Can I Be Gay and Catholic? (w/ Kim Zember)

  • When people ask Kim Zember the question, “How can I be gay and Catholic?” she responds with the question, “Why is ‘gay’ coming before your Christian identity?”
    Through her ministry, Overcome, (overcomemin.com/) Kim helps people with same-sex attraction overcome those desires and know they’re not alone. Central to overcoming that desire is denying ourselves, as Christ said:
    “If any man would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me” (Matthew 16:24).
    Kim knows what it’s like to have homosexual desires, and encourages those who have any kind of disordered sexual desire to go to Jesus and say, “Lord I surrender this desire to you.”
    As St. Paul writes to the Corinthians:
    “We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ” (2 Corinthians 10:5).
    Sinful thoughts are not sins until they lead to your giving into them, she says. What usually causes us to give in to them are their lies and false promises. Sinful sexual desires lie to us by saying they will make us happy, but giving into them never gives a lasting joy.
    Kim suggests trying some things that will give us lasting joy, like Mass, community, authenticity, confession, and adoration (time in silence with God).
    If you are struggling with disordered sexual desires, God is calling you to something more. He has called you to be fully alive. Do not identify yourself as your desires. Let God give you your identity.

      Seth N, More to follow. I want to think this over carefully. My fundamental problem with the woman giving her testimony is that I believe it is a minority opinion in the extreme, being the antithesis of what most LGBT Catholics experience and believe. My problem with Jackie is that she is committed to an official Church teaching that does not appear to me to admit dissent or allow for its public discussion. I am taking my time in answering the video, as I neither wish to question the validity of the speaker, Kim’s, personal experience, nor disparage Jackie’s commitment to her Church, which is my Church too, when all is said and done.

      So, god made some less sinful than others? People don’t have control over their sexual orientation. One of the “seven holy sacraments” is marriage. If I’m not attracted to the opposite sex because of the way god made me, then god made me so I can’t partake in one of the holy sacraments. How does that work?

    • @jackiehp5628
      @jackiehp5628 Před 5 lety +38

      Brian H God didn’t make us sinful. We have free will. We’re the ones that choose sin. Like Kim explains it’s the action not the attraction that is sin. I’m not allowed to partake in the sacrament “Holy Orders” because I was created a woman... does that make me less loved?? No. We are called to live out holiness with our flaws. Fr Josh said not too long ago at an event, “Being perfect doesn’t make you Holy. It’s never giving up trying to become better that makes us Holy.” I hope that helps 😊

    I am impressed with these two ladies. Making a video of a subject that really needs to be talked about. I am so glad that you left the comments section open. I have a similiar story. I was in the LGBTQ community for over 25 years. I have walked away. I now realize I was looking for God in all the wrong places. My life was stagnant, and falling apart. I said a few of my friends I think I am cursed. Started searching on youtube for professionals that could help. I found Father Ripperger, an exorcist and all his videos realizing that I was in a spiritual battle. I returned to the Church, went to Confession and made a thorough soul searching confession. I received sanctifying Grace and received Holy Communion and have taken the presence of God within me. I feel at peace. As St. Augustine stated in his book The Book of Confessions, everything sparkles when you turn your back on God and will bring you to destruction. As we are searching and searching we found outlets that lie and make everything exciting but in reality that is the devil. The devil does not show up in a red suit and a pitchfork but is cunning and sly ways and I was taken in. I am now in my church community, regularly reinforced in my faith with weekly Mass, sometimes more, saying the Holy Rosary daily, following the Ten Commandments and working daily on improving my virtues by denying and overturning the Seven Deadly Sins. When I look back on my life now in the past it was almost as if I thought I was God. God has made my life quite simple. By guving the Ten Commandments, the Seven Deadly Sins and a whole Community of Priests who have made it their life's work to become Bible Scholars. I trust these scholars whi are real Doctorates in their profession. I am no longer a OPPOSITIONAL DEFIANT TEENAGER subverting everything the Church and the US Culture stands for. God made it simple but gave us free will to either choose to follow Him or not. It wasn't until the pain in my life brought me to my knees out of despiration that I returned to my God who was waiting patiently for my return. For anyone that has gone through similiar things WELCOME HOME.

    If I'm not supposed to identify with my sexuality than how come 90% of these conversations about people with SSA are only about sex? There's so much more to being attracted to the same gender than sex. How about how it impacts friendships? Family? Feeling close to people? Discerning a vocation? Showing up in the world? Being allowed to serve the Church? What if Catholics set aside the topic of sex for one of these conversations and just talked about the struggles of day-to-day life as someone who identifies as LGBTQ?

    • @thermalreboot
      @thermalreboot Před měsícem +1

      Perhaps your problem is that you automatically connect sex with love and attach that to your identity. We're called to love our neighbor, we're not called to have sex with them. Just because you experience same sex attraction doesn't mean you have to make that your identity. I don't identify as a fornicator, I've had sex outside marriage, but I don't wave a flag and make that my identity. I've confessed it, I've given it to God and I'm not engaging in it, so why should I make it my identity? Learn to separate love from sex. And no, love is not love, the ancient Greeks had something like 7 words for love, only one was sexual.

      Step 1: Identify ONLY as what God made you: a) if you are a man: a man for a woman, b) if you are a woman: a woman for a man, or c) a religious (priest, sister, brother). Fight and win that battle (with the help of the power of God) through prayer and fasting.
      2) Do not feed any image of you that is not God's plan for you. Do not identify with anything ungodly. Do not see or watch anything ungodly.
      3) Study as deeply as necessary, through the Scriptures, in prayer and fasting, what God made of you. Listen to the "Naked Without Shame" recordings...they are excellent.
      4) Start to get to know many people of the opposite gender. Look into developing into what most people of the opposite desire from you.
      5) If you have to leave your country to find love of the opposite gender, do it. Then, get to know someone of the opposite gender...date them lovingly. Give the relationship time to gel. Be patient with them.

    That said, I found the way you spoke on this topic respectful and not necessarily negative towards the gay community in the way videos like these traditionally do. If you're gay religion isn't for you, but I don't think if you are, religion is worth denying that part of you. Because it won't last in the end. Never does.

    I feel such a pull to convert to Catholicism but the issue of same sex attraction is the thing that really puts me off. I just can’t reconcile the idea that God wouldn’t bless or approve of something that is entirely rooted in love and goodness. I’m not talking about promiscuous sex, I’m talking about a true bond between two people committed to spend their lives together. How is love sin? It doesn’t make sense to me. I love God, love Jesus, find comfort in Mother Mary....I just can’t understand how God can’t accept love.

    • @arinrumi
      @arinrumi Před 2 lety +4

      I think the problem is the confusion between love and sex. Don't forget that love isn't just sexual or romantic. Love for one's country for exemple. Sex and love are different thing and sex should never, must never concidered proof of love. There's many people out there have sex without love, so calling sex as proof of love is just beyond wrong.
      If there's one thing I agree with our LGBT friends is that "love is love" they're right I'll give them that. But what is love exactly? Love is from and for everyone. Even the teachers back at school who constantly scold us for everything.
      But once again, sex is not love. Is not a proof of love, it must never considered as one.
      People often associate love with only three think (I think) acceptence, kindness and sometimes sex. What they often forget is that love is not just that, love is dicipline. And it is strict. Schools have rules and there's reasons for those rules, so that the student behave. Because the teachers love the student. Parents yell at their kids when they misbehave, if my mom never yelled at me who knows where I'll be right now.
      To me personally this is what love is.

    I believe in God, I love God. And i have to say it does hurt when I know I'll have to spend my future alone. Instead of sharing it and living one with (God in it) and someone to help me through it, why I would want to? Well...who wants to live life alone? Its torn me up, its lowered my self-esteem and its changed me as a person, as a *kid* knowing I've always been different. I know God is God...you cant change the way he is and his image. I can pull up scriptures and try my best to defend myself, and show how "booksmart" I am, but that's not really gonna get anyone anywhere. But I'm at a terrible moment in my life of confusion. I *truly* dont believe sharing a life with love of with someone who you truly love, is wrong? Am I wrong for that? Real question!
    Infact feeling this way has pulled me so close to God. I'm only 16. I also think Kim's ways were different.. it interprets "same sexual behavior" ....I guess ...more as lust? She dated women while being married to a man, multiple. It kinda seems like a different situation....
    Nevertheless this has shaped me into the person I am today, yeah i do believe God is still at work... and not trying to look like a victim or giving myself "self pitty" but compared to other crosses I truly think this is different...I hope we can all come to terms one day that this isnt your average sin or well even a sin, lust is.....and hopefully I can be with someone who I love, truly. Because that's also what we were made for love. "it is not good that man should be alone".... but that's just me, maybe what I believe is just wrong, I would love for someone else's thoughts on this....but all I ask is for help, and prayers. Because it's very stressful, its affected me my whole life, and right when I come to happy, or atleast in "not so negative terms". It doesn't stay long. Because I'm reminded that living atleast a somewhat normal life with someone and with God ofcourse will always just be a fantasy.

      Name
      One thing you need to know is that the devil is going to lie and make you feel alone, and he’s going to make you feel like you’ll never be happy because (as he’ll say) “you can never have love”. The truth is, you’re not alone. And you’re not going to be. Real love, fulfillment, peace, and joy aren’t limited to only people who are in romantic relationships. There’s connection, authenticity, and acceptance to be found within deep friendships - everyone needs that.
      Many people go single their whole lives, as priests or nuns or just someone who never gets married. But they’re not alone, or lacking real love or fulfillment. That’s what God calls them to, in order for them to live the best way for them personally to come to Him.
      God knows you personally and He has a call for you personally. No one’s holiness looks the same. So trust His plan. Trust that He loves you and will take care of you. He will fulfill you. He won’t leave you alone and unloved. He wants you to be a saint so badly, that He gave you a difficult (but joy-filled) cross! He wants you with Him so badly. This is the path for you to get there, not the road block that will keep you away. He’ll provide all the love, support, fulfillment, and clarity you need throughout your whole life, if you’ll take His hand and just trust that He loves you and knows what He’s doing.
      I hope that helps a little bit. Believe in His love and surround yourself with people who will show that Christlike love to you as well.

      @catalinacabello1460 Před 3 lety +5

      We do not “choose” to be straight because it should not be a decision in the first place. God created man and woman to be partners and fulfill HOLY matrimony. The Bible isn’t a book of fairytales. You cannot be living a blessed life as a homosexual. Now if you are an individual who has no place in his heart for the Lord or no education on His teachings then I suggest you educate yourself before feeling so righteous about this question that is supposed to stump us conservatives.
      Not to mention that many of us who do not condone homosexuality hate homosexuals. There are many reasons that people choose that life. However, it is a fight for souls. A fight for eternal life. Many times it is out of love for these people that we fight so hard to help them understand that this life and these worldly desires are not what matter. I have family members who choose to be homosexual and although they are wonderful beings it’s their soul I am worried about. Not their life on earth. If you have no sense of after life and how to live for that then it will always be hard to get through to you

    I really want to share this video, but I've already failed many times to be charitable in the way I presented similar content on my social media. I'm honestly considering avoiding future family gatherings because of how much hurt I've caused specific family members who live out this lifestyle because of how little I considered their feelings when posting things on my social media. A good handful of my relatives retaliated in their defense as well. I don't even know how to begin to apologize and explain that I still accept and love them even though I disagree with how they're living. Please pray for me.

      Don't absent yourself from your family. (Being religious is not a cult.) You can still love people who are using birth control, divorced, same-sex civilly married, etc., because your presence is love. Be loving in your interactions. "Preach always; when necessary, use words." With family, I never use words because they already know where I stand and we still love each other. Yes, we are the Church, but in America everyone has freedom of religion for themselves.

    • @laXrockera691
      @laXrockera691 Před 5 lety +3

      @@splashpont I totally agree and to an extent even went out of my way to demonstrate that I love them with my actions and asking about their lives. This only became an issue when I posted something on my personal Facebook account regarding same sex relationships that it became a problem. My family saw it as a deliberate and personal attack against them.

    • @reikae__
      @reikae__ Před 4 lety +9

      @@laXrockera691 I don't think that's the issue. Coming from someone who has come out to their mother and didn't feel accepted: the actual problem probably lies not in the fact that you shared whatever on your social media, but rather in the way you "express your acceptance". Yes, I understand that you are struggling to be understood, but still saying that you do not agree with the way someone lives is counterproductive and can make the other feel not accepted at all. At the end of the day is no one's business to agree or disagree with other people's "life choices" (even tho being LGBT or cisgender/heterosexual/"normal" is not a choice but just who you are).
      My mom answered my "hey mom I think I'm not straight" saying "you still have time to change". That's not acceptance.
      It would be sad if you and your family just drifted away because of this, so my advice is to LISTEN and ask for simple explanations to them first of all, inform yourself on the issue and absolutely keep your mind open. Don't just go for content that enforces your opinion but rather for that which challenges your beliefs.
      I truly hope you will change your mind a bit and will manage to get some closure with your family! Good luck!

      Not unless you eat it a regular amount, and I guess moderately exercise too. You could probably do that for the rest of your life and literally be fine, developing little if any health problems. Yeah this argument is a little weird. Sex isn’t everything but neither are chocolate chip cookies, or any number of other pleasures pursued in moderation. The framing of her not pursing sex around the reason that ‘sex isn’t the only thing that makes people happy/sexual pleasure is fleeting’ is strange since there are so many other things which if you were to apply that same prescription would seem a bit absurd.

    Oh my goodness! Amen sister, and where has Christ been keeping you! I know you said you are married, but what a truly beautiful reformed soul, and related witness, you have! Keep up the God-work and know how truly thankful you made me today for knowing there is someone like you out there in Christ's family!
    My initial mountain to move with Jesus wasn't same-sex attraction or action, but rather substance abuse and all that came along with it, and once He finally caught up with me by shutting down all of my excuses, He pulled me out of the muck I chose to live in a made me a new creature again. What's really encouraging about that, and you, though is that we both come across very similarly in the way we express our witness for Christ. Truth and love with genuine/authentic passion!
    In Christ, Andrew
    P.S. A little tip for the remaining and/or upcoming struggles to be revealed (and healed - I like that) is to literally beg Him to remove any and all emotional memories and attachments that relate to fueling the sin in question. That allows Him to break the chains so we can participate with doing the healing work needed with Him. Then whatever it is becomes a page in our history book instead or a movie or a mockumentory for the guy downstairs to torment us with. Jesus is the Man!!!

Whatever you're battling brother, know that the victory has already been won for you and is yours for the asking with Christ! Viva Cristore!!!! In Christ, Andrew
      Also, don't hide of run from the pain that often comes from winning the battle. It's the old man of sin not wanting to let go and die but once we embrace and face the emotional ties to sin hE uses to keep us from killing them with Christ, then we have to offer them in surrender to the Lord so we can be resurrected with Him anew after they die. Or, incorporating the words of out sister from the video, the emotional memories and attachments must be revealed (and offered up) so Christ can heal them once and for all. You'll still be tempted afterwards though, but God allows that to strengthen and reinforce that faith and trust you have further developed with Him.

Pleasure is a natural good when undistorted by original sin. Likewise then why can't committed, homosexual lovers - clothed in Christ - acknowledging that Christ alone can fulfil us fully, also partake of that same goodness ?

    Hi Kim
    You've given great advice to our sisters & brothers who face struggles with this.
    I'm just sad to hear you dont like Cats as they too are the most loving companions & are not cold & detached as so many people believe. I had a dog when i was in my teens into mid 20's when he died, then few years later a poor hungry Mama Cat came looking for food she would sit & wait & we would feed her provided her with a cosy big kennel & she would go away for few weeks & return with her pride & joy 2 or 3 kittens.
    Each year she did this we tried to get her neutered but she avoided the humane trap so we were left with kittens who became our next generations of cats, some hissy scared little ones, some tamer & more handleable. There were homes in country for the wilder ones but the tame babies from each litter became our family, they were loved cherished & they loved us back.
    Because we opened our hearts to them they trusted us, even the scared Mama cat knew she could depend on us to feed & provide shelter for her & her little ones. My elderly Mother was never alone in her room because two beautiful furry Cats kept her company, they knew she needed quiet reassurance from their purring & presence. One greeted her after she returned from broken femur surgery with such loud purrs it was like a "traction engine" of happiness & she rubbed her head into my Mother's forehead with a joyful greeting.
    Theres a saying thay once a Cat starts to trust you they move forward in leaps & bounds in their trust, ive experienced this many times even very feral ones have become big softies loving head butts & rubs. So next time you see one try to see Jesus in them too because He's in Every living Creature, even Cats 🐱🤗
    Theres a wonderful Catholic website "Catholic Stewards of Creation" they have prayer groups that support all Animals in the world, our domestic pets, mistreated neglected abused animals, wild animals in circuses bring abused & countries that have no animal welfare policies anything we want prayers for they will include in their intentions.
    If anyone has a sick pet they will pray for them.
    Also one of the group Susi Pittman has written books about "Do Our Pets Go to Heaven"..
    So if you get chance to spend time with a friends Cat take this chance & just relax & watch how they cautiously but lovingly work their way into your heart. God's Creatures come in many packages. I love the hymn..
    "All things bright & beautiful All Creatures Great & Small, All things wise & wonderful The Lord God made them All".
    💙🐱🙏🏻🐶❤
