  • While not entirely bad, Gungrave Overdose ended up being one of the most disappointing games I've played this year and is a massive step down from the original

    From your descriptions, it sounds to me like the game might have originally intended for you to use all three characters in a single playthrough, and designed the levels accordingly. But then they changed it to how it is now (possibly to make the game technically three times longer), and never went and rebalanced the levels to work for every character.

    This rant about stop playing or caring about games that don't interest you is amazing. I am a massive game collector and some games are said to be good, but don't engage me, or I don't like the game play loop or genre. Playing something through just because you started it doesn't make sense anymore if you don't like it. Snatcher is one of the greatest visual novels ever, but when I got the emulator working I didn't enjoy it. $1000 for a copy I didn't spend is not enough for me to continue. Honestly one of the best decisions you ever made Cvit. It made my gaming experience 10x better.

      Lollipop Chainsaw was the game that made me adopt this mentality, and I've felt so much better since. I saw it jumping up in price on the PS3 and thought there must be something to it, so I imported the Japanese version for a third of the price and it just wasn't for me, but I held myself back because for a month I thought I was going to beat it. For that month I barely played new games because I didn't want to lose my focus and barely played that because it was bad

I tried going through this game recently with the help of some friends (I had previously dropped off right after finishing the casino level since it didn't come close to measuring up with the original) and kept muttering/screaming to myself "How is this level WORSE" with each subsequent encounter afterwards. It simply never ends. The Gamefaq I was reading from for control help described this game as *playable* so I thought I was going insane with how bad the hitstun was, so it's great to see some haterism actually breaking down all of what makes the game just not work.

    So that discount Bayonetta fight against Sherry is actually kind of odd in a narrative perspective. Sherry was actually the wife of Harry McDowall, and daughter of Bear Walken from the first game, and the only way you'd know this is if you watch the anime, which is the only other time she appears. The anime isn't even canon, as certain elements are drastically different. It's infinitely better than this game though, and I recommend it.

    This was one of the first games i got for my PS2 at the time, and it was entirely in Japanese, so to me it did feel like and old OVA except i had no hope of ever understanding it. This did make me avoid the story as well as not really caring for the tutorial, and i'm laughing my ass off that the sword guys are supposed to be fought in close range. I do not remember having a problem with the camera at all, as well as the shield regeneration working fine and somewhat quickly, but the boss fight with the two bulldozers was absurd and shaped how i would play the rest of the game as well, by spamming the supers. So i remember this more as a meter management game kind of, since there wasn't much tech regarding which buttons to press, just loading up specials to get shield in hairy situations and sometimes blocking a barrage of fire(like in the SpiderRobot fight), to then load up on specials.
    I also remember unlocking both other characters as soon as they appeared in the story, and thinking they were way easier so i would be "cheating" by using them lol
    The game was way too long, yeah, and while you didnt have much positive to say about this that you didn't say about the first one, i'm glad to see another piece of my childhood on this channel, great video.

    One thing to remember about game reception back during the 6th gen was the idea of more game length = objectively better, despite by now many have figured out how that's not a definitive fact. Gungrve VR was also kinda bad, though the thing that kills it is the slow 20 degree stepped turning makes it impossible to play. If the turning were analog and smooth it would be a fun game. Unlike most VR games it uses a gamepad and is otherwise just Gungrave (the game is still third person) with aiming controlled by the HMD and in a 3D environment. The frustrating thing is they *almost* had it but one bad design decision with the controls ruins it.

Of course it's hard as tits to actually do it reliably since your lock on is more shortsighted than my grandma (seriously why is it like that) but if you get in a good position you can dish out loads of bullets very quickly while avoiding most damage you'd otherwise take if you were trying to do the guns barrage (which is sadly near useless in this game)

    I liked the faster mobility and the new moves but the rest of the game was a mess. The shield nerfs was too heavy, the constant knockdowns and horrible camera made this game a mess. You can see that the story was clearly at least a 13 episodes anime but their budget was so limited that they couldn't animate anything. Yuji experience in this game is why people said "never bring a sword into a gun fight" his slashes should have been his main shots and should not be cancelled when you move or dodge.

    this game is a lot better if you get stuck on the spider tanks and start over on easy mode, also the other characters are playable after the first mission (not the tutorial) but you need to start over to play them.

    I bought Gungrave with my PS2 back in the day. Me and my brother played the hell out of it and honestly...there wasn't much to it. It's literally mash square till you win, it was like Devil May Cry without melee weapons. I'm amazed they managed to make a game even worse

    Here's a question: Why was an animation stupid in charge of game development? That is like asking a company that specializes in geology to build 5 sport cars without telling them anything about constructing automobiles or engineering.

    • @SianaGearz
      @SianaGearz Před 8 měsíci +3

      The wikipedia quote "developed by animation studio Ikusabune" is actually plain incorrect. It was developed, designed, directed and programmed by almost all the SAME people who worked on the original Gungrave, working for or contracting on behalf of Red Entertainment.

    I recently bought Gungrave G.O.R.E. and I am having alot of fun with it. I wanted to look back at the rest of the series but based on this review I should only look at the original.
    I'm excited to hear you cover Gungrave G.O.R.E. . It's not a perfect game but it seems like it fixed alot of things you mentioned as issues. One piece of advice is to not play it on Hard the first time like I did as it throws so many enemies that it's common to be overhelmed by them. Unless you have routed every stage perfectly for an S-Ranked every or grind early stages for enough upgrade points to level make you capable of dealing more DPS so the enemies don't pile up wave after wave.

  • @DonChalant
    @DonChalant Před rokem +4

    I'll be real normally I like most of your reviews but this one comes off as you barely trying to learn the game or you just being flat out bad at it. A lot of your problems were just stuff I didn't run into. Day of the dead and its upgrades make a lot of the game's problems quite easy to deal with, like the helicopter for example.
