- Elk hair caddis classic dry fly
I believe without any doubt that Al Troth imagined an effective fly to create it in the 50s, but not for a moment do I imagine that it would become one of the most effective dry flies in history in the world. Its simplicity in the tying, its materials of easy access and its structure that makes it an imitation of Tricoptero (caddis fly) ultra versatile for all types of waters, made it appear virally in all boxes of flies of fishermen from its appearance ... it is not uncommon to open a box of dry flies in Patagonia to find a handful of models and a large amount of Elk Hair Caddis ... well earned it has it.
Hook: mustad 94840, TMC 100, TMC 5210, Rise 300
Thread: UNI 8/0 or Danville 6/0
Body: olive antron dubbing
Hackle: brown whiting genetic hackle
Rib: ultra fine oval tinsel or gold wire
Wing: elk hair
Head: base of a hair wing, clipped.

Interesting. @3:48 a loop was tied around the elk hair before tying it down to the hook shank. I've never seen that before. It looks like it will keep the elk hair on top instead trying to spin around the hook shank.

Maestro, una pregunta de novato sobre el pelo de alce: se ocupa solamente la punta del pelo (punta mas fina)? el resto se desecha o tiene alguna utilidad?

Hola Sebastian, para este tipo de moscas se utiliza la punta y el resto se desecha, en general se hace esto. Saludos
Siempre he pensado que es un crimen ponerle alambre como rib a una mosca seca en vez de un hilo de atado un poco más grueso al tono de la mosca que es mucho más liviano.
Hola Omar, al ser tan fino el alambre de cobre no tiene incidencia en la flotabilidad pero le aporta una vida util mucho mas elevada que atarla con hilo, que en definitiva es lonque nos importa en este tipo de moscas ya que el elk le brinda una flotabilidad unica. Saludos
